Thank you so much! My mom is a seamstress but i never learned to sew. During covid she came to see me and we found a wonderful Singer sewing machine (with the original sewing kit, with bobbins, dethreader, feet)at the goodwill for $20. I learned to make masks, and have taken in clothes. Attempted a quilt for grandaughter, etc. However, although my mom is a pro she never taught me this way of taking in pants. Makes me wonder if she knows how. Maybe ill show her something when she visits me again. She is 93. So God willing we have many more visits. Ty once again!
First timer here✋🏾and I must say your instructions were spot on! Managed to take in one side of my jeans. It took less than 10 mins to do. I used normal sewing thread but doubled it up and just took my time when pulling it all in. Thank you 👍🏾
exactly that's the issue when you lose weight which is why I needed this video and to do it easy. well done losing weight if that was your goal muah. KK
I'll admit it. I was never taught how to sew. I lost quite a bit of weight and my work pants are too big. I spend alot of money on my pants and don't want to spend more money for smaller sizes. You video has helped me out so much! Thank you from a guy that hates buying new pants!
You're very welcome!! 😊 Thank you for your nice feedback! Please, let me know how it goes for you. Also, I have few different sewing tutorials on taking in waist on jeans. They are sew along alterations - professionally done and more in depth. Here is a link to one of them if you'd like to check it out: ua-cam.com/video/tH0WH6QJdsM/v-deo.html Enjoy!
Omg that's so simple! I thought I was going to have to take them to a tailor and it would cost me a lot of money. thank you thank you! bless you lady -muah. KK
This was exactly what I needed! My 11-year-old is tall but skinny. I was able to buy him men's pants that fit him perfectly everywhere but the waist. They looked bunched up when belted but this made them fit perfectly! My first attempt failed. I broke the thread, even with the heavy embroidery thread. I think it was because of the super heavy denim they use in men's jeans. So, for the second try, I just cinched it up a few threads at a time until I got to the top. I did a pair of jeans and a pair of outdoorsy-type slacks. They both looked great. I wasn't sure on the second pair which had a pocket in the pocket if it would work, but I sewed right over it and it worked perfectly. Thank you for the tutorial!
Be proud of the fact that you have the power to make these alterations by yourself! And you did it awesomely 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🫶 Thank you for sharing your experience ☺️
Yes, I divide the 1 1/2 inch in half and take up on both sides to equal that amount. This way the jean alteration, after it's done will look nice, symmetrical and fit properly. That is the best practice when taking in waist on jeans at the side seams area. If you want to take in waist on jeans in one place only, than it's often best to take in at the center back. Hope this helps! 🙂
If the small side pocket is very close to the side seam or the amount of fabric that needs to be taken in is greater than the small space between the side seam and the small pocket, alternatively taking in waist on the side seams, is taking in waist at the back centre seam on each side of the double stitch with same stitch technique. Hope this helps! 🙂
Super helpful thank you, I want to do this as a permanent change to a few of my jeans so can I just cut the excess? It digs into my sides on the thicker pairs and can make it look a little lumpy, but I don’t know if that will risk the thread ripping through the hem?
This is a very good question🙂 Simply, I don't. Mainly because I use this method only when I'm in time squeeze and I need to temporarily and fast take in the waist on jeans, skirt, etc. I like to alter my clothes permanently and for that reason I would do a professional jeans take in waist alterations as you can see it in this in-depth video: ua-cam.com/video/tH0WH6QJdsM/v-deo.html
I guess I need to start with a tutorial on how to do the needle and thread. I do not understand how you only put a knot on one side of the thread and the needle pulls through without detaching from the thread if only one end is tied🤔
Sounds like you might benefit from my recently uploaded tutorial about this topic. It's about making a sewing starting knot and ending knot, plus I talk about the single and 2 string thread and the needle , hand sewing and stitching. Here is the link: ua-cam.com/video/dFecR4z5F3g/v-deo.html /Starting sewing knot for hand stitch - Sewing tips!
This is a great idea, but when I did it my pocket sticks out. What did I do wrong? Any help out there? 😊 Also what exact needle and size did you use? Thanks
Can you do the same thing around the thigh area of jeans? Is there a specific video on that? I have some jeans that I want to make tighter around the thigh area because I have really skinny thighs. The jeans I have fit me good but I want them to be tighter around the thighs… Any help would be much appreciated!
I would work around it - if possible - but that's me. Usually there are few factors to consider beforehand, for example: by how many inches you need to decrease the waist, are you taking the waist in temporarily or permanently. How thick is the fabric that you're working on. How much the inside bulk of the excess fabric bothers you after you take the pants waist in - things like that. As you see, it REALLY depends on each piece.Hope this helps 🙂
Hello, I tried the embroidery thread but it shredded and got tangled, please provide which brand of thread or how to prevent thread from tangled ? thx so much
Try to pull the thread as you sew instead of just pulling at the end. Alternatively you can try to use waxed dental floss for sewing. Also, waxing the embroidery floss helps to prevent the thread from tangling. Hope this helps🙂
That should work too 😊 If you want to watch my video tutorial how to adjust waist of jeans with an elastic here is the link; ua-cam.com/video/d1PQP4oWrD0/v-deo.html
You might want to try puling the thread few stitches at a time as you are sewing. Sometimes the fabric is too thick and it's hard to pull the thread closed in one try.
Are the jeans comfortable like this? I might try this, but I am concerned that the crimped part of the denim will be uncomfortable. Has anyone tried it?
I did it a few years ago and they were my favorite jeans! By far the most comfortable because of how well they fit me. I was only 13 at the time so I sadly grew out of them and I’m just now doing it again
I find very difficult to sew the upper part where the belt loops are, and when I try to pull the thread in the end it breaks anyway, and I am using embroidery thread. What am I doing wrong 😢 it is very difficult to sew this thicker part of the belt loops area 😭😭😭
Yes, it should. But keep in mind this sewing technique is suggested more for a temporary and easy-quick fix. If you're interested in more tailored look for your trousers, it's suggested to do the take in waist at the centre back of the trousers. The alteration does look complicated but with step by step tutorial, it can be done. It's suggested (in sewing) always try the garment on to see if it fits properly before you decide to cut any fabric off.
No. It's a quick fix (that usually lasts as long as you need it). If for any reason you need that extra inch back in your waistband, all you'd have to do is cut the thread and pull it out.
It is nice to see videos about hand sewing instead of machine sewing since not everyone has a machine

I did the same only my sewing needle snapped 😂
Thanks for getting into the instructions at once without any long intro. I’ve got plenty of embroidery thread. 👍👍
I value everybody's time! Thanks for your feedback ☺️☺️
1000000 percent thank you and ditto on the getting to it!

Great to hear! Thank you for your pleasant feedback.
Best tutorial so far for someone who doesn't have sewing machine
It actually worked ❤ and I was afraid since I don't know anything about sewing ...very useful video
Great 👍
Thank you for this tutorial. Your instructions are very clear and easy to follow!
You're welcome! I'm so glad you found it helpful.
This is the tailoring I needed on 2 pairs of jeans! Thank you.
Perfect!
Thank you so much for such an instructive lesson. and without a bunch of extra talk. you have really helped
Glad to hear that!
Tysm! This worked like a charm on my thrifted shorts
I'm happy you found the technique helpful!
What if your taking in a lot and the excess is uncomfortable?
Thank you for making this! I lost weight after baby and I’m so excited to do this to my skirts 🫶🏻
Congratulations on having a baby! Yes, this take in waist alteration is simple and easy to do. Let me know how it works for you. You got this!😊
do you divide the 1 1/2 inch in half and take up on both sides to equal that amount or do you do the whole 1 1/2 on just the one side.

The You! Super easy!
What about the side with the tiny pocket? There isnt as much room.
Exactly my question! Do we alter one side only and leave the side with small pocket?
If the small side pocket is very close to the side seam or the amount of fabric that needs to be taken in is greater than the small space between the side seam and the small pocket, alternatively taking in waist on the side seams, is taking in waist at the back centre seam on each side of the double stitch with same stitch technique. Hope this helps! 🙂
are you using all 6 strands of embroidery floss? thank you!
Yes, you got that right. I don't separate the strands. I find it to work better and last longer 🙂
Omgosh!!! What an amazing video!!! I've been searching for a tutorial like this!!! Thank you so much for doing this video!!!
thanks for sharing! I really wanted to take in my pants without going through all the work of taking off belt loops, waistband, etc
You bet! With this method, the alteration isn't permanent as with the one you mentioned.
Glad it worked for you!
Thank you for this video!

Do you do anything to "finish" the inside? is that chunk of fabric irritating to wear?

Yes you can! Some people find it easier to tighten the thread as they sew up the side seams.
