For those wondering what the deeper meaning of this song is, he’s talking about the city Pompeii, that was destroyed by a volcano. “The walls kept tumbling down in the city that we love” means that he was thinking of Pompeii walls crushing down due to the volcano. “But if you close your eyes” meaning he’s imagining a happier time, as the volcano erupts and he’s waiting for death. “I was left to my own devices” meaning that life in Pompeii was not very exciting, and everyone was left to their own things. “Great clouds roll over the hills bringing darkness from above” meaning the volcanic ash that cover Pompeii. The background during instrumental parts of the song, “Eh eheu eheu” is Latin. Meaning something like “The end is finally here” (I don’t remember what it means but it’s something close to this) With all this new information, you can truly enjoy the song and understand what’s happening.
