As we celebrate the United Nations International Decade of People of African Descent, it is more important now than ever that civil society, creatives, and members of the international community and diaspora, engage directly in the conversations that shape our communities and the world.
On March 25, 2021, join us for a celebration of the UN International Decade of People of African Descent - "The Struggle, The Beauty, The Hope" featuring a special presentation of the “Say My Name” Art Exhibition. This engaging experience will include: reflections from members of the arts and diplomatic community, a conversation with Signature African Art UK Gallerist Khalil Akar and featured exhibition artists, and a brief audience Q&A.
Curated by London-based Signature African Arts gallery director Khalil Akar and presented by American filmmaker Ava DuVernay the exhibition will take place in both London and Los Angeles. Each show features 13 African artists who have used their talents to create portrait paintings and sculptures to articulate the many layers of Black history and racial struggles on a global scale while paying tribute to prominent figures both past and present, including George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, whose brutal killings by police sparked the rise of this year’s Black Lives Matter movement worldwide.
This event is in collaboration with the following partners: Steering Committee for the Alliance of NGOs and CSOs for South-South Alliance; Signature African Art Gallery UK; the UN Department of Global Communications Civil Society Unit; UNESCO, Millennium TV; The Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts; Create 2030; UNA-USA Bronx Chapter; Black Professionals in International Affairs; the World is Watching; Giotour Media; and Arts in Medicine Project.
This event is recognized by the United Nations Department of Global Communications Civil Society Unit and UNESCO.
This is a virtual event and registration is open to the general public. Questions? Please contact africandescent2021@gmail.com.
