Found this video because of Vorst's steam review saying he had run this game for years and got it to GDQ just so he could tell the lead composer what a great job he did. The dedication is real.
100% true, just played through the definitive version on Steam for the first time and its like playing Half Life for the first time again, plus Xen looks incredible and is actually enjoyable
I played the original game way back and it took me months to finish... Seeing this run makes me me smile real big! I thought running thru fights was speed running back then lol! Thank you for this and keep up the great work guys!
That cursed light is the best thing, you can use it as a hoverboard and a plane as well as a launcher. Just sat on one map playing with that light. Very cool speedrun.
lines from this run "[we've got hostiles is where] we learn the government sent the military to clean up this thing and cleaning up involves cleaning us up as well" "questionable ethics is my favorite chapter to play casually, it has great music, a great atmosphere, cool ending, so just to make sure you all get the authentic experience we're gonna skip it entirely" "the military didn't actually dispose of us they just threw us in a trash compactor to die by walls but as we've noticed so far, walls are merely a suggestion" "- unfortunately this guy talks too long so, that's a c4 you put together the details [...] - that's what you get for drawing the short straw buddy - how unlucky. the things we do to save time😔 anyway" "we have long arms and, once again walls are merely a suggestion"
Too bad that most of the saves are for in-game time, not for real-time. Saving 5 seconds while QuickSave\QuickLoad for more than a minute is painful to watch :( Anyway, a huge fan of HL speedruns, great job guys!
@@MRKapcer13 For me it was good at first, and it is really good in terms of visual and sound design. But in terms of gameplay.. it becomes soo repeatable, you literally have to do the same thing at least three times in a row. Every puzzle in this level - you just do something, and then do this again two more times
Devs were trying to make a game that looks fit for 2020 on an engine from 2004. The maps here are just way bigger than a lot of hl2 stuff. Also it’s an older version. I believe definitive edition is slightly more optimized. ALSO doesn’t help that my computer was running particularly slow that day =/
This is source engine. An engine from 2004, built off goldsrc, from 1998, built off the quake engine from 1996. The maps still are the same format, bsp.
The run looks incredible. God I wish those loading times were multithreaded though, on mordern CPUs and NVMe SSDs you could shove a good 90% of those loading times... Hopefully the game can be updated to support multithreaded loadings one day...
No it couldn't be, this is just a source engine flaw and you'd need to change so much to get it to work you'd basically be making your own engine which is kinda hard for an indie team. Also, even if it somehow happened, we downpatch to 0.91 so we wouldn't have said change.
That was a save-delete. It's just slightly less obvious because the default position the game loads us in is without weapons and armor like every other save-delete in the run
I believe that's a "save deletion" trick, which they explain at some point. Basically, in this game (and others on the Source engine), if you make a save, then simultaneously load and delete that save, the game loads a default, developer-created save for that map instead, which puts you at the standard map start point and gives you the health/equipment which they expect you to have on that map at that point.
0.9 is an old version that didn't have the new UI yet iirc. You can use the old UI in definitive edition tho just by typing -oldgameui under Black Mesa>Properties>Launch Options on Steam I think

They completely redesigned Power Up and having that chapter actually flow better is like the most satisfying thing.

I'm very glad I could commentate on this run. Was a lot of fun, let's do it again sometimes!

The MC is phenomenal. Great voice and commentary, makes me happy 😁
Finally conquering the tower, only to fall right back into the hole, i can feel that on a spiritual level.
With BlackMesa this game finally looks like we thought it would look back in 1998. Love it.
Does anyone else watch these to relive the game without having to play all the way through it?
Gordon Freeman the magical psychic elevator repairman.
Suddenly got real there in the end. Well done Johann, great run.
I like that a category has to exist to actually play the game.
I love this run, brings me back to playing the original half life way back when. The nostalgia is real, with improved graphics!

sucks that half the run is literally sitting at loading screens LMAO

Great game. Must play again to the end part
I was so excited when the xen update come out and I was not disappointed.

I love this game
Amazing run
I need to continue playing this game. I dropped it for some reason
Absolutely. The stuff they did with Xen is really, really good.
It's great, Xen is the best part.

ahhh yes gordon fastman
That's alot of loading
not really
Lets go Vorst!
Freeman, what are you doing?!?
What is up with all these loadscreens. I feel like other engines have mostly figured out this problem.

The best Remake for Half-Life.
I sort of hope they do blue shift and opposing force too

We remember the freeman
what was that jump at 13:20 ? health also went from 43 to 95

Could exist a 2D Half Life metroidlike?
How is he playing with the old UI?

So broken, so fast.
