I did the same thing with my first try on starter! Tap water...omg it was the most awful smell... and i couldn't stop smelling it even after I threw it out! So awful! 😂
Oh, you need to do is stir the hooch back in add some organic, buttermilk and rye flour you’ll be fine but rather than story dinner in the fridge this discard method that’s not how they did it. For centuries, they threw a piece of the dough they beat back in the lower they dehydrated it so you can take your sourdough mix a bunch of flour in it, punch it down throw FLOWER on top of it and then when you go to cook with it again you take it out of the fridge throw some more buttermilk in it have buttermilk have water or you can just put a water in it and stir it up. Wait a day or two and it’ll be totally fine actually in 12 hours no more than 24 hours it should be.

I’ve heard the hooch can be stirred back in but it just looks so off-putting! One day I’ll be brave enough.
