The name of the artist that made the portrait is another fiction easter egg. D Gray is a nod to 'Dorian Gray', the main character from the novel 'The Portrait of Dorian Gray'. For those who don't know, the basic premise of that story is a man has a portrait that absorbs his impurities and sins, and so he stays eternally young and living a selfish, hedonistic lifestyle while his portrait ages and deforms with his corruption.
Now that you defeated the boss you might want to visit Adelina again! For most this is the hardest boss, I've seen people spent 5 hours on him, it even got nerfed super hard along Andreus and another boss you haven't seen yet, but Romeo it's still top 3 in terms of difficulty and it seems you didn't suffer a lot so great job!!! Pretty sure you are going to beat the game now!
You've become 'human' enough that the cat is no longer afraid of you. And you don't have to upgrade Phase 3 with Quartz to unlock Phase 4. You can do Phase 1 or 2
If you ever doubt you can beat a boss just remind yourself that you’re a Canadian not a Cantadian. (If you happen to be Cantonese just focus on the ‘can’ part)
I had the same panic screech when Romeo started doing his flamey sword combo at half life hahaha ! Great job on defeating him, one of the toughest second phase in the game for me.
The Aegis arm's parry timing is indeed different in-game than normal weapon parrying. You have to account for the animation of P bringing the shield to bare, so you need to try and guard roughly a half-second sooner than you would otherwise.
1:20:43 : In Elden Ring terms, we call that "wooooohooowoooohooogoood" wombo combo the "Waterfowl Dance". Pray you never realize what it means, cause man it feels like they really took inspiration from it! Also congrats on killing Romeo, that second phase is a real obstacle
Waterfowl is way worse to deal with. This one you can just knock him out of the transition and he won't try again until he's almost dead. Won't work for M.
@@djx7134 oh I'm not saying it's to a similar level, but it's definitely the closest thing in this game in terms of "it never ends and if you fuck up to avoid it you die"
When I first got into these souls games Welonz believe it or not but I got into them for the fascinating lore and stories even the way it's delivered like reading item descriptions, occasional dialogue, etc.. it took some time but eventually I enjoyed the bosses as I came to realise they are the crux of what makes these games good, learning the attacks, their timings, etc.. I say all this to say while I know you here for the story and lore first I hope you enjoy the bosses even if if they do occasionally make you tired and frustrated trust me we all know.
King of Puppets, emo analysis: - Basically a theater kid who wants to fight us in an opera house that's burning down. - He has longer hair than us, covering one eye. - His hair is white while ours is black. - He uses a Grim Reaper's scythe. - His name is Romeo. Priceless😅
Romeo took me like 3-4 hours to get through and was, for me, far and away the biggest difficulty spike in the game. I think it may be due in part to my weapon choice using the booster glaive, but for me he was both the hardest and least satisfying boss. Which is sad because King of Puppets is one of my favorites. Great work on it. There's still some other hard bosses of course, but i personally feel youre through the "worst" of it. If you could handle this fight that well, you can handle anything else. Pretty much all the bosses from here on out are just great boss after great boss.
This was not my favorite "Soulslike". That's probably still Bloodborne. But this game has, IMO. the most consistently high-quality bosses. Even the reskins were unique enough to feel like a different boss.
I notice that you have trouble landing stagger attacks, remember you can use fable arts to trigger them. If you use your patient smash on your holy sword you can just ignore an enemy's hit and trigger the stun, leading to the fatal attack for massive damage. Alternatively, you can charge up your heavy attack from a distance and try to get the enemy to walk into the swing.
Absolutely incredible fight Welonz!!! You beat one of the biggest roadblocks in the game!! For what was once considered a mere possibility, I think achieving the finale is well within your grasp. I was getting so nervously hyped when you were charging up the fable attack on that last attempt. Freaking amazing that it staggered the boss, but maan you had me on the edge of my seat.
King Of Puppets is great, for both story and gameplay. Also one of the hardest bosses, he's a roadblock on new game, but new game+ with the boosted damage makes the second phase brutal.
After The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood merch thingy when can we expect a Lies of P portrait nose merch 👀 I think Romeo is one of the main skillchecks in the game, and you did great. I've said this multiple times now but it's awesome seeing you get better and better. Btw, you could've just run away from the singing spiders, the explosion is just a tiny area of effect around them. Also, you missed a ladder at 47:41, it's a minor thing iirc but just in case you want to visit in a later episode.
23:45 Loool. Good AI, though. (Also, Winter Lantern flashbacks) 50:55 For experiment's sake, try reloading on the spot via main menu (works in most Souls) 01:20:42 This is where the fun begins 01:26:40 You might need another fix of *that* feeling sooner than you'd admit
This boss was hell for me when I got there. Do not be afraid to summon the specter if you need to, trust me it will help you a lot if needed. Summoning involves the fountain outside a boss door that you use a item on, you probably have a lot so use them when needed.
"That was such a bad spot to get the butterfly" I don't know how to tell you this, but that's totally by design. But hey, at least they don't speed toward cliffs and throw themselves off just to make you chase after them into a stupid, clumsy death like back in 2009. All that aside; Hail to the king, baby! Coolest boss fight in the game in my opinion.
I don't mind too much when bosses have two phases, because I eventually get better at the first phase and start getting into the second phase faster, but having to walk to the boss every time kills me. I wish there was a stargazer right outside every boss.
Dude, Dark Souls and Dark Souls II were so much worse ... some of those boss runs were several minutes long. And you had to run past hordes of enemies. But the actual bosses were a lot easier. Dark Souls hardest boss is probably about mid-diff in this or Elden Ring (depending upon what you used, Elden Ring is crazy unbalanced).
10:55 I appreciate the references to other classic literature. I can't wait to see how NEOWIZ expands on the lore. 54:48 Who raised you, P?! 1:33:20 Did you know that the song at the end is actually a cover? 'Feel' appeared in an older NEOWIZ game, DJMAX, as a really upbeat song. I think Memory of Beach is another one too. Out of curiosity, have you gotten really, really angry at a boss and cut the rage out of the final vid?
Congrats on beating the boss, that one looked like a real pain! Similarly I hated the Mantis Lords boss fight in Hollow Knight because it took forever, with possible death on the way included, just to get back to the area.. like please, just let me practice the boss! That alone is hard enough already :P
Ah, finally, a boss Welonz also has to grind her teeth against. I feel like no matter who you are, every Souls-Game will have one Boss that gives you unreasonable headaches more than the other Bosses do. Every player has their specific playstyle and you can never defeat all bosses with just one playstyle. I think the reason you had such problems with Romeo specifically was because you had a very defensive playstyle so far, and Romeo kinda really does not allow for that. You already realized a lot of that by yourself, like understanding the points in the boss fight where he is "open" and capitalizing on it, but playing truly defensive is usually never the way to go: It does not help you win, it just makes you lose slower. It was one of the things I actually also had to learn the hard way: Not respecting the boss and being constantly in their face, going "monkey-mode" if you will, is more often than not the way to go. Use flasks standing right next to them instead of tumbling away first. Dont refelxively jump back at the end of their combo, since you miss out on a lot of counterattack opportunities. Dont panic-roll away father than you need to (quite often, only one tumble would have sufficed). I also agree with your assessment that you should not practice while tired. Sure, training muscle memory is what you can do even when tired, but realizing the flaws in your gameplay will not come as naturally to you.
I haven’t seen the Disney movie “Pinocchio” in twenty plus years, but I think there was a cat in it too that lived with Geppetto and Pinocchio. It’s funny that it’s actually a cat in this game whereas some other names from characters in the movie have been making an appearance, but aren’t (seemingly so far) the same. Won’t say any spoilers on who they are since you mentioned you hadn’t seen the movie. I do think the movie gives you a little more insight on what’s going on especially when it comes to Gemini or things like the characters who wore the donkey heads.

Applause please!. :) Romeo is a big nut to crack in the game, but you managed him absolutely great. Loved it.
One of the harder fights in the game, for sure.
Congratulations, Welonz! Easily one of the toughest (and most rewarding) challenges in the game
Love this boss a lot! The feeling of accomplishment after these fights is why I like playing souls games.
Welonz: “That singing! We can’t be near it when it’s singing.”
Proceeds to get near it when it’s singing lol
in new game+ you can actually understand all the puppets are saying and it's quite sad :(
