- A man arrested in connection with a long-unsolved string of killings on Long Island known as the Gilgo Beach murders has been identified as Rex Heuermann, an architect living across a bay from where some of the bodies were found, a law enforcement official told The Associated Press on Friday.

Can we all take a moment to thank Shannon Gilbert.... If it wasn't for her 911 call and search for her, even though she wasn't rescued led to the subsequent discovery of the bodies and the eventual arrest of rex. R.I.P Shannon Gilbert and all other 9 victims. Rot in p!$$ rex
I believe they also found her. Not right then but later
Yes.. thank you Shannon! May you RIP. Sad that she died however if it were not for her this may have gone on longer with so many more victims... also her 911 call needs further examination if other suspects involved. It was a very long call with a lot of information that at that time wasn't taken seriously enough.
My thoughts are with her family at this time - Shannon was as extremely brave girl who is owed so much credit for making that call in a line of work where that often doesn't happen.
RIP to all lost Gilbert family- first Shannon drowning naked in the brush - as was deduced by scpd medical coroner/examiner- Peter C. Hackett- look it up- she is not considered a victim/ she is considered a drowned heroin addict who got lost in the beach grass naked and slowly drowned in shallow water
Also her mother was decapitated by her daughter w special needs - Shannon’s sister whom spent a long time w scpd and also was a mentally ill person who had spent so many hours with police that soon thereafter her mother’s murder seemed suspicious
@@elizabethjane2619 and many ppl don’t believe she died on her own.
Many serial killers walking among us have stable home lives and employment. Examples include BTK, John Gacy, Gary Staynor, Gary Ridgeway, Ted Bundy, David Berkowitz, and Harold Shipman to name a few.
Serial killers, murderers, pedofiles, rapers... You just don't know..

I was surprised about how much information was given at the press conference about the evidence obtained. The prosecutor must feel very confident that they have their man.
The case is absolutely waterproof. I have been reading a lot about it since yesterday
I was thinking same thing. I don't recall esp right after a arrest giving this much info.
@pattymcnamara3090
I think there was alot of negative news that the law enforcement wasn't doing enough on this case.
They can't have news conferences early in an investigation. Just because they can't talk about the case, it doesn't mean no one is working on it.
Hence this lengthy news conference to let the public know all that has happened over the years.
So many different members of law enforcement came together and worked long and hard to bring justice for the victims and their families.
I commend them all for their dedication, long hours they put in and relentless efforts.
New Yorkers should be proud of them all.
No. It's the opposite actually. When a prosecutor is confident of the evidence they keep their mouth shut. Only when they are pushing nonsense do they attempt to influence a potential jury pool and the public with the press. For example: his dna being found on a victim is irrelevant. They are ladies of the night. Several people's dna was found on the bodies. He is an admitted user of ladies of the night. This isn't evidence. Not is using burner phones evidence. Most men using this type of service do go to great means to hide it from their wives.
They zeroed in on Rex because someone he's related to submitted dna to 123 & me.
There is NOT a group of serial killers using the same dumping ground. The same means of death. The same dumping system of camo colored burlap. Etc, and we know for a fact the killer had to be a doctor with attachments to law enforcement. Why? Negate Jane doe #3 and baby Jane doe are mother and daughter. There is only one person who could deliver the child, remove all placenta and get the mother to continue her work without her going to the police. There is no way in hell I would keep my mouth shut while you kept my child and forced me to work that life. No way in hell. Unless you had all the power. Especially after you've killed my child. The killer has to be a doctor or a police officer with medical knowledge and access to heroine that no one would notice missing.
He has no business doing live meetings. He's repeated everything and tripping over every other word. He's going to get a talken to when this conference is finished, I don't think he's supposed to be telling all these details.
Wow. The newscaster says, "Serial killers are known to commit crimes." IF that is news. to you, then keep watching. You may learn something.
Whoa, no death penalty in New York . That is unfortunate.
They're looking at his holiday home in South Carolina, there they do have the DP

This is my first time here. You are right. JB is the best. I'm a new subscriber, a genuine believer and a fascinated fan. And I loved when JB offered both sides of the argument. Trust was built for me right there. This woman doesn't have an angle or an agenda, she has a mission underway to find out the truth and then help us comprehend it. JB, you are great! Thank you. I would not be following this, but it is a truly bizarre murder mystery that is fascinating to watch unfold. It's just sad that real vulnerable people got so badly taken advantage of. My heart goes out to these girls. I'm so sorry such evil exists.
This is truly disturbing. I pray for these families who are reliving this horror all over again. May God give them strength, comfort, and peace.
Not being an ass I swear- but when I look at comments like this, I know the intention is great, but my thought is always -well then where was he in at when these women were getting tortured and killed and the victims then families had to go through that? that’s why I don’t get it.
God created the people allow this. Your god is a monster.
@@Beefer-e4j Yes, it can be hard to accept or understand such evil deeds and your question is a valid one. I'm just a Christian layperson, not a theologian. But simply, people were given free will and can choose to do good or evil deeds in this earthly life. Apparently God did not want puppets. God does not always restrain free will (I believe at times He likely does), but I believe He helps and strengthens us in dealing with the evil deeds of others. Someday everything will be made right but not necessarily on this earth. Our earthly lives are not even an eye-blink compared with eternity. Therefore keep the faith. These are my beliefs and basically the beliefs of millions or billions of others. And you did ask.
My heart goes out to these victims' loved ones and I too pray that earthly justice will now be served and that they will find strength, comfort, and peace. I can't even imagine what they've faced so far.
The major takeaway: eat your pizza crust
Thank you even in Scandinavia we follow these cases!
And even in South Africa 🇿🇦
Yikes, Walt might want to think about what he says before he speaks next time. Aside from the fact that the statement that sex workers “aren’t missed” only serves to perpetuate the mindset that people of certain job or income level are less worthy, you need to consider the fact that the family members of these women and one person who’s gender is still unknown are going to watch media like this and will hear the things you say, and surely “missed” their loved ones. Nor does one’s childhood or circumstance in upbringing determine addiction issues or job choice. And yes, sex work is a job, and it’s a far older one than “investigative journalism” or UA-camr.
JB at least has the tact and humility to be careful about how he speaks about victims.
They are someone’s children just like y’all are.
Absolutely, agree. Sadly, their profession or circumstances made them more of a target for this monster. Regardless, they were humans who left loved ones behind
@carrieburke2498 you just summarized that perfectly. It was a factor in why they were targeted, but yeah Walt did not express his opinion in a respectful manner.
I agree with you! Walt needs to be reprimanded for contributing to stigma and dehumanizing victims. On a positive note, I was impressed by how far the DA and police had progressed in terms of being nonjudgmental and putting the family members of victims literally up front. It sends the right message that these women were humans and have loved ones like anyone else. It was also heart-warming to see the police chief hug each family before speaking. I grew up in the UK and was a teenager when the Yorkshire Ripper was bludgeoning women to death. The police made multiple screw ups in that case and didn't really care for a while because most victims were sex-workers. The cops made horrid, insensitive statements. One victim was a young teenage girl and the police discounted her case for a while because she wasn't a sex worker! Women couldn't win either way! Today is progress.
They r not trying to say anything negative about sex workers, nist what most analyst/ Journalist usually say. they r not trying to victimize the victims.
It's also older than a biochemist and a brain surgeon. I agree with most of what you said (strongly disagree that upbringing can't contribute to higher chance of drug abuse which increases chance of addiction) but agree that they are victims and people and deserve our compassion just as much as anyone but I always thought the "older profession" argument meant very little to push that point across to people who think they are disposable and undeserving of our compassion. I also think fewer get into the profession purely out of "choice" than otherwise. Many are roped in on drugs and pressured or forced to do it and can't get out of the cycle, or trafficked in as kids which is only ramping up the last couple years for obvious reasons. Most people have that negative "disposable" mindset due to the illegal nature of the work, not because they don't think it can ever be considered a "job". If they made it legal but in regulated businesses it would probably cut way down on the other crime associated around prostitution, but I always like to err on the side of freedom so maybe I am biased.
Shannon and I are the exact same age (1985), and it's sad and scary 😨 when I think about a stolen life and her loved ones' pain. RIP 🙏🏻 Shannon and all the other victims.
I imagine it will be extremely difficult finding the right jury with how televised this has been. Is that even a thought?

Matching dna on a prostitute to a known user of prostitutes ISN'T EVIDENCE
JB I really like your style. You always think about everyone (victims, families, police, lawyers, the audience) and are so considerate to all of them. It's really so refreshing that anytime something like this press conference happens I can always count on you to deliver news that is humanized but not sensationalized. Thank you JB.
Perfectly said
Exactly! JB is so respectful of vicitms, families, audience, LE and also reminding of presumption of innocence until proven guilty.
Thank you for being respectful of the victims and truck line of work.
It was NOT ten bodies. It was ten women. It was 12 bodies, including a two year bold child, and a 22 year old Asian male.
I doubt he's responsible for every cadaver dumped there over the last 15 years.....
It could be more that’s all they found he might have done many more.
The man was found dressed in women's clothing, so he could also have been a transwoman.
What do you mean "bold child" ?
Why Asian male?

The wife and kids are victims too. Their lives will never be the same.
it would have been solved sooner if Burke would have let the FBI investigate the crime instead of refusing their help. Did Burke know him, was he covering up for the killer? it appears so to me.
I agree. But Burke was investigated as a suspect for a while then they cleared him of the murders.
As a victim of violent crime via the homicide of my brother in 1996...though time helps you to accept and to adapt, there is no such thing as "closure". That void never heals, that hole never closes. It's never filled, no matter how many grandkids you have or how many decades pass. You just learn to live on "through" it. It is a part of you now.
10+yrs is not necessarily a long time to solve a case like this. It depends on the tech available, the degradation of evidence, the willingness of witnesses to speak up...a multitude of issues. Even coping with different jurisdiction poses huge problems. I doubt they could have captured any suspect had they not all worked together.
My brother's homicide had witnesses...both in the perpetrators vehicle, as well as from a nearby store. No one spoke up. It was only once the brother of a witness in the vehicle, the perpetrator's friend, contacted my mom 4 yrs later, that we had a path to follow. And, it still took another 4yrs, 8yrs total, & a lot of relentless investigative work by my mom & myself, including pressure on the detectives, that the guy was caught & prosecuted.
I hope justice is served for these families, and the victims yet to be identified. They, & their families, may never get justice.💔
Closure ahhhh I hate that word I hate it even more when used by law enforcement while talking about family members of victims although I don't think it is used as much anymore but it still gets used too loosely in my opinion

Great job by all these agencies. They should have thanked Shannon Gilbert, she fought, she called 911 and that’s why all these bodies were even found. I wonder if this monster is the one who scared Shannon that last night of her life.
This is so amazing! Praise God he's locked up. He was going after a kid next going off his web searches
Where did you see that? How do you know what his web search was?
Really! Omg😮😢 where are you getting that from? Please share.
Thanks once again for doing your live feeds, JB, and Kudos to Suffolk County. It seems they've done a butt load of investigating! Bravo!
Not only are these cases complex, you only really get ONE chance to perform a good investigation. If you F up the first time on the wrong suspect, so much can get lost and go wrong and then you let down a family or families in this case. As a cop.. your warrants won’t be granted as easy. It’s so difficult.
Well I wouldn't count those chickens hatched just yet. I'm sure a great many male dna samples were found on those girls. There aren't 3 killers out there with the same mo and same dumping grounds with the same disposal methods. Do be so gullible
They get 3 chances. After the 3rd they can't retry him
Let alone that Shannons 911 call went unanswered and cops didn't even respond to it. A girl called scared for her life and they ignored her. Cops didn't even get there till an hour later when a neighbor called the cops about seeing a girl running and screaming
@@Benji-jj2bg agreed. I do not believe this is the man and if he is, which there is no evidence to support that he is a of yet, he sure didn't act alone.
@@phillipstroll7385there's evidence. They can't share yet all of what they have . Most serial killers do work alone . I mean it's not like he was dumping 3 bodies a night . He'd take one have his fun dump her and then to the next one so it's very plausible that he's a one man operation.

I lived in Long Island for the years when this was happening and I had to travel alone for my engineering work and yes, it was beyond frightening. You looked over your shoulder at everyone. Taxis, trains, late night getting into towns, it was nerve wracking. I was furious what the murderer was doing to these women and a child and to others, I knew, you know, I knew he would turn out to be that kind of a sick fat schmuck, hiding behind the mask of an educated man.
Sounds really fatphobic tbh. There was nothing to suggest the killer was overly large for you to just "know" it.

Serial killers can be pillars of the community and charming. That was true of John Wayne Gacy. BTK was the pastor of his church. If they all looked like Hollywood stereotypes we could catch them in a minute. Hiding in plain sight is the speciality of serial killers. What's making it harder for them to continue this is the evolution of forensic technology as well as DNA methodologies. Regarding your comments "a decent man" and "what a shame," you have based them on mistaken ASSUMPTIONS. When you jump to conclusions without evidence, you will likely reach the wrong answer. It reminds me of people calling Donald Trump "a good businessman." They assume because of his bluster that he must have a huge fortune and many successful businesses. He had neither but he's a good con artist. Serial killers are often master manipulators as well. As they say "don't judge a book by its cover."
@sadgorl This is bc most people don't know how to read &discern character &situations!
@scientistatwork4667 Completely FALSE statements about D.Trump, you have no idea what you're talking about, it's laughable!
These things should never be a congratulatory marathon for law enforcement for “putting aside their egos and working together” HELLO THAT IS THE BARE MINIMUM, your literal jobs, not you doing us all a solid. Now I thank them for their work, but this press conference should solely be a voice for the victims and the victims families. This should NOT be about police doing their jobs, that’s what we pay them for folks. To the families, my heart breaks over and over for you, may this be the beginning of some answers for you all.

And the poor families of the victims were "forced" to participate in this charade of appraisal show! 😢 Personally I felt it a mockery of the victims the way this show was orchestrated to praise each other for doing their payed jobs!
That was not a mob. That asked benign questions. Asking the attorney if he believes him is straight up clever.
They knew he wouldn't snitch him out, but his reaction was very telling. He is prepared to lose the case.
I think the Chevrolet Avalanche is a very important part of this story. I am a big guy over 6'2 and i am very uncomfortable driving small cars. The Fact that he matches a description by eye witnesses that would tie him to one of the victims, and he drove the same full size pickup at the times of the murder are pretty concrete in terms of evidence. Of course you can not only use this, but its not like the suspect drove a Toyota Yaris and then this guy is a big 6'4 dude who somewhat fits the description.
Very true they also found his wife’s dna on one of the victims along with his dna that alone will be hard to explain away.
@mac3176 they have to have more than just dna. He is a known user of s workers. But luckily I think they have solid evidence, thanks to the FBI resources.
My family is from Queens and Long Island. I never lived there but my mom did and she still has cousins and extended family there (I live about 4-5 hours north in upstate now). My Aunts were teens back in the day when Son of Sam was around and when this serial killing was discovered in 2012 they were all freaking out that it was happening again. I know this isn’t closure and there’s a long road ahead but I hope that this brings the victims families and the community some hope and relief that this man is off the street and may have to face the consequences of his actions, allegedly.
This guys lawyer is really something else! So combative. Why hold a press conference if you keep saying you know nothing and just got into this? Come back when you have something to discuss 🙄
That defense attorney was doing his job, eager too do what a good defense attorney does, “innocent until proven guilty” the media ask ridiculous questions when the defense was just placed on this case ..
@@agapelove2853 So why have a press conference with literally nothing to say besides “I don’t know do you?” …rude and ridiculous. Typical Long Island trash attorney. I live here and know the type. The guy needed to take it down several notches.
You can believe, he didn't just start killing, or stop killing when they Gilgo victims were discovered. The missed red flags with him had grown Dinosaur wings, and had lights of bright blood red, with the words " I'm a serial killer, I own the Avalanche truck, Ogre w/a thing for 70's fashion" in bright blood red.
JB, it's not cool of you, in your position especially to repeat claims made that hasn't gained traction, and is most likely a Rabbit hole. Just because someone says something, doesn't mean it's factual, reliable, or worth repeating to anyone. You have a large audience, stay with reliable sources, facts, and leave the Rabbit holes for the rabbits. It's easy to get your head stuck in one.
Why did they put this lawyer in front of media if he hadn’t even seen the man yet? “I don’t know” is not a press conference.

I’m a Suffolk county Ny resident and have been following this case. I worked in Amityville Ny right around the time of these murders and it was horrific to hear about body after body back in 2010-2011! They caught someone who they are 95% sure is responsible for 4 murders! I’ve watched this video of yours and the briefings as to updates on the arrest! What I don’t understand is that these agencies, FBI, Suffolk county, state police etc , spend more time thanking each other aka circ and jerk rather than say that they will find the killer responsible for the other bodies! The demon is not even convicted yet and they are jerking each other off with huge thanks! Personally, cops and other forms of law enforcement are the most corrupt POS in every state! They break the law and are caught in the act more often by auditors and body cams than the people they bust! All they do in this case is take turns jerking each other off praising each other with what a great job everyone did.😂 It’s comical! I agree with you. Toooooo much thanks to too many people. But I have no idea how corrupt they are. Would be very interesting to know but I fear we will never find out. I am German and I have to say these boys over here are mainly sweet. They are not only friendly, most of them are empathetic and really try to help. Instant. But they are all frustrated because after all the work they do, the creativity they invest, the judges are terrible. They punish people because of a few dollars they forget to pay back (incometax) and rich people who steel millions sit in the carribeans. Raping? 2 years, after 1 year they are out. Murder? Depends, but usually not more than 4 to 8 years in reality. Bank robbery without harming anybody??? That is the worst. Because they take from the rich people.

The victim's families should NOT be made STANDING through these long press-conferences, let the brave and the fearless cops do the posturing, the CIVILIANS should not be required to follow the same decorum as the COPS!
Hey Pascal. Greetings from South Africa.
Don't forget ex Police Commissioner Burke and his DA friend whom is also Disgraced!
There definitely involved in some way
@@jakechristopher4953agreed. They’re super shady

The fact that they wanted to continue in silence, but they made up their mind after all the evidence they had already collected that he was such an imminent threat to the public they had to take him off the streets. That's a terrifying though. Not that naive to think a serial killer suddenly quit, unless the person is dead. But it still sent shivers down my spine. And that he looked up relatives, locations, etc. It's sickening. What a solid task force. An important lesson to learn - drop the ego and work as a team. Wink wink to other cold case investigators. Peace to all the victims. On another note. His family is victims too. Save the pitchforks. Listening to interviews with BTK's daughter is heartbreaking.
The scariest aspect of the story for me is the thought that there are untold numbers of similar people out there doing the same thing without law enforcement knowing who they are… this guy went under the radar for 10 years. F’ing insane to think…
Well the lawyer sure the hell knows how to handle doesn’t he
Any of his neighbors or work colleagues who saw that shack they were living in had to have known summat was up!?!
Good job to the team that identified this psychopath
I've never heard this much information given out at the very first press conference...
I hope the trial is live streamed when it does go to trial.
I also wondered if the Long Island killer & the eastbound strangler were the same ppl. They still haven’t solved that one yet & they were both around the same time frame if I remember correctly
I don’t think NY ever live streams trials. They are prohibited in most.
Serial killers are hard to catch just ask Anthony Hopkins
Zodiac killer still hasn't been caught
So did I hear that correctly? Amber Costello lured Rex in for sex, stole the money and threw him out?
I get tired of all the kudos for doing a job. I worked in a hospital and I didn’t notice all the doctors and nurses constantly thanking each other for doing what they are paid to do.
And that makes it right? Wouldn’t you appreciate getting some kudos when you do a outstanding job? Your industry needs improving. Police officers rarely get kudos. Let them have this without complaining or finding fault.
It’s also about acknowledging the work of multiple agencies which is not common in most industries.
I thought the same. I try to give them the benefit of the doubt; but…. It bugs me.
Is your glass half full…
That is bad how?
I have never been anything other than a housewife and grocery store worker. But, I do not like the way that they bring up the profession of the girls. They say they are not passing judgement. But, there are other situations where people put themselves in danger. Every time you enter a Lyft, every time you show a house and are alone with someone you don't know, going on public transportation after midnight because you work the late shift, entering an unfamiliar household you have been hired to clean, ect. People in these situations get murdered too, but their situation is brought up in passing, when they are murdered. I understand that people do not have any respect for people that do sex work, but I just think that as much time should be devoted to their profession, as to others that were also murdered that were not sex workers. Because, I don't care what you do for a living, if you were not victimizing other people, then you did not deserve to be murdered.
What made them find out about this creep in the first place? Were they onto him in 2010 when they found the first bodies?
I am from bangor maine! So glad they got a suspect, now the victims families can have closure.
I mean we don’t “have to” afford him the presumption of innocence. A court doesn’t, a jury does.
How can the suspect plead not guilty if he hasn't been interviewed yet with his attorney?
JB. Professional and awesome as usual. Blessings
Well done was watching the gilgo beach murders just yesterday!!!
It blows my mind to see comments of people who hadn't even heard of LISK before they caught him. If you would have asked me last week, what cases I hoped they would solve, this would have been number one, followed by the Springfield Three, that bowling alley massacre, that yogurt shop massacre, Maura Murray, Brianna Maitland, and Brandon Lawson cases, just off the top of my head. I've known about LISK since I first saw the episode of "Disappeared" about Shannan Gilbert when it first aired, and I watched "The Killing Season" a few times.
It would be cool if they could catch the Chillicothe serial killer too; that's much closer to a hometown case for me. I think there has been some recent disappearances in Middletown, too. I wonder if the Chillicothe one moved to Middletown.
I wonder if there really was only one killer in this case, because I remember in "The Killing Season" that they theorized there might be multiple. It looks like they've charged him with the ones where burlap was used; I wonder if they will charge him for the other ones too.
It still blows my mind that Shannons 911 call the cops didn't even respond to it. A girl called scared for her life and they ignored her. Cops didn't even get there till an hour later when a neighbor called the cops about seeing a girl running and screaming
@@Benji-jj2bg Yeah, I wonder if Rex was involved with that. It seems like the driver would have known what house she went to in the first place. It reminds me a lot of the disappearance and murder of Amber Tuccaro, just how we have the audio from her final phone call. It's really creepy.
@Benji-jj2bg Middletown Ohio?
I’m from Long Island and I regularly rollerblading along Ocean Parkway at the time my family did not want me to go there in fear that someone would come out of the brush area and grab me. That’s when I started rollerblading with 5 pound weights in my hands. That area is right on the pathway the bodies were found.
From Long Island. Never thought this day would happen
Wow great job enlightening and oh so interesting…. Good find
"Most of the victims had been sex workers"
I didn't realize this. Do any of you remember when that guy called into Howard Stern saying he would kill prostitutes, and he keeps getting away with it? This was longer ago than 10 years ago, but the caller didn't exactly sound like he was going to stop any time soon.
Interesting comment 🕵️♀️
My question is he stopped killing 13 yrs ago? Killed most likely 4 women then stopped? Nothing before nothing after? Ithink there's a whole lot more to this story, whether he's the one or not!
2010, a currupt task force impeded the investigation 😭
Dang! I cant believe I missed a HeyJB Live! I have my notification bell on too. Oh well, Im on rewatch and waiting to catch Peter Tragos' live coverage of this later tonight.
This case was prolonged bc of the corruption at that time
And yes, the DNA testing advanced, as it continuously does
I still believe that there’s more than one killer on Long Island, maybe from Queens, Brooklyn with ties to Long Island
I’m from LI and you would have to know the area to put the bodies there
And Manorville as well
Different MOs
And the boat theory is very possible, IMO
thank god they got him. Thank you for all those that did not give up.
This PC is fascinating! So much to dissect!
The weirdo pretty much had an cemetery he created. Doll's ? Burying them close together..This sounds like a Edgar poe,s writings 😮.what an interesting case, its past just murder 😳
Cop: Can you describe him?
Victim: He looks like a big Olaf. Like the dude on family guy named ‘Peter’
Cop: I love that show, who is your favorite character?
Victim: Peter
I always believed the old fired police chief who served time in federal prison had something to do with this...I guess not .
This is only for four of the 10 victims.
🙏 Thank you lord
All comments are giving scpd props - BURKE totally had something to do w this
if I anyone who realizes that they actually are pretending the case is cracked is forgetting several other brutal murders that were from Manorville to gilgo- James Burke dated an escort and would frequentlyleave his gun with her - case is NOT OVER
