Same my apasara pencils lead was also broken the exact same and only 1 pencil was broken I think the make all of them they same way.
I also used only apsara drawing pencil.. And now iam going to try this charcoal pencil also

If you want to sketch a portrait you have to learn drawing and sketching. I you want a to make a coloured portrait you can learn to use colored pencil or you can learn painting.

My experience.
Paper should have a little roughness (tooth textures) for charcoal pigment to settle down. I made a portrait on smooth chart paper using camlin charcoal pencils and they wont even work on it. I somehow managed to shade on the paper but it looked like a dark shade graphite pencil (it maybe due to pencil too because camlin charcoal pencils are not pure charcoal pencils) and it didn't blend well. So if you want to go for a smooth paper then make sure it has a little roughness to it.

@@rvmind2802 mine worked on normal writing paper and hard chart paper but they don't work on normal chart paper. It was my first attempt to make a big portrait that's why i opt for chart paper instead of expensive art papers. But looks like either i have to change my paper or the pencils themselves.
