SF Assault is a great game. With branching paths, it would've improved its replay value and therefore easily surpassed SF64. A lack of quality and poor gameplay didn't cause SF Assault disappointing sales. What screwed over SF Assault and the franchise as a whole was SF's failure to move on from its past as an on-rails shooter and reinvent itself.
Fans: "Man, SF SNES and SF64 were so AMAZING! Probably the greatest on-rails shooters ever!". Nintendo: "Hey, SF is NOT an on-rails shooter series. That's a dead genre, guys." Fans: "Oookay. If SF isn't an on-rails shooter, then what is Star Fox?" Nintendo: "....uh. Hmm, good question." That was the kiss of death for this series.
unironically the best star fox game anyone can fight me
It's very clear Nintendo should have let namco cook.
