What’s going on with Japan’s pacifist constitution is that the US made it part of the surrender terms, as we didn’t think we could trust them with a military after WWII. Years later, Japan and the US are allies, and the US figures it can trust them with a military, as them not having one means America has to take up the slack, militarily. So even though pacifism is written down in their constitution, Japan not having a military was part of their deal with the US, and the US is completely fine with them breaking it. This causes the strange situation of Japan having a military but refusing to call it a military.

Japan never apologised for WWII. They altered school books about their part (like war crimes) in the war. US even installed class A war criminals as PM and government in order to prevent communism. Their descendents now run the government & they worship annually at a shrine for war criminals (imagined a shrine for Hilter in Germany where their PM visit annually!). So asian countries have misgivings about this given the horrendous atrocities committed during WWII.
Japan is still in occupation by US with around 100 bases there. They are trying to get full independence which is understandable. The problem is will they go straight back to being imperial Japan and not learn from the past (given real history has not been taught to generations of kids). Or will they allow themselves being use as proxy by US for fighting China.

I welcome our Japanese friends decision to once again become a potent military power. Playing dumb and sticking to their self proclaimed pacifism in the face of the ever growing threat and massive rearmament of China, would be like signing your death sentence. There's only one step Japan should never cross and that is developing nuclear weapons given that Japan is under a nuclear umbrella of the United States. Every other weapon system is welcomed and will probably be developed. Most important weapon systems Japan doesn't have but should buy or develop in great numbers are long range offensive ground attack missiles. Everything from the air launched to ground to sea launched. Japan has the ability and access to US missiles. From the high tech stealthy air launched JASSM to the venerable Tomahawk cruise missiles that fit perfectly in the Mark 41 VLS tubes aboard the Japanese destroyers. Very soon US Army will deploy the new ground launched hypersonic missile named the Dark Eagle. But given that this will be an extremely expensive missile Japan should probably buy soon to be deployed PrSm missile that will be able to be fired from the HIMARS trucks. With over 500 km range it would be a perfect system to knock out Chinese coastal targets as well as any naval vessel brave enough to sail close to Okinawa.

Another good show. One of the most tragic events in the Poet-WWII world was Truman abandoning Chiang and the Nationalists. His actions resulted in Communist takeover of China, and that led to the wars in Vietnam and Korea. Those issues still haunt us today. If anyone wants to learn more see my work Fatal Flaws Book 2 1945-1974.

As an American I find it really annoying. I'd love to see our defense spending fall by $100Billion and use that money to pay down our debt and fund important work here at home. We can afford to do both!
But on the other hand, you don't maintain a dozen carrier battle groups for free. And you don't have a black bag of tricks to pull things like stealth bombers out of if you don't keep investing every year. Even when it looks completely wasteful. I still think we could pull it off for less than $800B/year... but it's a balancing act.

@@rleslie66 lol. I actually don't have an issue with a jobs program. I just want it to be an EFFICIENT jobs program! I'd also like to see AmeriCorp beefed up considerably. Let's give our young adults a place to serve America that's not military, and can give them some skills training and, even more important, exposure to their peers from around the country!
One of the ways military service can benefit people is that no matter how provincial you are, or where you are from, you are forced to get along with and work alongside people you don't always agree with. It is one thing that can take some of the edge off our hyper-partisan country. It helped after WW II, and I think it would help again today.
