Schloss Drachenburg (Dragon castle), Germany

Schloss Drachenburg is a private villa in romantic fairy tale palace style constructed in the late 19th century. It was completed in just two years (1882-84) by Baron Stephan von Sarter, a broker and banker. Schloss Drachenburg is built on the Drachenfels hill, overlooking the Rhine River at Königswinter, near the city of Bonn.
The name of the castle is coming from a German fairy tale. According to German folklore, Siegfried slayed a dragon just a little further up in the mountain.
The castle is named also "Neuschwanstein of the Rhine" and it is considered as a prime example of historicism, a 19th century trend that replicates various architectural styles to create idealized historical buildings.
Drachenburg castle is a spectacular building with collection of architectural styles, artistry and architectural excellence. Among many supposedly authentic exhibits, there are masterpieces by Velasquez, van Dyck and Titian. A grand wooden bed, which probably came from an auction, was said to be the "bed where Marie-Antoinette is believed to have slept." Original paintings in the Nibelungen Hall recreate the Norse saga featured in Richard Wagner's Ring Cycle.
