I appreciate you for saying this. Maybe I should have included a "beginner alert" at the start so more advanced users wouldn't be so upset lol I'm try to give knowledge to all levels here. And hey even sometimes I need a reminder on these basic principles. Also as basic as these are, some of these I didn't figure out till a handful of years down the road, especially the combos and reggaeton rhythm.
Such videos are also helpful to experienced producers, cause sometimes we're just too much in our heads about how a bassline should be that we forget the basic stuff.
Yes, this is right. My approach here is make a sound as simple as possible, then add your own spice to it. This gives a basic foundation for you to build your own interesting and complex sounds. Without this foundation to start, you'll have a hard time getting the best sound you want to make, because you don't know where to start. For example; make a growl as simple as possible: grab a Vital synth, just frequency modulate the sine wave with brown noise, and just scroll the fm knob up and down, here's your super basic growl. After that, just do whatever you want to make it unique, feel free.
I'm from Russia and don't speak English. But I have to say...) I've seen "a million" videos about the creation of Drum and Bass. And only in your videos I get the necessary information. Videos in my native language are not clear to me, but yours are clear. I didn't watch everything. I would like to know more about the structure of the drum and bass mix. This is actually a great exercise for bass guitar players (like me) in any genre, great stuff to think about for getting out of a rut and spicing up your riffs.
I like the delay that starts on the 1.3 Long Note. Your favorite! The less is more with myself. I like simple one hitters not complex or too busy basses that take my ear away from the Drums.

Just wanted to say that these tutorials are ace, I'd have killed to have had this kind of info and teaching freely available when I was trying to find the difference between my arse and my elbow as a kid using sequencers for the first time... :) Really nicely explained and demonstrated too - gotta admit that messing about with 808 patterns (and completely chancing on stuff by simply moving notes back and forth until I find a vibe) is one of my favourite parts of making jungle/dnb tbh, so it's cool seeing you put that across so clearly and also that you're kind of encouraging people to not overthink it.... just kind of move bits around until your ears prick up innit :) Good stuff Alan, been meaning to check these for ages but I'm a bit rubbish. Another killer dnb production tutorial. Keep these tuts going! Sorry I'm like 2 years late on this video. There was a hodge podge of different uninformative tutorials when I started producing in like 2008, it was really a guessing game with dnb production back then. I rarely produce or take it seriously but when I have time to kill it's great to watch these, especially this particular tutorial. It's weird because I've used dotted 1/4 notes without realizingi it was a thing. But yeah I will def be using these examples to build off of.

@@linguineignota It's not that different, just lower slower and less distorted. TUrn off your sub osc in serum and just use 2 normal osc's, let them wobble with LFO automating your LP filter cutoff
With the one note pattern, my preference is on the first or the secound snare whene theres 4 snares in a loop, the second snare really mimics that hardness of etrap

This is great stuff. I'm a bass player. Used to rock/funk/disco/house/jazz. Tried to put together a DNB pattern I've hit a wall.. LOL. Requires different thinking.. This was def helpful.
The video is excellent as usual, I've come to expect great things from you! Pattern 4 is my favourite, but they all kici major ass. Many times we try and do complex stuff, which ain't bad obviously, but going back to the basic basslines is always a pleasure, like meeting an old friend you haven't seen in a long time!
This was so good! I've always been a little confused about how to make reese basslines so that the notes flow into each other and is less clunky and hard changes in notes, would you be able to go over it in a tutorial at some point? Also been using the Gnarly pack, soo worth my money!

maybe it's because i'm a bit more of a junglist, but i find that minor pentatonic riffs work really well for DnB
