I've watched many a video on writing memoirs. This one spoke to me. I especially found value in the author's remarks regarding reading other memoirs. I, too chose not to do so, for the very same reason: I wanted to develop my own style and distinctive voice. I also knew if I saw other's grammatical choices I'd be tempted to use them.
One more issue which spoke directly to me: this sense of writing for the reader's sake. As I continue this writing adventure--now in the fourth year, I always keep in mind why I'm writing this memoir: to help others who happen to be in the place where I was prior to the proverbial "inciting incident." If but one person finds value from my words, I'll consider myself successful. I have decided to donate all proceeds to charity.
Writing a memoir is indeed a lot of work! More than that, it's cathartic yet oftentimes painful--dreadfully so. The book took shape like a puzzle's pieces finding their connections, and in the process ended up revealing a picture I'd overlooked having been too close to each piece. Get ready for many a sleepless night, and insights which come at the most inopportune moment--like when you're trying to sleep!
Only into the second year did I start using a voice recorder; what a blessing! Whoever invented it deserves a medal. No longer must I get out of bed, turn on the ugly lights and find a scrap of paper to scratch out enough to trigger recall the next morning.
I'm interested in learning more about the Self Publishing School.

My current work in progress is a creative nonfiction account of recovery from developmental trauma. I predominantly use conceptual & linguistic metaphors, not only to communicate the processes as a story through character arcs but also to avoid naming anyone involved. This is my story, not theirs. Their story is embodied in being complicit and compliant to the abuse, and my need to write the book in the first place.

I bought your book whiled I listened to this podcast, and I agree with Chandler - Do the audiobook and read it yourself! It will be so powerful. I almost exclusively "read" via audiobooks now - and they are so easy to share with others!

If you're watching the comments on here Lianne, go check out Mel Robbins story about her first book. It is crazy and has to do with her decision to make an audio book 👍🏼

As an up-and-coming memoirist, what advice would you give for creating the characters and not using their real names without permission to avoid a defamation or slander or libel lawsuit but not sugar coating anything? Good video.

I need to look into this again, but my understanding is that it can't be defamation if it is true

Great video. I’m not used to hearing people use the word “like” “it’s like” “just like” “like” “like.” she keeps saying “like” she also said very very… lots of unnecessary filler words.

@@selfpublishingTV It has to all be in one book I think. But I've had an event happen to me in the lottery which hasn't ever happened to anybody in the world before, so it has to be known about, and shown how it happened. There are many other elements about my life and story which does not sound true either, and it all connects into a totally bonkers story. My story is outrageous. Hoping for it to be made into a film, yes. Hopefully Richard Curtis will do it, because me and him appear to be 2 of the most connected to eachother ppl that exists in the world. That part of the story is totally nuts as well. This one thing that happened to connect us just isn't possible. The book is gonna be called 'You Won't Believe My Story' btw.

These people who are offering advice on a genre of literature display an appallingly low standard of spoken Engkish.together with a cripplingly limited vocabulary. Nearly all sentencs have springlings of 'like,' 'kinda like,' 'sorta' 'I mean,'' 'you know,' 'I'm like,' 'O mi god.' Its sorta like you know, kinda like you know, VERY POOR.
