From a brit, how many times to they have to go round before they start racing?

Great question!
One reason they continue to go around before green flag is for safety. Once all safety marshall’s and track workers confirm over radio the track is safe and ready for racing, it can start. Some things that might keep the track from being safe cannot be heard or seen in the audience.
Another reason they may go around again is how P1 controls the start of the race. If P2 jumps, they will have to go around again. They have to make sure the field is bunched up and close to each other for a fair start.
