I LOVE this. I saw a live show with Jon English and Simon Gallaher (but the rest of the cast is different) and loved that to. I was raised on this version. I can't help but agree that Jon is fantastic. Toni is good, not great, but still good. Siman is great and I personally think that he is the best Frederic that there is. Jon is definatally the BEST PIRATE KING EVER!!!!!!!!!!! Ok finished ranting now. =)

Ah that's quite interesting. You see I'm a musical theatre and straight theatre actor (although I would like to try panto some day). In fact I have recently been cast as Frederic. The fourth wall is there for a reason. Jon breaks in constantly. The illusion must be kept to some degree - that's the magic of theatre. In panto (although you are clearly better informered there than I), the breaking of the wall is common if not necessary. Ah I'm about to go over character limit... :P
Can anyone post the song that comes after this? I can't find it! But it's one of my fave songs in the play. It's called "My eyes are fully open" with these 3 in it.
I realise it's not a ponto, it's just what I am used to. And you are right that Rex and Kevin have a strong on-stage chemistry. Panto is fun and I would like to try musical and straight theatre as well. Jon mainly followed the script and origionally the script had a little breaking of the forth wall and that's why they put it in this one (although more so in this). I do understand your point with Simon's voice. I personally don't mind but know that it can get annoying........ character limit =)
I agree to the "no aguement" thing but would like to say that: I personally think that breaking the forth wall is good. As I do pantomimes, I am used to it and like it being done. Also because of the panto's, I am used to people not being what they act as. E.g. wrong age, opposite gender ect... This is just my thoughts though and I respect your thoughts. If you have a dislike of these factors then that is fine with me..... Each to there own =)
@kirafaye I have listened again and can pick up a faint murmer, but it could be anything, why would Simon say 'Oh shit' at that point ? I guess we'll nver know the truth of it.
I'm not a fan of this ruth, I love their pirate king. But not sure about this song, it's allot slower then usual. Again LOVE this pirate king, second favorite, but the funniest for sure.
Last years panto had a girl like that. I totally understand your point in keeping the forth wall but there is also times when having it broken is good. In the origional script (we had to study it in drama class once) they broke it. They also tried to combine many aspects of acting including panto, musical, mime and surround sound meaning they tried to involve the audience while avoiding the forth wall. Just stating facts here. I'm not trying to sound mean or like I want to argue or anything =)

As for Simon... well, do you know when you just inexplicable dislike someone's voice even though they can clearly sing? Well that's what I have with him. They are both fine actors, I just believe that Rex and Kevin are in a league of their own and have an on-stage chemistry that these two cannot match!

Jon breaks the fourth wall far too often which leads to a disbelief that he is the character he is meant to be. I think Kevin Kline and Rex Smith are the ultimate duo.
