    I worked with Dave Mason in NY back in 2010 or 2011. He is a cool guy. After a long show, he went out to the front of the house. Sat in a chair and signed autographs for anyone who wanted one. He signed an album for me afterwards and hung out with the crew for a while. Really liked him.

      Very cool! I've heard he's a good guy. Nice to hear it from someone who knows first-hand! Thanks, Willy!

    Just saw Charles Lloyd at Knoxville TN 'Big Ears' Festival last week. He's still active at 86 and has a new double album out on Blue Note. The WAVES album (A&M SP 3044) was reissued on CD in 1988. The 1973 A&M follow up, GEETA (SP 3046) has not been reissued. I recommend this one, which features a medley of Rolling Stones covers and "Berries," the memorable last track. Mr. Lloyd hung out among the fans after his set. He signed some album sleeves for us and took photos. Your video was most informative. Thanks!

      Thanks SO much, James, for the update on Charles Lloyd! It's great to know he's still recording and performing (and taking the time to hang out with fans after his set!) Thanks for the recommendation on "GEETA." I've made a note of it. (There are some used record shows coming up in my area and I'm planning to hit the record stores in L.A. at the end of the month. I will be keeping an eye out for a copy!) I really appreciate the feedback, James! Thanks again!

    There’s a 2014 interview with Charles Lloyd in the Mercury News where he discusses the origin of his relationship with The Beach Boys:
    Q Tell me more about Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys.
    A They took me on the road with them. They underwrote me for several years, because it was during the time when I wasn’t traveling. But I would go out on the road with them - and Brian, who’s deaf in one ear, but has a quasi- Beethoven thing going on where he can hear around a corner. And he can write some beautiful songs. I was shocked that they had some changes in them and beautiful harmonies. I had to take them to the woodshed.
    Q You’re still playing them: “Caroline, No,” “God Only Knows.”
    A There are others, too.
    Q Let’s go back to the chronology.
    A Well, the plantation system just didn’t work for me any more. Atlantic Records had blackballed me. They weren’t willing to deal with me on the level. So Mike Love came around and said, “What do you need?” The Beach Boys had this big estate in Bel Air […] There’s a huge studio downstairs, and Mike Love said, “Well, fine, you can use the studio any time you want.” So I’d be down there in the studio. And they’d invite me to play on some of their songs. I played on “Surf’s Up” and some of the other tunes. And sometimes Brian would come down and sing harmony. Brian Wilson is a very special guy. That guy’s a visionary. And in the studio, he’s amazing. So another door opened for me. I was blackballed, but I was free. I just kept learning from all this stuff. I remember the Beach Boys would have these rehearsals and - it sounds terrible! And then they’d get up on stage, and it’d be angelic. So I said to my roadie one day, “Man, how does this work?” He said, “Charles, this thing is a force of nature.”

      Wow! Thanks for that, Bea! Very interesting stuff and a slightly different take from Charles Lloyd on his late 60s "retreat" from the music scene than I've seen elsewhere, plus some really interesting perspective and insight into The Beach Boys. I really appreciate your time and effort to pass this along! Much appreciated, Bea!

    I bought Warm Waters in '72 and wore the album out! Especially Rusty Toy. Dave Mason smokes on that song. Still love Charles Lloyd and the Beach Boys. I remember Jazz critics killed this album. Who cares? I love this album and hadnt heard it in 55 years! You did a great revue Yo! And thanks for this!

      "Strange" is a good term for those Celebration albums! I talked about them in episodes 159 and 160. The last couple issues of the Endless Summer Quarterly profiled them, too, and finally answered a lot of questions I had about them. Thanks for the feedback, James and I agree about Gabor Szabo's playing on "Waves."

    I got the "Waves" CD from the cutout bin. Never heard of Lloyd before but I knew he had a connection with The Beach Boys. I figure I would buy it hoping The Beach Boy were on it. There they are on the first song.
    This CD lead me to other Lloyd CD's. Now I'm a big fan of his.

    Great research here Steve, i must confess to knowing nothing of Charles Lloyd but i do remember reading an article about Carl and he was talking about the making of Feel Flows and how he felt there was something missing when mixing the track adding that " Charles Lloyd stopped by and added some flute " and this ended up on the final mix which as we know, is essential to the track.
    A great post Steve , Thanks.

    Nice job, Steve! Another little almost-forgotten corner of the Beach Boys story. I can see how these LPs ride the same vibe as Feel Flows and Beaks Of Eagles. Mike Love's recitations just scream "Hello! This album was made in 1971!". Some pretty nice 12-string work from Dave Mason too. I'll have to track these records down, they are definitely "of their era."
    Well well. Highway To Hell, Abbey Road, Crossroads, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, 2400 S. Fulton Avenue, Mermaid Avenue, Street Legal, His Band And The Street Choir, Toulouse Street, Taking It To The Streets, Exile On Sesame Street, and two I can't see.

    • @thebeachboysbasementwithst6444
      @thebeachboysbasementwithst6444  3 роки тому

      "Of their era" is certainly an apt description! (You're right about Dave Mason's 12-string too! Beautiful!)
      Great work on the roads, avenues, streets theme! Sorry that I can't always find a camera angle to give you a fair shot at getting all of them. Annoyingly for me, I can't remember what the other two were (and can't see enough of them in the video to jog my memory either!) Sorry about that! I'm sure it'll come to me eventually. I'll post a follow-up comment when my brain de-fogs!

      To tell the truth, I've seen the album around for years and never really checked it out. I know there was a lot of talent in that band besides Jim Morrison, so it figures the post-Morrison work out be good! Thanks for the tip, Mike, and I'll give it a listen!

      @@thebeachboysbasementwithst6444 One thing to consider ahead of time, though is that the music is very, very different from the sort of stuff they did with Morrison. Also, the singing is pretty bad.. However, each member shines musically, and all the intriguing idiosyncrasies of each player is on full display. That's what I like about the 2 post-Morrison albums by The Doors.

      @@thebeachboysbasementwithst6444 You're right, there was a lot of talent besides Jim. I was more of a Doors fan back then, compared to now. Piano Bird was one of the better songs, IIRC. But I actually preferred the earlier non-Jim album, "Other Voices." I saw that album's material being performed by the group in concert.

    Wow Steve, I heard that TM song one time on some sort of Beach Boys radio show but never knew where to find it until now, even though I knew that it had something to do with Charles Lloyd and had forgotten about it until now! Thanks for jogging my memory. I was able to find it on Qobuz today. Interesting song until someone attempted some amateurish sounding guitar licks at the end and ruined it for me. Who was that?

    • @thebeachboysbasementwithst6444
      @thebeachboysbasementwithst6444  3 роки тому +1

      I hadn't really noted those guitar licks at the end before. (Now I'll never be able to un-hear them!) Gabor Szabo and Roger McGuinn are both playing guitar on the track, with McGuinn being noted as being on twelve-string. The way it's played, I can't tell if that's a twelve string or not. I could see them coming from Szabo as a sort of "jazz improvisation" or from McGuinn along the lines of some of the more dissonant sections on "Notorious Byrd Brothers." Not sure who gets the credit, or blame, on that. Is anyone else here able to tell? Thanks for the comments and observations, Michael!

    First off, I'm not a TM devotee. I listened to the "TM" track you mentioned & found the refrain tiresome, BUT maybe if I meditated it would become less irritating? I still think nothing tops "All This Is That" for any song having anything to do with TM. (And I'd include anything G. Harrison did in that statement -- either w/ the moptops OR solo.) In fact, it's really one of the best BB songs of all time! They could've sung about ANY subject in that tune & it'd still be FANTASTIC.
