What an excellent video, Ben! I had tinnitus for several months now, and I've been dealing with anxiety and depression with it to the extent that it's making me physically sick. I've just started using sound therapy, so I'm hopeful that it will help. I'm also going to start CBT as well. I walk for 30 min. in the morning, and 30 min. in the evening. The outdoor sounds while I'm walking do mask the tinnitus, which I enjoy. I think the toughest part for me was accepting the fact that I may have this for the rest of my life. At 62 years old, I've had good use of my ears, so far. Never had any issues, so I can't complain. It is nice to see there are treatments and support groups out there that can help. Take care of your ears, people!

This is so educational thanks for making this. I want to support people who has Timnitis. Some things I want to share about my ears is I am sensitive to noises, my ears hurting from headphones and earbuds so they need to be comfortable. Recently I had a doctors appointment and the person pointed out looks like I had an ear infection when it’s the cotton swabs, which I told my mom to stop using cotton swabs, so what I did differently is clean the outside of my ears in the shower, and dry them.
I have stress and trauma triggers too as well. I have medical conditions including diabetes, insulin resistance, PCOS, and asthma, and sleep conditions I have insomnia and obstructive sleep apnea, so the reason why is my medical conditions. I have mosaic Down syndrome and I think as if they’re connected to my medical conditions, and sleep conditions. I still struggle with noises and my ears feeling uncomfortable or they hurt. The positives is that I am already taking control of my health and overall well being.

I'm wondering how much the increase of noise frequencies in our environments effect this; wifi, smart meters , cell towers etc. This just started for me over the past year and initially questioned if I was imagining it. Then wondered if I had a water leak in the house. Then started wondering if it could be the smart meter but so far I'm the only one that hears it. It will keep me awake or wake me out of a sound sleep.

When I was younger and expressed that I'm always hearing ringing my parents and other adults would just flat out tell me I was lying so I learnt to deal with it just always having something like music in the back ground. I learned about tinnitus about a year ago I believe? I found that learning to play a musical instrument has helped me a lot. Not only the sound of the instrument diminishing the volume of tinnitus but also training my attention on learning and playing the guitar keeps my mind occupied with a positive focal point. Someone recently gave me an old keyboard and I find the same principles apply when trying to figure out the chords and keyboard techniques. No teachers, just hands on and mental attention and an occasional pointer from UA-cam. Good luck to all finding a fun way to alleviate the condition. It's very satisfying to be able to play a couple of nice songs on the guitar

I've suffered with Tinitus for about 8 years now..i find getting outside and keeping occupied takes your focus away from the tinitus. Mine started on my left side and has become gradually louder where i struggled coping at the time. Not realising that my frustration and stress was causing the noise to be more apparent and louder. It started off as a subtle ringing but gradually gets louder and it is really loud now when i have no distraction or stress. It started on my right side a few years ago and that is creeping up in frequency. It has been worrying at times as to whether it'll get to a point where i cant cope as it gets louder. I cant read books as the noise distracts my concentration. Sometimes i struggle listening to the tv with the high pitch noise. Sometimes its pulsatile and sometimes its just a constant ring. I use breathing and meditation to relax. I also listen to music with headphones. I sometimes wonder what it would be like to be tinitus free for a day and how relaxing that would be. I find distraction techniques and daily activities mask the noise. Acceptance is another way of coping...this allows me to calm my negative thoughts. Accept the noise isnt going away. Negativity and the flight response tend to just turn the volumn up. Be mindful of your tinitus and learn how to manage the frequency with calming techniques. Meditation is great..i focus on my breathing as though im sending my breaths to my feet slowly making their way up my body, before i know it im asleep by the time my breaths have reached my hips. I hope explaining about my experience may help others in dealing with theirs...

I had eaten an ice cream earlier and decided to google foods that can trigger spikes. I found that a diet high in sodium can increase flare ups, ice cream being high on the list. I will have to suffer on the odd occasion as i cannot totally give up on ice cream. I will certainly be keeping a track on certain foods or drinks to avoid or limit from now on.

I have a very complicated case I’d like advise with if possible mine is a constant whoosing but I can feel the artery or blood vessels vibrating and it’s audible to others.. it’s come with extreme pain to had audiology tests all normal MRI just states abnormalities on the right, if I touch the side of my head it gets louder more painful. Had this now for over 10 months. Right side of face goes numb blurry right eye yet every consultant I see says it’s just tinnitus but it’s not it stops me sleeping I’ve practically bee bedridden with it the whole time due to the pain with no pain releif. It’s got to the point of suicidal ideation which is awful. I’ve spoken to many with tinnitus and they say theirs doesn’t come with all these problems. There is no neuroma showing yet feels like a main artery is pushing against my right inner ear like a mobile phone vibrating against it 24/7 I can’t seem to mask it it’s a very low tone. I’ve tried the tinnitus play app doesn’t work many white noise machine noises not really helping. I just can’t cope with it anymore and can’t seem to get any kind of help 😞 any advice would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks and happy holidays 🎄 to you and yours Chris from the UK 🇬🇧

  • @Monipenny1000

Tinnitus is a life long issue I've had. Seems I've learned to deal with it somewhat though still frustrating. Mine was caused from childhood recurrant ear infections very likely from having disfunctional eustachian tubes that was only diagnosed by an ENT 1 1/2 years ago. Having lost complete hearing in my right ear led me to that doctor appointment. But just prior to that, I realized the cause of my problem was allergies to my pets, currently 2 dogs and a cat. Them sleeping in my bedroom was really a problem unbeknownst to me for many years, I've always had pets, even in childhood. I noticed at night it was much worse, I would become nasally congested and start coughing from drainage, yet still very congested. Once it dawned on me that my pets might be the cause, I went out and bought the animal pro dyson vacuum, a hepa air filter for my bedroom and eventually had to kick my pets out of our bedroom. This has helped a lot, especially at night. My days not so much since I still have these pets.
Until now, listening to this video, I had not made the connection of tinnitus and anxieties. I've relatively managed my anxieties for the most part but my triggers are the news, action movies and my husband at certian times when he talks to me a certain way. This is why I don't watch tv. It makes a lot of sense. My ears rarely ever stop ringing and when it does, I notice it and bam, they start ringing again.
A few months ago my brother who apparently had never suffered with tinnitus until he had his first ear infection. The way he was talking, I thought he was going to lose his mind. To me, I'm like, join the club, it's not as bad as you're making it out to be. No, I didn't tell him that, it was my thoughts. I was sort of surprised but not really that he was having such weird reaction about it as if his World was going to end. You have to understand that he is not a mentally or emotionally strong/stable person.....at all. So now I understand why he was having such a terrible time with his very temporary tinnitus experience.

I have acute, chronic tinnitus which has worsened significantly over a 12 year period. Its now so bad its worsening on a daily basis, I've tried all of the recommended treatments but nothing has worked, I'm now in total despair and fear the worst. I've listened to this and countless other videos, all spouting the same old tired suggestions. When you've tried all of these and it just continues to worsen, seems pointless. My tinnitus worsens during the night, wakes me up when I'm asleep, how do you combat that? Good luck to everyone with Tinnitus, when it becomes chronic, you lose all hope!!

A thought... if you can match the frequency of the tinnitus with a sound device. Maybe if you can adjust the phase of audio device in relation to the tinnitus, you should be able to totally cancel it out in theory. But considering the tinnitus probably has some variations total cancellation may not be possible.
But still should get a significant drop.
My tinnitus has come back after many years. Stress I just had a posterior vitreous detachment which scared me and did cause massive increase in blood pressure at the time.

Hi. With regards to the last point, the fight or flight thing, I have made a conscious effort to avoid negativity on the whole in my life and I do suffer from general anxiety. But one of my passions if video games. My question, if anyone can answer is should I give up violent video games? Its my only hobby. The only thing I get any enjoyment from or look forward to in life so it would be a big deal to give it up. But I have noticed the tinnitus is most noticable some of the time while playing. I attributed it to wearing headphones but it occurs to me it might be making me more anxious. Most of the time I find the fighting, danger ect fun and immersive but there are some times I can get a bit worked up if I'm stuck on a difficult part and I'm getting killed a lot lol.
So does that sound bad to you?
Thank you so much for all your helpful advice. I've only just discovered your channel and I've already learned some valuable tips that I've implemented into my treatment.

If I had tinnitus before it was probably mild enough for me to ignore it but recently the ringing in my right ear has gotten louder to the point where I can't ignore it, I have a muscle knot at the bottom of my neck for a while now that's mostly caused my arm to hurt as well as a few lumps on the side of my neck that's been there my whole life, but I'm pretty sure the reason for my tinnitus is the fact that I've been listening to loud music with headphones over the years. I just want to reduce the ringing in my right ear and honestly even though I'm in my early 20s and it's going to be embarrassing I might get hearing aids.... if I can afford them
