Midwinter coastal foraging in Pembrokeshire in a gale with Craig Evans

  • This low spring tide unfortunately coincided with a cold strong north westerly wind of 25 knots gusting to 40-45 knots. I said I would publish 2 or 3 videos per month therefore I had to go out in this weather.
We forage for " scarlet elf cap " fungus in a wood near my home and found some lovely "Penny wort " and Sorrel in the hedgerow above the cliffs. As a flavouring I used "sea radish " found in a sandy area above cliffs. The wind was very off putting not just from a foraging perspective but it caused a swirling effect that caused great difficulty in maintaining sufficient heat from the stove. As is obvious the sound quality is poor ,despite extensive editing by Kris and wind suppressors on the microphone. In some cases we had to mute the sound as it was so loud. However ,the next day I went foraging on a nearby beach, the wind had by then had dropped, unfortunately Kris was not with me and I had only my mobile phone to film(just in case I came across something interesting) ,while turning over stones in a rock pool during this super low tide I caught only my second ever OCTOPUS, I will add this clip to a future video.

When I was a child, my father and I used to watch Malcolm Douglas cooking in the bush and off the coast of Australia on the TV. Your videos are like a Welsh version of that and I really enjoy watching them. Keep up the good work! Cheers

I found it very interesting to learn that scarlet Elf Cup was a wood eating fungus. Many of them around here are inedible or taste of wood.
I live in Texas and you may be surprised to know that it grows like wildfire over here. Originally from ornamental ponds, it grew into creeks and ponds like mad. Good to know that it may be edible. Depending on water quality of course.

I love and I realy missed this kind of adventure, I was doing this when Im young and living in our province near the sea, the thing I could do is catch diffirent kind of like that sea foods then I have boiling water then put ginger, and union, then followed the seafoods, then add tamarind fruit or powder to make sour the soup then when the seafood estimated cooked already I added vegetable leaves like sweet potato or kangkong to become more delicious..

Thank you again gavrfc09, I did some forging around Glenelg on the west coast of Scotland, while up there for a week about 14 years ago. The weather was great for the whole week .I can really recommend this area,it is stunningly beautiful and appears to be a pristine Atlantic Oak environment, with a really clean productive coast. We are really fortunate in the UK to have access to all this. Enjoy in the summer ,regards Craig.
