When I try to open up peoples horizons and knowledge from the things I've learned over the years from you and from my own experience-(1st Btn./1 st Mar.Div.) I see the myopia, even anger in people who I try to help. I don't know how you keep doing it my friend. Been with the project since '08. Have the pleasure of a Microtech Ultratech special edition # 101 of 200. Thank you for your patriotism. I watched the TNP fellowship in Utah. I wish I could have been there. Remain stalwart, GOD bless.
Excellent point. I failed to fully incorporate your entire statement. I think also that you are right in your new assessment. It starts at a very early age, too. I have a nine year old daughter who is inundated, even with the little TV we allow her, with ads for toys and games and such. We are trying hard to teach her about practical spending and saving, and she is showing discipline, but she has friends already who cannot leave a store without spending money. It is worrisome. Enjoy your day.
Just last night I rewatched your old survivor knife videos! I guess I read your mind Nutn. With all the new subs, the time is right to do some skills lessons. I started learning from you back in 09 and it never gets old. You have stayed independent and true and it is much appreciated. Stay the course.
Rodent 9 for the win, but that Rodent 6 is just gorgeous! All these years and I still love your vids Nutn! Great Job and thanks for your efforts!...Much appreciated! Peace
Just like old times, watching Nutn do a large survival knife review! I'm glad you found time to put one of these videos together for us. I think they're so foundational to TNP. Press on!
Hey nutn, im not sure if youll ever read this or not, but incase you do...i want to thank you for your time and dedication you put into your channel. I know your busy, and all, but you still do your best to find time for your tnpr's. you have really been cranking out videos lately, and its awesome!!! Thanks again- cw
That's a great line up of very functional blades. Thanks for another great review Nutn. Some guys still don't seem sold on the survival knife idea. Here is my 2 cents on the subject. If you want to build a log cabin with only one tool, then take the axe. But, the axe won't do well making feather sticks, cleaning fish or game, making snare triggers, and many other fine tasks. It can do all those things, but it's like commuting to work in a bulldozer because it can clear fallen trees.
For those interested in the Rodent 6 knife know that the Spec Ops master sheath in small (they say up to 6" blade) will fit this knife perfectly. Even though the Rodent 6 blade is 6-3/8" it will still fit in like a glove. I keep one sheath attached to my battle belt for SHTF and another sheath for when I go in the woods. The knife is a beast and excels as a fighter but is also superb in the woods. Thickest tip I have ever seen on a knife and great belly for cleaning animals. I also have the 711.
I've got my Hoodlum, and love it, but I still loved this review. Even though I'm out of the market, I love watching your review. Such a fun and quality production. Thanks Nutn.
I love the swamp rat rodent 9, I love it so much I bought 2... One sits in the safe and the other gets used no problems at all what's so ever...great knife
Man I gotta say 2 things. 1st my fiancé would hunt us both down cause this is a sick knife and I want one of each! 2nd is that I think there are a lot of fanboys in the nutnfancy project and I am probably one of them but the ONLY reason for that is because there are lots of people that do reviews but hardly any that have the truth basis, the honesty and devotion to the viewers and not the reviewer getting free stuff. Thank you nutn and thank you TNPrs for supporting this awesome dude!
I picked up my Rodent 6 for 190 after shipping, plus i just ordered a custom leather sheath from Skystorm Leatherworks. Love the reviews, helped me choose my new camping knife
Ah, I live in Elmore County. It is predominantly rivers, swamps, lots of random ponds, and a good mix of evergreen and hardwood around here. Fall is definitely the best time to Backpack. Have you ever been to the Sipsy Wilderness? Great up there.
Must say it again, nutnfancy is definitely my go to channel if I need any great review on any of the equipment I was going to buy for use / collecting. Keep it up !
The Swamp Rat Rodent 6 is a cheaper version of the Busse Team Gemeni Light Brigade. (The knife Daryl Dixon carries in The Walking Dead) The thing is bulletproof and compared to the Busse it isnt quite as big, and way cheaper, yet retains most of the quality features. They are both awesome, but I would go with the Rodent 6 as it is far cheaper.
I break down wood into kindling all the time. I've tried big chopping knives, hatchets, and so on. For me, the Condor Bushcraft Parang works the best. At 24 ounces, it may be too heavy to tote around in the mountains, but for processing wood for your stove, or firepit, it would be hard to beat. Like all Condor products, the edge needed tweaked. But, for $39.00, this thing chops like a beast, and is fun to use. I think it would baton through a fire hydrant.
They're not meant to replace a hatchet, per se, but work as a last resort if, for whatever reason, it's the only tool you have available. If you have a hatchet or an axe in your kit, great! If a large knife is what you have available, then be prepared to work much harder to accomplish the same result, but accomplish it it will. It could easily be argued that a large survival knife would be a better choice as the "only tool" because of its versatility vis-a-vis an axe or hatchet.
I like TNP for the most part, however I feel like nutn unnecessarily defends himself/talks about how he's not a fanboy, ect. for no reason way too much. People who aren't fanboys and do their own thing don't find it necessary to tell everyone so on an ongoing basis. Let your actions and principals talk for you instead of tooting your own horn constantly. That's why many people dislike this guy and don't watch when otherwise they would. Some food for thought.
As usual I watch a video of Nutn's and I get the want for a new grail knife...Awesome...I love and carry my BK9 as my big knife and a edc of rat 3, Ontario...I also have a sk5 cold steel trailmaster..and the list goes on...No one knife fits all jobs but it sure is fun collecting and my knife addiction....Plus I get to see what they are capable of first....Awesome video Sir.
I got a swamprat for an xmas present a few years back love it. It takes a lot of abuse. Hacked through metal fencing with it stood up pretty damn well. Nice to have a less well known, cool knife.
I dislike most knife reviews in general because they're relatively boring (low on action, high on talk) however I really like that you bring in direct competitors and near substitutes not just for price point but in practicality (cheaper knives capable of replacing more expensive ones)
I think it comes down to, as Nutn says, POU. Most machetes are not made for North American mountain hardwoods. Most machetes again, are made of lower quality steel that is designed to slice through grasses, vines, and slender trees at most. It isn't suitable for prying, and I don't know if I would want to go out and start batonning with a machete, to make firewood, from an 7inch round of oak, maple, or other hardwood. If it works for you though, good.
Before I go out into the wilderness, I get pumped up watching your videos, especially this one, depending on how long the trip is, my knife carry, or how serious the trip is, usually, I am a 3knife carry, a backpack is part of my system, I think I refined the type of knives I carry, I also think, I have picked the best knives for ne, my Swamp Rat's are my Rodent Solution, the Ratmandu, the Rodent 7, and the Rodent 9, in my opinion the best knives for the money in the world, Deferentially Tempered 52100 Ballbearing Steel SR101, great great, great, by luck, and not my doing, I got my Busse set as they came into production, my Anneversary Mean Street LE, my Son of Badger, perhaps my favorite size Bushcraft knife, my INFI Ratmandu, the Sarge 7, and my Anneversary Straight Handle Battle Mistress LE, both set's are within a 1/2" of eachother, except for the Rodent 9, and the Battle Mistress, the similarity is important to me, as I go from one set to the other, I read a recent post in the BladeForum, how these guys survived a vehicle accident, cut their way out with a Swampie, and Swamp Rat replaced the knife, it was a little danage, but what the heck, he cut his way out of the truck, steel vs. steel, exceptable. I really enjoy your video's, especially this one, as I'm going into Southern Ohio, for some R&R, Thanx NutN.
I do agree with your comment in part, and is exactly why I said, "is followed without emotion or opinion." I was attempting to point out that many of us (myself included) fall prey to slick marketing and perhaps overpay and/or overbuy products that really don't perform that much better than the alternatives. Maybe attaining things out of emotion and not function or usefulness is why so many Americans are largely in debt. I do thank you for your comment.
Thank you! After being laid off and a divorce, my financial status went through a dramatic change. I have had to reassess what is necessary vs what is luxury. In the Marine Corps we NEVER had the best gear, but I also never had a problem completing a task or did I feel that I could not accomplish what was demanded of me due to inadequate equipment. I hear all the experts now telling us we need a 3000$ AR or 400$ pack to be squared away. You are your most valuable tool and asset, not your gear.
I like the ESEE line of knives. 1095 heat treated by Rowen. I prefer the Izula II, RC4, and RC6. You can get an RC6 for about $130, an RC4 for about $120, and an Izula II for about $80. And you get a razor sharp knife, belt clip, kydex sheath, lanyard, and a lifetime no questions asked warranty. The RC4 is in my opinion the best value. I am not a fan boy, just a guy who appreciates good tools for a reasonable price.
I have 2 Busse Tank Busters and on small 4" camp style knives and they are great. I use on of the Tank Busters for my hog blade and keep the other one in mint condition. They are awesome for hog blades; bone and skin are easy to cut through. The one down side is the hair on a pig will dull any knife blade steel.
Great video Nut'N, I really enjoy it, it simply pumps me up, and "tis is the season", you know Busse don't hold on to there styles very long, so I had to make some quick dicissions, first the Anneversary Mean Street LE, then the Sarge 7, no longer made, then the Anneversary Straight Handle Battle Mistress LE, I really wanted a 5-6" blade, but Busse didn't have any in that size, but came out with the Son of Badger, so I got it, I was happy with the set, which I usually get a 4knife set, I was very happy, the Son of Badgrr, soon became my favorite bushcraft knife, at 4 3/4", lo and behold, I got a notification, that Busse was having a first come first serve, on a drawing on a few left over INFI Ratmandu, from the 2014 Blade Show, man, I hit my knee's right there, and there, the light shined on me. I was able to get a INFI Ratmandu, not that I planed it that way, but my Swamp Rat's, and my Busse's, are within a 1/2" of eachother, great huh, except for the A.S.H.B.M.LE, and the R9, but how lucky can a guy get, Every season, I bring up this video, every season, because, right now, my Swampies are my go to knives, the Busse's will be used in some up coming serious trips, up north.
0:10 to 3:28 And that is exactly why I subscribed to this channel. If I ever want information on a gun or knife I come here. Because I know I'm getting a real, unbiased and well tested review of the product when it's coming from Nutn.
YES! excellent take on the forums. I only post on one, and have never had nor seen any elitism on that particular one. Not so on many others. TNP is my "go to" for info for many reasons; some of which are truth, intelligence, consistency.
Loved the review. The sheath ideas were fantastic!!! That had always held me back on these blades. I feel I can take the plunge now, thanks!!! My wife will hate you for this. Haha
These are awesome knives- but for those who don't know, INFI steel isn't just a "bit" better- it's easier to sharpen, stays sharp longer, (hard use cutting,) and very corrosion resistant. Whether that makes Busse's worth the extra dough is up to you. If you live in wet/humid areas, consider it strongly!
you'll be happy to lug around a hatchet after you've used it a few times, and realized that the day would've been much harder with only a big knife. medium knife + hatchet = a more pleasing time out there.
I would like to see reciews of the Kershaw Camp 14, Ka-Bar Johnson Adventure Potbelly, and Ka-Bar ZK Swabbie. I love the continuous sweeping belly of these blades.
Again Thanx for doing a video on some of my favorite knives, the Busse's, I also have the Sarge 7, the Anniversary Mean Street, and one of my favorite sets, because I'm a 3knife carry guys, I mentioned them below post, again Thanx Bro.
Your right they are very seldom linear, but isn't that the point I am trying to make? And also remember I said,"Assuming the price-quality ratio holds true," yes that is a generalization... but for the sake of brevity I generalized. Thanks for your comment.
Yep, saw the southeast fire making video, picked up that knife, great location on this knife testing video as well. Well looks like the knives are a great alternative to the rat knives. Think that's what they remind me the most of.
DC Batons all the time. Even though part of the intro video had some chopping, nutn was speaking about batoning. You don't have to chop to get through a tree, you can baton your cuts around it, so if a 9" is too heavy, a 6" can baton through a tree no problem.
Another great review, thanks for the info. I went to the sight to check out prices and they're actually reasonable compared to other knives reviewed in this same group.
Hey Nuttin If you like the Rodent 9 you have to check out the scrapyard 1311 if you can find it. Best woods knife I ever owned. 13 inch blade. Thick enough to be a heavy chopper but long and fast enough to brush clear.
I like big knives but that solution hit me as being exactly its namesake the moment you placed it on the table. obviously not a chopper but but that aside it looks solid as hell and like it could handle any job you could throw at it.
Hey Nutn. You are the god father of this type of videos. You inspired me to make videos throwing my hat in the ring I still have respect for my elders. If you cover a blade or gun. I consider that the ultimate review. Double owl. Watch all your videos. But my favorites are reviews and backpacking adventures. You have affected all aspects of my system. Made me check everything for sawc. Drop that Glock 20 review on us.
Thanks for the video nutn. I was all for these knives until I found I would have to go to a secondary source for a sheath. At those price points I can't see not getting at least some kind of simple nylon sheath. I don't want to buy a secondary sheath and hope it fits to my liking. Keep the reviews coming.
awesome review i wached a video of yours about 10 days ago and now im hooked!!! i have already wached about 75 of your videos now! my GF is not likeing you very much though lol you deffinatley got a new TNP'er Thanks for all the great work!!!
Nutnfancy, have you ever used something like NeverWet on a knife blade to keep moisture off it to prevent rust? I've been interested in trying something like that out, and was wondering if it's more effective than just using oil to protect the blade.
TNP/all: is there a sidearm/caliber you would recommend for a camper/hiker? Northeast Ohio.. not anything big but mostly for self-protection, coyotes, maybe wild dogs, etc. For an older person so has to be easy to operate and safe. Thanks..
True enough... and the axe has not been made that can replace the machete/scythe and draw knife uses of a large knife either. Different tools, with different uses... I'm an axe guy personally -but there's nothing wrong with big knives... they have their place.
Hey man, I hit a rock with my R-TAK II while batoning and I put a warble in the steel close to the edge. Surprisingly, the edge didn't chip. I kept using it the last 4 days (no choice) and it split logs like a champ. Not sure what to do with the warbled edge, tho. I'm pretty sure I can't sharpen it out.
Agree but if you could choose only one in wooded areas it would probably be an axe if you had the skilset which very few have today. So nutnfancy opinion about the large knife is probably right.
I think he explained in this video why he does what he does -hack/chop/chip/tinder with survivor knife other than baton. He is reviewing a knife not show "how to use a knife". he does that all those things so we know we don't go waste our money on knives that we might regret. I personally do things differently than Nutn, but he does damn good job of being objective on items he reviews.
I like both producers. I don't see it in your comments, but in many others it is as if there is some unseen urge of competition. I am for Liberty, for each mans right to choose a knife, a hatchet or both. More power to Liberty. I think I want both. ;-)
Hey Nutn....have you done any reviews on Blind Horse Knives. Im torn between them and Busse swamp rat 9. Just curious. Huge fan and love the reviews. Keep em coming!
He is right that the large knife is the best survival tool for most people but it is not the best survival tool. It is an axe if you have the skilset with it. This is for wooded areas. To be really proficent with an axe it takes a long time and more or less a daily use with diffrent kind of axes. Like in old time scandinavia were the axe was the most important tool for hundredes of years, It was used in the forrest, building houses and for going to war.
Nutn just a quick question on your TCE concept, How do you distinguish the difference between calories and energy? from a physiological standpoint aren't they one in the same?
Hi Nut'N, please do a video on the handle design on the Swamp Rat Rodent 9, and the Rodent 7, your choice of the Swamp Rat Set, is so close to mine, that if the Rodent 7 was available at the time of this video, we would have identical sets, I have the same knives, except I don't have the Rodent 6, but I have the Rodent 7, in the near future, I will have the Rodent 6, because I really like that size, anyhow, please do a video on the unique handle shape of the R9, and R7, I would like to hear your pro's, and con's, on their shape, I know their basically the same, but, two different functioning knives, should be interesting.
Hi NutN, I finally completed my Swamp Rat Knives Set I have all the newer production of knives except for the Hawks I went traditional and I got the 2hawks Double Bit Hatchet and the Voyager. In Ohio a Long Blade is very handy, so I got the Rodent Rucki it has a choil so I can finish the job without going for a smaller knife it's well balanced for such a long blade (15 1/2", I can also baton with it, I paired my Rodent 9 with my Ratmandu, my Rodent 7 with my Rodent 4, my Mod. Rodent 6 with my Rodent Solution, my Rodent 5 with my Rodent 3, having my Swampies for a while now their still my go to knives, and yes watching your productions I have the BK'S -9 and the O.K.C.'s Gen2 SP'S 53, 51, 49, 47, I like the Saber Grinds, I also have the Fallkniven A-1 and a Njord (Northern Light Series), the Bokor Vox Rold, the Ranger RD-9 most of the knives you showed, we have similar taste because they are great knives and you know t them pretty good I also have a vintage Trailmaster and a couple of Recon Scout's in CarbonV.and oh yeah (2) H.I. M-43 Khukuris, some I bought on your recommendation some I bought because I liked them by the way my Mod. Rodent 6 is becoming one of my fav's, I had it thinned and top gaurd taken off its still robust but a good slicer the blended area where the top gaurd was actually allows tge knife to be a better chopper and you can't hardly tell it was a Rodent 6 great review long time no see, and that Rodent Rucki is going to have good work outs since summer is nearing nice to see you again.
Not sure if i would ever use kydex for my knife's to me its just not reliable in cold/wet/icy weather. Where i live winters can be harsh especially if your outdoors camping or hunting. Lots of snow and ice. I had knife get stuck in kydex holster few times because it was sitting outside and got water inside of it and later on froze up. It took few hits to other object and fair amount of force to loosen the ice inside of it to get the knife out.
Mr. Nut N Fancy here I thought you were just a Cold Steel freak, working under the table for them, I thought you"Crafty" and believe me a turn off, the"Crafty part" but I have a few C.S.'s, Natchez San Mai, Trailmaster San Mai, Lorado Car'V, two Recon Scout's Car'V, three Recon Tanto, 3 diff steel's, Talwar San Mai, Black Sable, Black Rhino, a few others, but you hit the spot, I have a great 3knife Swamp set, Niner,Ratmandu, and the Solution, Thanx, Nut. Yar'da'Man.

The timing of this video is nuts!!! Past couple days I've been looking around for a large knive. Keep it up Nutn, you're the man!

I bought some time ago a RMD and sold all my others fixed blade knives - It's the ONE I need for hunting, camping, EDC...
Cheers from Bulgaria!
Love from Sweden, thank you for all the effort and the lessons you give us year after year...

I'm with you on that bro! Nutn knows his stuff. If you hike & use your kit hard, you can just tell he knows his stuff!

"your mileage may vary" sums up the opening monologue. Thanks
Great talk on POU, knife review & Kydex options. Good stuff buddy
0:10 to 3:28
And that is exactly why I subscribed to this channel.
Once again, a great large woods blade video! Thank you sir!
I have an all black Ratmandu. GREAT knife. Fun review, Nutn!
you'll be happy to lug around a hatchet after you've used it a few times, and realized that the day would've been much harder with only a big knife.
medium knife + hatchet = a more pleasing time out there.
The large survival knife has not been made that can replace or do the work of a proper hatchet or small axe.
Man those are sick! Thank you for the review. Love that rodent 6 with the kydex sheath.
Hey Nuttin. What are your thoughts on the Busse Battle Mistress? Busse is selling it again. Do you think 11" blade is too much?
I thought you were gonna break the Ratmandu CG for sure prying that nail. Great steel!
Love the Knife vids! The K-Bar heavy Bowie has been splitting wood for many a bonfire in my use!
Kryptonite gave me a laugh. Great review. Lovin' the woods blades.
Dude! One of my favorite new vids.
Keep the blade vids coming nutn!!! Thanks.
Great content as always. Thank you really much! Also I love the montage of your videos.
Thanks..
Great knife review Nutn, really like the Ratmandu CG that might be the next knife I get.
Serious question: Do you baton straight through a tree with yours? How is it any different than swinging a hatchet?
I wish I had time to watch TNP videos in one sitting....
Very well done. I have a lot to think about I really like this line, but im really liking that gso knife you just reviewed from pa...tough choice. .
Nice review and comps. Appreciate the sheath link.
Awesome... tell the truth and in the end it all sorts itself out... a lesson I learned the hard way
Nut, check out the Spec-Ops Sheath, Small for the Ratmandu, and it comes in a larger size, but the Sheath is excellent.
A slight bit north of you in cullman county thick hill country, mostly hardwoods, lots of muddy creeks. I prefer the late fall to hike.
I love these knives. Been eyeballing the Sykcos too.
Will probably end up with a Becker first thought to be honest. On a budget.
Do you have any new info on the ARX100, Do you plan on reviewing it? Please do. Great video as always!
Another good review, but as Nutn states maybe the Sykco series may offer more bang for the buck...I own the 911 and 411 lov them both.
been waiting for this vid for 3 years
Really Nice Review of there knifes, for my use a bit pricy & tnx for a honest review
I have found a small knife and a machete to be very useful over the years what are your opinions on this type of load out nutn?
FYI im in FL.
Thanks nutn. Very helpful.
Great vid! Glad I bought the RMD earlier this year. the prices went up like $20!
Yar'da'Man.
Great video as usual Nut'n
Thank you for the great video. Love the reviews.
The knives he demos just keep getting bigger and bigger.
