    I'm kind of a weirdo on French Horn. I have trouble with the high register, even sometimes with just the C. But, I for some reason am able to get right down on the low range to the point where its close to a tuba's range. The problem is this isn't useful for me cuz everything on the French Horn is in the higher range.
    Edit: I should also note that I only started playing French Horn in April of 2020. Before that I was on alto sax for a few months, then on March break, taught myself trumpet to bridge the gap between the two instruments. I've also been playing piano since I was 6 (9 years)

      That's not weird I guess. I have been learning the horn for about 10 years and like the low registers. It's quite easy to hit some low notes on the horn. Hitting high one's takes some time as you have to develop some muscles and have to make the air flow fast. Though to master the low registers is also not easy, I guess xD

      Most common note range (in my few years of playing) range from C below the staff to an upper range of A above the staff. I recently have been playing music a much lower range though.

      It is actually good that you’ve have a good low range. People think French horns are more prone to the trumpet and the high brass section. However French horns can be in any type of sound due to its wide range. As a French horn player myself I usually played pieces that are in the bass area, and pieces in the soprano area. We are not in the high voice nor the low voice thats why composers loved to play with our range, so if you are going to be majoring on French horn, I suggest you should continue expanding your low and high range.

      For me I’m the opposite I can hit stupidly high and I struggle with low notes. I did get my first good pedal C though so that’s good.

    So I guess in general these notes are best avoided or at least approached from above (i.e., descending into them). I suspect they would have more stability intonation-wise from something which specializes in low notes, like a tuba or bass trombone.

      Well it really depends on how comfortable on the area you are playing, if your more prone to high notes your not going to do a good job on the low notes. You need to treat the low notes as if you treat the high notes. But the one thing I can tell is you need to lower your jaw more and withdraw air. That’s the only key you need to reach the notes.

    • @FuckTrumpFuckYouIfYouVoted4Him
      @FuckTrumpFuckYouIfYouVoted4Him 2 роки тому

      Lower the jaw and slide the center portion of your mouthpiece more on your bottom lip. Tip...lower lip is for low notes upper lip is for high notes. Neither series of notes will come out using half and half both sets of lips lol it has to be something like 65-70% of you upper lip in the cup for high notes and 65-70% of your lower lip in the cup for low notes. The issue is the horn has a range of 6 octaves so low notes and high notes are defined by your capabilities.

    I just bought a parforcehorn mouthpiece with a "French" horn shank that's almost 25.00 mm cup diameter. I bought it mainly to demonstrate the lowest of the low range, including pedals, for kids. I may use it to do some multitrack fun stuff. I can't hit the pedals with a regular mouthpiece!

    I always had trouble with the notes below the staff ngl, I was more in the middle where most of the noes were. the last time I played the French horn in middle school, which was in 2015, I was able to reach outside of the French horn scale for high notes
    My teacher had us French horn players in a practice session and asked us to play the highest notes that we were able to play/ reach to and I was able to get outside of the French horn scale

    Thanks Robb.. I want to ask one question: What are the pedal tones (sounding pitches) in Bb and F divisions on double horn?

    • @FuckTrumpFuckYouIfYouVoted4Him
      @FuckTrumpFuckYouIfYouVoted4Him 2 роки тому +1

      Notes on any French Horn, Marching French Horn, Mellophone or Marching Mellophone in the key of Bb is still written in the key of F, it has to be read and transposed in the key of F for the sake of simplicity. Any of these instruments keyed in Bb will play a low concert pitch Bb as their lowest natural intonation/lowest playable note with all valves open which is written as a low F. That is why they are keyed in Bb. If they are keyed in F, the lowest natural intonation would be a low F written as a low C for the French Horn, hence the most popular name "French Horn in F". And btw that low C on the F side is the exact same pitch as a low F on a Contrabass Tuba. That's the second F below the bass clef staff. That's a very lowwwwwwww note. For comparison the lowest note on a standard BBb Contrabass Tuba with 3 valves is a low E natural which is basically a semitone (half note) lower than that F. The French Horn can go as low as a Contrabass and as high as a Soprano.

    • @bryanivyfilms
      @bryanivyfilms 3 роки тому +2

      Well, with brass instruments, the lowest note is tricky.
      There is a fundamental note that each brass instrument has. Euphonium has pedal Bb for example. Then, with all valves pressed down, you descend from that fundamental note into the lowest possible note, or move the slide and trigger all the way with trombone. That is lowest possible note.
      There is an advanced technique where you can artificially create ever LOWER notes with your mouth flapping around in a certain way, but no one actually recognizes those as real notes as they kind of go outside the umbrella of what is considered a note, in terms of musicality as well as physics. This technique basically makes you instrument a glorified kazoo.

    • @FuckTrumpFuckYouIfYouVoted4Him

      The lowest ACTUAL note is written as a low C. That low C is a low F in concert pictch or the second F below the staff in bass clef. In other words it's basically the lowest note on a 3 valve Contrabass Tuba pitched in BBb. The Tuba can go to a low E natural but who cares, it's safe to say the Horn can go as low as a Tuba.

      @@chielvooijs2689 No.....all FHorns (Cntr-Alt, Tnr, Alt) can descend one full octave lower than their fundamental pitch. Since the Contra-Alto FHorn in FF(bass) has a fundamental pitch of F1, it's lowest playable note is F0. That's not a pedal tone. It's an actual note that can be played in full voice in a scale. There's a rumor there are some notes in that scale that don't exist. You have to create them to play them.
