      You want to be careful with distilling because in the process of making ethanol alcohol you also make other chemicals like methanol which can make you blind if not kill you,.And its not as safe as spirits from the shop. unless you have a way of taking it out of the freeze distilled solution. If its in weak concentrations like beer or cider then its not a big deal. But you can really go blind if youre not careful with this. Methanol poisoning s not something to joke about

    Yes you're right, most yeast's have an upper limit to alcohol tolerance of about 16%. That said, the yeast i provide with the home brewing caps brewing kits can in fact reach up to 20 - 22%. It's a bespoke champagne yeast strain with a very high alcohol tolerance. It's also incredibly fast acting and with a bit of extra nutrient added has an unbelievable flocculation level. Thanks for your comments.

  • @homebrewingcaps

    An air lock is a useful brewing tool. But a home brewing cap is designed to be able to handle higher amounts of pressure. A home brewing cap is superior for brewing carbonated drinks like ciders, beers and sparkling wines. They perform equally when brewing non carbonated beverages so an air lock is still OK to use in some instances. Thanks for your question.

    Yes thanks for that, that is true. I DO mention this on my website and there is a FREE quick home brew guide available for everyone on there too. There IS a way to brew even if there are preservatives in the juice, however it requires an additional boiling process. Thanks for your comment.

    Thanks for your comments. Activating the yeast is optional. I tend not to bother and i rarely have problems brewing so i don't see the necessity of it.

  • @homebrewingcaps
    @homebrewingcaps  11 років тому +1

    Adding water will most likely just weaken the flavours in your drink. It's the equivalent to diluting a glass of fruit juice with water. If you don't mind the watered down taste then it's absolutely fine to do and it won't effect the yeast's ability to produce alcohol. Thanks for your question.

  • @homebrewingcaps
    @homebrewingcaps  12 років тому +1

    You could probably put brewers yeast into juice and screw a home brewing cap on the bottle in 30 seconds or less. The point of the title is to say that it takes only 30 seconds of effort to brew an alcoholic drink but yes you would have to wait a few days for the yeast to ferment the available sugars before drinking. I understand your point though, i will consider changing the title of the video.

  • @Haddley333
    @Haddley333 11 років тому +1

    That's the point, i started with the "e-z caps" and thought it was a great tool to learn. However - I could never get the alcohol content I wanted. Sweet juice with low alcohol = headache. So i upgrated to a 6 gallon fermenter and BAM 13% alcohol in 7 days - and it tasted like real wine.

    Adding more yeast isn't really necessary because the yeast naturally multiplies itself in a positive environment i.e. if lots of sugar is available for the yeast to feast on. More yeast may simply speed up fermentation slightly but that's about it.

    Wow It takes you 3 days to put juice in a bottle? ;) When i say it takes 30 seconds I'm talking about the set up time. I could put some sugar and juice into a bottle, add yeast and cap it in 30 seconds. That's all the work you need to do. You can then leave the bottle on its own and forget about it. It's not going to magically turn into alcohol though you will have to wait a couple days for fermentation to take place but i figured people would already know that.

    As someone who has done a LOT of home brewing, there is far more to it than is discussed in this video.
    Yes, if you do what he says, and you use a juice without preservatives, then you will make alcohol. Whether you can stand the taste of it or not is another story.
    This is good for a science experiment, but I wouldn't drink it unless I was desperate.

      Idk i just got here but you can use an Airlock it will cost you about 5 dollars or you can just use a ballon that has a little hole in it tied to the bottle with a rubber band

    Thanks for the comment, I appreciate it. Yes the cap uses a pressure valve to release a measured amount of pressure to allow the drink to carbonate whilst simultaneously preventing any kind of bottle explosion from the gas build up. And you're right, anything that gets people into homebrewing is a good thing. Cheers!

    I still have the two caps I originally ordered 10 years ago and they still work. Such a cool thing. Too bad you don't sell tem anymore, but I know I could go to the hardware store and make them from scratch if push came to shove. So elegantly simple :) Thanks!

      @@paulhunte383 You don't need a special cap at all, it's basically just an airlock, which you can buy from amazon or any brewers store, or simply just put a baloon over the bottle. Basically all it is is an airlock that stops bacteria from getting in but allows the gas to escape, even stabbing a small hole in a plastic cap may suffice, not a lot of money or time is invested in this kind of brew so it isn't as much of a priority. Especially if you are going to drink it soon.

    It works by holding a particular level of pressure in the bottle, but not too much so the bottle cap doesnt explode off. It holds just enough to allow creation of carbonated drinks and then releases the excess pressure. It also allows you to remove the secondary fermentation step from the brewing process. You can go straight to bottling for storage or drinking immediately after fermentation. Theres no transferring to other vessels so chances of contamination are lessened. Thanks for your Q.

      @Youri Rossewij im pretty sure the alcohol starts killing the yeast

  • @homebrewingcaps
    @homebrewingcaps  11 років тому +6

    The resulting brew will often taste incredibly similar to the original juice used in fermentation. However If your brew is very sweet and still contains a lot of sugar then the yeast may not be finished fermenting (although two weeks is plenty of time to complete fermentation). You could try adding a little more yeast to kick start the fermenting again as it might be a stuck fermentation. You're right the fact that your drink is fizzy means that the fermentation process was working.

    Thanks for the comment natthane4. Everything can be bought from my website or through my ebay shop. The bottle cap will fit on any bottle with a neck size of 28mm which if you're in the UK is pretty much every fizzy drinks bottle. We deliver internationally so you can order from anywhere in the world. If you want to find out more about homebrewing check out my website homebrewingcaps. com. Cheers.
