Given your hatred of the original Disney version, you might actually like the original fairy tale a lot better, where (SPOILER ALERT) the mermaid has to choose between murdering the prince or herself. 😬
I think what people fail to understand about the original film, it's that Eric was not the main or the sole reason Ariel left , but just the catalyzes, she did not liked Atlantis , she felt out of place, she has tastes no one there has and she is different and the black sheep, I related a lot to that as a child, because she saw a chance of escaping and got it, which years later I did the same and left my forsaken home town , I guess as the only Gothic girl of the town in times where was not cool at all to be Goth I found in Ariel hopes of freedom
@@sophieamandaleitontoomey9343 also was the first Disney film where they worked as a couple and saved each other she saved Eric and Eric saved her and I think thats the closest to what real relationships are, to this day this its still a nice change bc it was either a damsel in distress or like nowadays she has to be independent and the guy useless ...
@@Lex77755 In defence of prince Phillip (from sleeping beauty) he also had a personality lol, but yeah Florian (who was 17-18 and not 31 (snow white)) and Prince Charming Cinderella actually were just there lol
I felt both films had that - for me - in a sense that Eric was the final push for Ariel to venture out. Personally, I love both versions of Ariel - Halle's and Jodi's are valid. I didn't mind Eric not being able to fight Ursula because, well, he's HUMAN and she's an otherworldly being. I loved how brave he was despite the fact he could have easily died, but he wanted to protect his true love. It made sense to me that Ariel would be able to stop her, especially since she failed due to her pathos. At the same time, I will always love the original with how both Ariel and Eric saved each other. But, like I mentioned in my comment, I totally respect everyone's point of view and love our ideas! :)
So I think adults hate the Scuttlebutt song, but at the showing I went to (it was a full theater with most of the attendees being children), the kids LOVED it. The random kids beside me and behind me were dancing in their seats, a few kids were bouncing in their seats. It was super cute and it was the song they definitely responded to the most.
@@DrawciaGleam02 Yes. :) And in "Moana" when Maui is like, "If you start singing, i'm gonna throw up" and Vanellope in "Ralph Breaks the Internet" when Ariel begins to sing under a random spotlight.
I loved the songs but I hated the movie as I knew it was soooooo wrong about the history like Hercules Hera being Hercules mum and Hades being Evil to Hercules was just sooooo wrong on so many levels.
I loved Pocahontas cause it was half my heritage, but then my family told me all the wrongdoings about it, and even though it has good music, it unfortunately now irks me. But when I was in my child joy bubble, I LOVED POCAHONTAS. 😊
Pocahontas movie was wonderful but because it's based on a real historical person there is so much controversy about accuracy. So many people are forced to hate on it.
The original little mermaid, just saying, she wanted to go to the human world long before she met Eric, as proven by her collection. She met him and fell in love, but King Triton destroying her collection was what pushed her to go to Úrsula for legs. She wanted to go on land way before, and again Úrsula used her crush (which if triton had just let her do her thing, she would’ve never gone on land because she would been infatuated but never seen him again. So technically the crush was the straw that broke the camels back.
I’ve been called racist so many times just because I have my many problems with this movie in terms of music, acting and what they changed from the original script. Changes that ultimately made the movie worse and missed the point of why they were there in the original. The four biggest sins for me are 1. Ariel having amnesia which completely ruins her agency and choices. I don’t care if they were stupid. We all know they were stupid but for the love of God can we stop pretending she had no agency in the original just because she gave up her legs for Eric? 2. Taking away Sebastian’s being a composer. Sebastian’s composing and song writing is the reason the plot happens. Because Ariel forgets to go the concert and not only makes her family look bad, but also Sebastian in turn. By taking away him being a composer not only do you make Meeting Ariel’s family boring as hell, but you also ruin what Sebastian brings to the table in helping Ariel. 3. Triton and Ariel’s relationship being cold and abrasive. It’s not like it couldn’t work but to make Triton one dimensional and boring is a mistake. In the original, Triton was not perfect. He clearly cared a lot but just didn’t know how to showcase it in a way that Ariel needed. But Ariel being a Daddy’s girl was the heart of the original movie. Most people incorrectly assume this is just a story of a girl giving everything for a man when it’s actually the story of a father and daughter learning to understand each other. Showing Triton as more than a gloomy Gus who lost his wife was one of the many reasons the original worked. It gave him more of a believable arc than just “I’m sad and now I’m no longer sad.” And finally, the complete ruining of Eric’s character. Yeah okay they give him more screentime and a collection of his own. Okay fine. Him having a collection is actually really cute. But other than that, you have robbed Eric of everything that made him such a unique take on the Disney prince. Too many people like to say Eric is boring and has no character. Need i remind you we meet Eric for the first time in the original on a ship in dressed down clothing while steering it. This was the first time in Disney’s canon we’d ever see a prince that wasn’t dressed up or proper. He was something new. Yeah he’s not the complicated character ever but he didn’t need to be either. He was kind, compassionate, brave and adventurous. Someone who didn’t fit into the prince title he had and as he himself admitted, really didn’t want to take the role seriously or be forced into anything romantic wise if he wasn’t feeling it. And on top of that, how can you not love a man who not only puts himself in the line of fire to save his dog but also braves storms to save his lady? And now in the remake you have a character that is NONE of what I just described other than maybe compassionate. Eric is completely neutered down for every single scene and isn’t even allowed to save Ariel at the end and she saves him in the dumbest and most pandering way possible. I love a girl saving the day but when you can smell the pandering and misuse of the moment, you roll your eyes. Not to mention it ruins Eric returning the favor of Ariel saving his life more than once. The live action remake may not be the worst of the remakes but I hate what it represents the most. Which is the arrogance of the filmmakers trying to act like they’ll do it better than the original and I hate it.
Sorry but the only valid point you made was the Triton/Ariel relationship- I do think Javier's acting was a bit dry. However, who cares about Sebastien's job? It literally changed nothing about the plot. As for Eric, I can't believe you just said that lol. They made him 100x better. He is way more compassionate, understanding and actually is interested in Ariel unlike cartoon Eric who was disgusted by her being a fish. The fleshed out his character year for the best
If you didn’t like the remake due to story elements or acting etc that doesn’t make you racist. If you started bashing the movie before it even came out solely due to the color of the actresses skin color, that makes you racist. Not saying that was the case, just explaining the distinction.
@@katkit1479 he wasn't disgusted by her being a mermaid. he was surprised and that's a normal first reaction unlike the unrealistic one in the live action. Man saw a mermaid first time in his life what do you expect? And then after that he immediately went to help her

Eric was shocked that mermaids were real because Grimsby brushed them off as just stories.... Once that shock wore off, he jumped directly into the danger to save her....
As a child, Princess and the Frog stole the cake for me. Tiana was goals, I had the biggest crush on Naveen(his human form at least) and I love how despite him being a prince, she didn't lean on him for money to fulfill her dreams and did it by herself. She only really needed his support and that's what he gave. They were couple goals for me, and I'm a sucker for Keith David's voice so that also helped bolster favouritism.
Tiana never met Naveen prior to meeting him as a frog, though. I think she saw what he looked like when his man servant was disguised as him; but it was Charlotte who was gaga for him, not her. She initially agreed to help him regain his humanity in exchange for him helping her out financially so she could start her dream business. She fell for him and agreed to marry him while they were still frogs.
@@amypetty5013 Neither am I - I'm pointing out that Tiana never crushed on Naveen's human form (her best friend Charlotte - who was obsessed with marrying a handsome prince - did) and Tiana only had interest in him (prior to being cursed herself) because he was a wealthy prince who agreed to help her out financially so she could start her dream business in exchanged for helping him break his curse with a kiss. Tiana and Naveen legitimately fell in love when they were both frogs (i.e. - neither of them were crushing on the others looks). And after regaining their human forms, he kept his word to her, paid off the realtors so Tiana could start her business and they both worked hard to get up and running (i.e. - she didn't become a success business woman on her own merit; Naveen happily helped her out).
They were what Megan and Harry were supposed to be, but they failed because they're too entitled. Apart from him being a prince and her having a black mom, they are nothing like those characters. Meghan and Harry are cringe. I love how Tiana and Naveen are together.
Disney movies never really traumatized me but LET ME TELL YOU how much Land Before Time and Little Foot's mom dying FUCKED ME UP. A lot. It fucked me up a lot.
I’ll see your Little Foot licking the rock wall shadow thinking it’s his dead mom, and raise you Artax slowly drowning to death in the Swamp of Sadness while Atreyu sobs and begs for him to not give up 😫
What I don't understand is why they used CGI for all of her hair scenes EXCEPT the one where she almost broke her neck flipping her wet hair 🤦🏼♀️ like, why didn't they just CGI that as well so she wouldn't hurt herself so badly?? 🤦🏼♀️
I liked both versions, but I do prefer the original; not because Ariel was white with red hair but because I think it was better written, characters were more likable, and it flowed better. I wasn’t looking forward to the remake but I was never upset about it and I didn’t have high expectations for it, but still walked out the theater enjoying it. Halle Bailey has a beautiful voice and when she sung “Part Of Your World”, everyone in my theater clapped and cheered at the end of the song. 😄 I’m surprised you liked that song “The Scuttlebutt”. That song sounded awful to me, made me cringe, and I personally feel is the worst one. I might be in a minority with this thought, but I do prefer Eric killing Ursula in the original than Ariel doing it in the remake. I liked both versions but I feel like it makes more sense for Eric to use the ship since he has experience using ships and Ariel didn’t. Plus I thought it was cool that Ariel saved his life earlier and then he returns the favor by killing Ursula in order to save her (though he kinda saved her twice by cutting Ursula with the harpoon/spear under the water), showing that he does genuinely care about Ariel and was willing to die to save her, considering that they hardly knew each other and she was crazy in love with him. Also, the ending of the remake shockingly made me cry, as I’m having issues with my parents and it just made me very emotional. But yeah I like both versions of the movie. Oh, and Sebastian is my favorite character and Flounder is a close 2nd. Sorry for the long response. 😊❤
@@brianaguilar8283 Especially when you consider that Ariel has zero nautical experience (I.e. - has never sailed before), has no legs to stand on (kinda crucial in order to steer a ship) and only spun the wheel in one direction before flopping on deck - it's damned near miraculous that the ship stayed on course while trapped in a whirlpool, no less. To add insult to injury, wen Triton is resurrected, he somehow knows Ariel is the one who saved the day and she has the audacity to say Eric helped (when all he did was scratch Ursula with a harpoon before getting tangled up in ropes).
@@madamefluffy4788 lol. How is it adding insult to injury? Eric's not stealing the credit, Ariel's *sharing* it with him of her own prerogative. And it's clear that she's doing it to try to make her father understand something about humans.
@@amypetty5013 It's insult to injury because the victory is all based on sheer dumb luck (more accurately - plot convenience so Ariel could have a girl boss moment). By no means should Ariel have successfully killed Ursula - considering she's never sailed before and is steering a ship that is caught in a whirlpool. And Triton has zero reason to believe she not only saved the day, but that Eric helped because he saw none of it happen. In the OG film, Eric (an experienced sailor) had to struggle to keep the ship on course while trapped in the whirlpool in order to take down Ursula (and Triton, who was alive during the fray, saw it all - so knows for a fact that Eric played a crucial part in putting an end to Ursula's tyranny). In the remake, Ariel - who has no sailing experience or legs to stand on - manages to somehow spin the helm in one direction and - without anyone keeping the ship on course - manages to kill Ursula (who for her part - saw the ship coming her way and did nothing to stop it) and Triton - who sees none of this because he was dead - just believes Ariel when she accepts the credit he gives her for the kill and claims Eric helped when he was barely part of the final battle - having only scratched Ursula with a harpoon before getting tangled up in ropes soon after). TL;DR - the OG ending made sense while the remake no sense, whatsoever. And no - it's not because it's a movie made for eight year olds (the OG film is also made for eight year olds); it's because the writing/script for the live action film was poorly written and was full of plot holes.
I would like to point out- the problems that said grown men have with the movie aren’t simply that they’re upset over a mermaid. It’s that the film makers are treating the public like idiots. What they’re saying is, “we cast her bed she was best for the role!” But then using representation and diversity as a selling point. When it comes to huge productions like that, the film makers have a pretty good idea who they want for the leading role right from the beginning. Any auditions are just a formality. Even if there were actual auditions, casting calls for leading roles have specific physical characteristics listed - so the chances that she auditioned and was just the best for the role are pretty slim. It seems pretty likely that they cast her as a shield, so that they could cry racism when people don’t like the film. “We’re too lazy and not creative enough to make an original film with all the diversity we want, so we’re gonna piggy back off of an already beloved movie. And since we have diversity and inclusion, we’re nice. And if you don’t like our movie, you’re mean and racist.” I also disagree with the argument that it’s allowed to suck because it’s made for kids. Disney renaissance films were fantastic for children and adults alike. It was objectively quality content. So, why can’t Disney make content that good again? I’ll also make the argument that sticking a black person in an incredibly famous role originally meant for a white person (yes, a white person. The story was written by a white man in the 19th century) is pretty condescending. “Yes, of course black people can be in movies! But creating stories for them based on their culture and lore is too much work. So here’s a role that a white person had first, and whose looks are iconic and jarring to change!” I would also argue that just because Ariel’s hair doesn’t match the real life “redheads” doesn’t mean she’s any less of a representation. Hell, redheads are more of a minority than pretty much anyone else (and I’m not saying that I necessarily like having a red headed Disney princess. Attractive natural redheads don’t exist. Halle is far more beautiful than any redhead could ever be). If it was simply being upset about the representation, by that logic, there should be outrage about Brandy playing Cinderella. Or Disney even making the Princess and the Frog. Or the diversity in Star Trek. There’s so much diversity everywhere that nobody has an issue with (granted, you could find a few weirdos that do, but I’m focusing on the rule, not the exception). So what exactly is it about this specific movie that has so many people upset? And I’m not saying this to invalidate your opinion of the film, everyone is entitled to their opinion. I just figured I’d clear up why exactly adults are upset about it.
Yep, I hate the "It's ok if it's crap, it's just as kids' movie." thing. As The Little Platoon says, "Children are too important to be left to shitty media."
Y’all are so racist like the character is a mermaid her race plays no part in the plot of the story also how dare you reduce Halles talent to they just wanted someone black as if she didn’t out song everyone who auditioned and even sounded better then the original in my opinion. Ariel's raceswap also didn't do anything for our plight of representation in media- it wasn't representation at all. We want new poc characters with unique experiences and stories, not cheap race-swaps. Also, you don't seem to understand the original Little Mermaid film- Ariel did not leave her family and the ocean for a man. Eric was just a bonus- URSULA was the one who made it all about a man. Ariel simply wanted to live on land and get away from her father's oppressive behavior. When she saw Eric, that was a bonus. That was not her reason for wanting to leave and eventually actually leaving the ocean.

@@pcrime2683 actually, the truth is that both versions have a kind of happy ending. It's always about loss and an unexpected chance of happiness. I love the original animated film. But I also have an emotional attachment to it as it was the gift my grandfather gave me after my biological mother abandoned me. I think people misunderstand the movie. She did not leave the ocean for Eric. She already wanted to leave. Eric was solely the final straw. The entire concept of giving up her voice, it speaks to the fact that adults try to silence their children. Ariel was already silenced by her father. So giving up what was already taken from her is a small thing. She had no voice in the ocean. So what difference would it make on land? And people failed to see that throughout the movie, Ariel and Eric saved each other. She saved him from drowning. He saved her from Ursula. Neither was weak. Both were heroic. In the live action, it pissed me off that they made Ariel save Eric in the end. Like, where did she learn to steer a ship?! Personally, I didn't like the live action. It has its cute parts, and I love Eric's songs. But it's not better than the original. And don't get me started on Melissa as Ursula. She was terrible
i feel this on such a deep level... As a redhead that grew up with these films, and was bullied for being a ginger, I really looked up to ginger characters. And the princess that was a "redhead" was ariel. People also always told me I was her and stuff, and I just never liked her, I prefered mulan and princesses like that. So it turned into a love hate relationship. Thankfully, many strong badass redheads in comics and fiona to identify with and teach me to embrace the ginger. I mean, at the end of the day, everyone gets bullied for different things, all stupid, people just decided to choose that, but as a kid that was my whole insecurity Then Brave /Merida came out, which literally looks like me, at age 24 I enjoyed it like I was still a kid. Far better character.
I wanna see the movie, I expect to hate it so bad that it makes me wanna rewatch the original lol. That's only because of the story changes I've heard about, and the fact that these live action movies take away all the magic that makes a fantasy movie, on top of Disney's blatant disrespect to a medium that MADE them as big as they are today. But I'm also looking forward to listening to the songs. It sounded like Halle was taking us to church In that trailer, I'm here for THAT!
Lmao just watch it. There's really not a lot changed. They added more so it makes more sense since the cartoon is incredibly short and Eric isn't charming in the original.
Hi Michelle! Nice video! I can understand why Ariel could get under your skin. I hardly can stand any character who acts too impulsively. One more thing: getting older surely helps in taking the parents' side in most movies 😅
I love Ariel! I grew with her as my Disney Princess. I really wanted to like the live action movie but I hated it lol. It was too different from the actual movie for me. It could have been its own movie imo.
I just can't get past the visuals. Idk what it is but CGI these days just looks very bad and fully takes me out of it. And although a lot of people are saying that the visuals aren't bland, but I still think the colors look super mutes in the underwater scenes.
@@spacedinosaur8733 That has nothing to do with my question, though. They claimed it was "too different" but it's objectively not that different at all.
I think the red hair bothered people because it's a recurring theme lately, of casting red-heads with black people. Another thing a lot of people didn't like was Ariel killing Ursula, since Eric doing it a) reinforced incompetent/useless guy trope that's been common lately, and more objectively b) helped Triton feel that humans weren't all so evil (plus, Eric saves her life, which is nice since she saved his at the beginning). A lot of people did hate the seagull song too, and the Kiss the Girl song. For the latter, specifically because they felt it was weirder since Ariel didn't need to kiss Eric for the spell, so it was just creepy. Haven't personally watched it, probably won't. Not a fan of live action remakes in general, I like my animation.
Moana’s the perfect opposite of the Little Mermaid. She longs to leave and explore, but loves her family enough to resist. But then when her family is in danger she knows exploring could save them and goes and SHE COMES BACK and THEN she reintroduces her family to their heritage and they all go back to explore.
They did Ursula dirty. She was suppose to have killer drag queen makeup and this is what they came up with. Original Ursula design was based on actuall drag queen and this is just ridiculously bad take...
I'm totally with you on the original. I couldn't stand it because Ariel was such a brat. I never saw the remake, and I figured that Halle Balle wouldn't be a bad actress, just that the storyboarders would be idiots. Which many reviewers have said was the case basically. She didn't do like the idiot who played Mulan and totally go in for her government enslaving and torturing people (she could have just kept quiet on it), she wasn't forced into a role that was totally unable to be filled by anyone else besides the original like Genie, I figured she would be fine. Just that the movie itself would still be something I'm not interested in, and seeing others' reviews on it still makes me feel that way. But anyone saying that Halle Balle needs to be canceled or that the Little Mermaid can't be black is an idiot. They're mermaids, they can be purple for all anyone cares.
The Scuttlebutt song is the most painful part of this movie. If you ever need to interrogate a terrorist, that song will make them crack faster than a water board.
I think the problem I have with there being two version is that ppl are gonna judge you for what version of Ariel you prefer based solely on what she looks like. Also I can imagine the drama there will at the parks if the "wrong" Ariel is spotted. I just don't like they have to compete. As you just know some *Beep*-er is gonna shame a kid for when they see a kid plaything with either version of the Ariel dolls. Also, I not been the hugest fan of them remaking so mutch stuff. The argument it's a kid movie doesn't hold water. Bc our entertainment is full of adult themes. The last few years alone the entertainment industry especially Disney have been trying to groom indoctrinate and sexualize children. There's nothing! wrong with men and women watching shows and movies we grew up on. Fyi the problem with race swapping characters is Hollywood isn't doing it bc they're the best person for the role. They're doing it so they can use black ppl as a shield against legit criticisms. Plus they want to be lazy and not do their job.

I think is too lazy from Disney .. and they will keep doing it for every movie because is easier for them to market their movie .. and they are have done it again with the Snow White movie when she is literally called snowwhite for her white skin colour like snow ..
There's a couple concepts in psychology- one basically about hindsight being 20/20 and the other about judging someone else's actions as a bystander from the outside... It's easy to be on the outside of a situation after it's played out and say "well, what that person did was stupid. I would never have done that." But none of us are perfect and we cannot always predict the repercussions of our actions. I'm very sure we have all made mistakes that in hindsight we understand we could have done differently. Her father never tried to empathize with her so she started alienating herself into her own little world, her grotto, where she could dream. I don't know what else to say but Ariel is my favorite ❤
For me, I still haven't seen it but I've watched numerous clips Now me, I come from loving the original I have multiple criticisms about the movie, and one of the main ones is not getting an actual drag queen or at the very least Queen Latifa to play Ursula. I did not agree with Melissa being cast I frankly think Halle may have a good voice, but I honestly don't like the way she sang anything in the film. I also felt a lot of her acting felt stiff and boring in the scenes I've watched The prince shouldn't have had a song, apparently his performance was really boring. Inserting the queen adoptive mom also was like so unnecessary. Everything they did with scuttle was wrong. Everything. They made Sebastian a fucking land crab. Land crabs literally can't swim. That was already enough to take me out the film. And the breed of bird scuttle was was not even native to the Caribbean. So like?? Also making scuttle suddenly able to be underwater fairly often kinda defeated the whole purpose and taboo of being friends with the character in the first place. As for the hair, she is already a mermaid, just make her hair the fiery red. That was the minimum people asked for, they couldn't even do that. I will view it once it's on Disney plus, but I've been very disappointed by all the Disney remakes lately. Only one or two were good at all. The rest have been dull and lifeless. They only make money after on the replay because parents turn it on on repeat for the kids. Young kids will watch anything, just look at Caillou. So I can't fault them for enjoying subpar stuff Disney keeps losing heaps of money over these things. They are starting to feel the pinch too. So they will learn very soon I'm glad you enjoyed it fren, but you know I already wasn't happy about it, they just kept giving me reasons to hate it more hahaha
Yeah agreed, Halle sucked and I'm sick of the race swapped only against white people, they're literally making Snow White a Mexican girl next! And of course they couldn't have a drag queen be the villain, the villain is the one they keep white, and made Ariel rescue Eric at the end cuz she's a strong Wahmen who don't need no man 🙄 I'm so glad Disney is losing all this money. At least the Snow White discourse should start a race war and be entertaining 😂
I don't watch the live action remakes just since they seem lazy. I also sometimes agree with the "Disney is too woke" stuff because I feel like they sometimes are doing corporate tokenism rather than actually including minorities as characters or actors because they actually respect the person's identity and are instead just trying to make as much money as possible off of people. That being said, it really doesn't seem like that was the case with this movie. From what I've heard, it sounded like the casting director legitimately thought she was the best person who auditioned. I feel like this is in direct contrast with the way other people handle diversity (like Biden committing to nominating only Black women as VP/supreme court -- idk why he couldn't have just nominated Jackson without saying anything like this rather than make it sound like she was only considered because she fell within this narrow group of qualified individuals, but that's just my take).
The first time i ever heard white people fight for black people to have more “original representation” was when it came to the new mermaid remake. No time before that have white people complained about black people playing your token best friend in literally hundreds of movies for years and years and years. No time before now have i heard a white person care if we got our own princess. We went decades without a black princess and none of you ever cared. Your fake concern is so obvious. You just dont want a black girl to be the little mermaid. Yall aint never ever cared about us having original representation. And when we did have it with princess tiana, you didnt go see the movie. Please stop. Be racist and proud, stop concern trolling
I never liked the original movie either. I tried so hard to watch it growing up & didn't care for it, & if I had to watch it for whatever reason I would always fall asleep or get bored. 😂
Lol idk but I liked the movie since I was 3 years old. I understand your criticism about her but I always respond with she’s a teenager her behavior is the epitome of teen thinking they know what’s love and not caring about consequences. Have you seen the prequel or sequel?
I love the Original movie, it is my favourite Disney and she’s my favourite Princess! And the fact it and she are your least makes me sad! But I still love you both! 🧜🏻♀️❤
Your opening about hating the little mermaid was the exact reason I've always hated the little mermaid. When I was 16 and read the little sea maid by Hans Christian Anderson, I hated the movie even more. Ariel is the OPPOSITE of the selfless heroine from HCA
I think it depends on what you consider selfish? Ariel does exactly the same as in the original with the exception that the prince does fall in love with her, she is rewarded by having determination and following her dreams her only mistake in trusting ursula which we cant even say its entirely her fault since she was pushed to it by an abusive parent, thus ariel didnt need to learn a lesson but triton, should be noted that when she tought eric loved vanessa she didnt try to stop it until she found out he was hypnothized so she was equally selfless as her original as she was willing to just die. Tlm by HCA has clear religious themes that I as a non believer dont really understand and find it toxic, the idea that mermaids are a race that is inherently souless and they need to earn it is nonsensical to me, tlm could have just died by refusing to kill the prince and then inmediatly go to heaven cause that proves her goodness.
@@jayla3282 the difference between book and movie isn't just that the prince falls in love with the mermaid, the mermaid's bargain also doesn't affect either kingdom (I.e. - the sea witch isn't looking for revenge/to rule over land and sea), the mermaid accepts the fact she will die and doesn't take the opportunity to save herself when an out is given to her (in the OG story, her sisters cut off their hair and exchange their locks for a dagger which, if used to kill the prince and his blood drips on the mermaid's feet, would spare her life and turn her back into a mermaid). The mermaid chooses to accept death rather than kill the prince she fell in love with and by sacrificing herself instead, earns the opportunity to gain a soul of her own.
@@madamefluffy4788 to be fair, ariel didnt agree to anything regarding the kingdom and she had no idea that was ursula's plan, she only acceptes to be her prisoner/slave
I mean, they're different stories. Disney changed so much from the Andersen tale that they're not really comparable. Ariel in Disney is not SUPPOSED to be the same character - as the nameless mermaid in the original story.
The original little mermaid is an amazing movie. I literally don't understand why people hate on it so much while singing the praises if the remake, when the remake was so bad and pointless.
When I was a kid the little mermaid made me sad, like it was literally so depressing for me to watch. She left her entire family to become a human, and the part at the end where her father said how much he was going to miss her, I would cry. Then their marriage boat floating away with the mermaids waving goodbye, I just couldn’t handle it as a kid, it was too sad.
Funny you mentioned that you hated the seagull from the original movie. The voice actor for it, Buddy Hackett had a reputation of being a very nasty SOB in real life.
He was one of the early Big Name Performers in Atlantic City when casinos came in. Mom and my aunt went to one of his shows, and they hated it. Foul mouthed, rude, and he was abusive to one of the women in one of the front tables.
I hated the original little mermaid. The best part about it was ursula. I did like the original story where she dies because she's supposed to be a cautionary tale. She isn't supposed to be empowering because she was selfish and short sighted. It's literally why she gets killed off in the original tale
Ursula is my second favorite villain, right after Hades…though they lyrics to under the sea were wild 😅😅😅 I can’t believe they got a ways with so many sexual innuendos 😅💀
Hahah oh I am -so- glad you said that about Prince Eric's song. I felt exactly the same way! I also went in with lower expectations but found myself -really- liking it! And like you, I loved Halle in the role. I think I expected that they were going to make her edgier to fit the more modern aesthetic but, to my delight, they left her spirited and awkward at times. It's so endearing! Great review.
I never took it as Ariel really loved him because she was just so infatuated with him as a person. She liked he solely because he was a person. She glorifies being a human and living on land, she wanted to escape the ocean because the ocean is literally her dads, that’s his roof she is living under and she wants to get out and the only way to do that is to get out of the ocean. After her took his anger out on all her stuff because it’s more acceptable to destroy your daughters entire collection than to hit her, I was over him. I don’t really care what he does later in that movie, she ran away from home because of her dad. She got married to get away from her dad. Pretty common thing to happen back then especially
You are wrong, the little mermaid did not give up her voice for a man she Gave up her voice to be up where her treasure of things from the human world come from to wanted to go up there and experience something new. She sings about a whole new world she sings about She wants to go where the people are. Sorry I forgot the songs. It's not about a boy, it's about the adventure that she wanted to go and have even before she knew about the prince.
i wasn't a huge fan of the new one; boy, I was snickering when prince eric started to sing, but halles voice was so amazing, so beautiful, it made it worth it seeing in the theater. I also cried at the end, when all the merpeople came up in support of Ariel, because I have childhood trauma and not much support myself. I feel so envious of people with large supportive families.
I just have such non-interest in the live action remakes. I like the original because I like the animation. The story is good too, and I'm annoyed they thought certain parts had to be changed, when those parts don't seem wrong to me. But I've only heard about the changes, I haven't seen them. I didn't really understand Ariel when I was a kid, but I did think she was mature and responsible. lol. Because compared to little me, she had her shit together and knew what she was doing.
The only thing I didn’t like is the same thing I don’t like in moves made after Shrek is that they used celebrities voices instead of professional voice actors. Also in general it’s just lazy to remake movies when they could try a new story.
I would love to see you do an analysis of Aladdin. I got so excited when it was coming out. I thought I would be able to share my culture with my friends in a movie. It was not that. I was also really excited to have a princess that looked like me. Most of the time Arabic people are only shown as terrorists or the women are hypersexualized and used as temptation. But even as a child I was so disturbed by the fact that Jasmine uses her body and makes out with Jafar to distract him so Aladdin could get the lamp. Like what the hell even is that? And he calls her pussy cat! Then as an adult when I learned that the producer kept telling the animators to make Jasmine sexier...... why? Disney did us so dirty in that one.
You would love Hans Christian Andersen's version then. Cuz the little mermaid ends up dying (turning into seafoam because she has no soul) and the prince marries someone else. He never payed her any attention. It was kinda part of Andersen's "This is why love sucks" Mentality. Tbf Ariel was my fav Disney princess as a kid. But it had nothing to do with her romance. It's because I could relate to her as someone who didn't fell like they belong. Growing up in a country that does not match with the culture you were raised it. My mother is a foreigner and her culture basically clashes with my dad's culture. She moved to his country after they got married but never was able to fully adapt and find hapiness there and those sentiments and feelings ended up carying over to her children. I'm currently not living in my place of birth, I don't miss it either. The only reason I used to visit in the past was because of our family dog who passed away last year. AS for my opnion on Disney, I stopped watched Disney movies ages ago. and I am not planning to watch any new ones. Live action remakes to me feel lazy. Instead of trying to recycle already existing stuff they can try and come up with new stories and characters instead. The only live action movie I watched was cinderella and that wasn't even on purpose cuz I had no idea it was Disney's live action cinderella. I just saw it as a movie where I wanted to bash the MC's head soo much because she annoyed me and then I removed the experience from my memory. Until my cousin visited me and she started to talk about Disney remake movies and the Cinderella movie... I wish I could rewipe it from my memory.
I really liked the live action, and I didn’t really have high expectations. Tbh, I said the same thing your boyfriend said “I hope I don’t fall asleep” ( they’ve made the movie theater entirely to comfortable, the chairs are like beds 😭) To show my age, I remember my mom taking me to see the original in theaters. I always liked it because of the songs, and I liked Ariel as a kid, but when I rewatched it as an adult with my kids my opinion of her leaned more towards yours, lol. I think Halle did great, her voice is just top tier, and imo they gave Eric more of a personality than in the original (though I also hated his song). It was a cute movie that was pretty close to the original with its own flair, and my daughter and niece liked it a lot and thought Halle was a beautiful princess.
I was obsessed with The Little Mermaid when I was a little girl. I loved the idea someone loved her because she could sing. However I know if Tangled had come out then, it aouldve been my favorite because Rapunzel is my favorite fairy tale.
I feel you. Every time kids did dumb things in movies when I was a kid and teenager, I would be asking my parents "why are these kids so dumb and rebellious?" Then my parents would laugh and I didn't get it.
I finally watched this since it just came out on Disney plus, so i can finally give you my opinion. I am a red headed white lady who loved this movie as a kid. I have a 3 year old girl and a 6 year old boy (both have red hair to for the record). We alllllll loved the live action more than the cartoon. Ariel was so much more relatable, and the world/mermaid aesthetic was perfect. The only criticisms are a) Ursula's makeup needed to be blended. It was way too distracting, b) they left out the "Les Poisson" song with the chef/Sebastian in the kitchen and c) the eels (flotsam/jetsam) didnt talk. We were also bored/cringe at Eric's song. Otherwise, me and my kids preferred the new version.
I think both movies have their faults however the Remake is just a pale version of the original but that's how most Disney remakes are I wasn't a fan of the race swapping but that wasn't my main problem I had with the remake my main problem was that they butchered so much of what the original story had, and the writers of the show said that this one was more nuanced, and that the point in the remake was that she wanted to be on land for a reason that wasn't because of Prince Eric, when that's how it was in the original. I also had a problem with this video and I'm not here to bash you or disrespect you, I just have a few disagreements with you, for starters Ariel's whole reason to be human was not because of Prince Eric the reason why she wanted to be on land was to be part of the human world something that her father did not give to her, it was her fascination with humans that drove her to sign the contract, when she had no one else to turn to, hence why she turned to Ursula. I also think that your defensive Sebastian is a little bit exaggerated, it's not like she dragged him along this journey, he knew exactly what he was getting into, I am aware that he was sent by her father to protect her, but he could have easily stayed in the ocean around the kingdom and he would have been safe. While I agree it was a little selfish of her to go on land that was kind of the point, however why should she stay in the ocean for the rest of her life and continue to be miserable? Her father could have opened up his mind and eventually let her on land and gave her what she wanted rather than keep her trapped. Also the whole thing with Eric and getting with that other girl is that both in the remake and the og, he was hypnotized so he was totally under Ursula's control at that point, and I think that's what a lot of people aren't getting. Also that book isn't canon, in fact Ursula in this particular animated movie isn't Triton's sister, I think that book was meant to sort of victimize the villains, so that we can feel bad for them. I don't intend to change your opinion on Ariel, I can see why you don't like her, but I'm just trying to express my disagreements with you.
This is just a guess (I haven't seen the live action movie and I don't think I will) but I once read that the 1989 version of Ariel and her six sisters were each to represent one of the legendary seven seas, with Ariel ofc being a manifestation of The Red Sea. So if you take this into consideration it makes 'sense' that her sisters in the live action movie has different ethnical backgrounds, they are technically royal representations of different seas from all over the world.
I am guilty of loving the cartoon. I love all the original cartoons more then any of the live actions, it’s like “the book is alway better then the movie”, because you already know what is going to happen so if they don’t do as good of a job or better it’s just disappointing! With this one, I was actually more worried about how they were going to do the under water scenes so that it didn’t look super fake and I thought it could have been better honestly! I loved the Caribbean theme to it! I prince eric was blah, the addition of the mother was great to the story( I don’t remember parents in the cartoon!!) I love Melissa MacCarthy so I was super excited for her to be Ursula but it just didn’t do it for me. Then the left out the kitchen scene with Sebastian and the chef. That has always been one of my favorite scenes. Now to Ariel, I thought she did a good job, I actually think it would have been better if she put her own flair to it rather then being so close to the cartoon. Like in Aladdin I was really concerned with the genie character because Robin Williams is just one of a kind, but Will Smith was great! He stuck close enough to it but made it his own so it didn’t just feel like he was copying. So I wish she would have added something. That being said she did as good as you would expect, I always thought people were ridiculous for getting so mad she was black, like you are fighting over a mythical creature for god sake!! But honestly that change add nothing nor took anything away from the character which I really think that is what they were going for. So over all I liked it but I love the music of the cartoon so much more. It just had a more fun feel. Just my thoughts!!!
@@sophieamandaleitontoomey9343 I don’t lol I just fell like every one now days hates everything from the past so I said it tongue in cheek. I love little mermaid it was one of my all time favorites!
I didn’t like the original little mermaid much either when I was a kid, but I always loved Ursula. I think Melissa Mcarthy is so fun to watch; however I wish Ursula’s role had gone to a Drag Queen, or at least someone with stronger vocals. I did end up liking a lot of the story changes, I feel like the live action filled in a lot of story gaps.
Yeah. I can see where you're coming from with Classic Ariel. And I do see the potential for Remake Ariel. But I discovered a problem... I learned about the Art book and the hidden facts about the remake's lore. Basically it states, Remake Ariel is not just a princess that's sitting pretty and having a lot of free time like the classic. Remake Ariel is ALREADY a ruler of one of the seven seas. She's basically a queen of her own place. And the starting scene, the Coral moon festival, was a general meeting between rulers. and she missed it... for the fork and stuff. Missing a concert is fine. All she had to do was sing to a crowd. She was entertainment. The Coral moon festival? It's basically like a mayor(Ariel) skipping out to tell the president(Triton) about her territory's current crisis and issues to... play golf. And the sad thing is, their idea COULD work. And it DID work for a Japanese film called Nausicaa Valley of the wind. (a film a few yealr older than the classic Disney mermaid) Where the princess, Nausicaa, balanced her hobbies, Exploring and studying the Toxic Forests filled with giant bugs, with her taking care of her people. Because her dad is sick by said poison from the forest. Even used her hobby to try and find a way to better people's lives. By breeding plants that wont give out poison AND develop them into medicine. Remake Ariel could have been THAT. And she would have been AMAZING. So I was basically sad to learn that they turn Ariel from a clearly spoiled, selfish child. That triton scolds but never actually punished, until the Grotto scene. Who gave her family- along with Sebastian and several royal guards, Anxiety for three days. To a Selfish young adult who had a HUGE responsibility, ruling an entire Sea (probably filled with thousands of merfolk) and just up and abandoned her people to have adventure and learn about an entirely different species.
My parents said for the first 4yrs of my life I loved The Little Mermaid (singing with it mostly) but then better films like The Lion King, Pocahontas, Beauty and The Beast and Aladdin came out then I stopped watching it 😂
Ariel is the Carrie Bradshaw (from SATC) of the Disney Princesses - it’s all about her, she’s fixated on a guy she barely knows - for all she knew he could’ve had the personality of Gaston from Beauty and the Beast 😂 never liked her and thought she was the princess who represented complete honeymoon fever, where she would probably end up sewing her own legs back together in an attempt to become a mermaid once more once she realised that Eric was a creep who probably flirted with anything in a dress
I grew up watching The Little Mermaid. As a kid, I drove my mother nuts with it. I think we had to replace the VHS tape two different times because I watched it so much I wore them out XD Kudos to Mom for putting up with that. I loved it because Ariel was a mermaid and I absolutely loved mermaids as a kid and they were so hard to find in media. As an adult, I kind of agree with your critique of the cartoon. I get that there were other reasons that made Ariel want to leave but the movie does really make it seem like it's just around Finding A Pretty Man. Which... Definitely not a good idea and not the message I'd want my kids (if I had any) taking from it. Also... I find it really creepy that a movie is basically siding with a hormonal sixteen year old's actions. Her running away from home and getting involved with a random guy is played as a GOOD THING and that skeeves me out. I would have loved to see the movie delve more into a father working to understand his daughter and mending that relationship between them that's clearly misunderstood/unhealthy power dynamic. I do want to watch the remake at some point, I've noticed it getting so much hate from people who haven't even seen it or weirdly, yeah, from older guys who liked the narrative of a teenage girl running away from home to be with a guy? Dunno how to feel about that so much but Disney had a lot to work with given the source material. I'm interested to see what they did differently, what they didn't and if the overall feeling of this movie hits different.
The thing missing for me in the movie: they could have used a Jamaican voice actor. Sabastian was giving nothing. If he were Jamaican he would have added a lot to the movie. The fake accent wasn't necessary since a real Jamaican accent sounds Jamaican enough.
My favorite has always been Cinderella who also gets a lot of hate. But I think people need to rewatch the movie. She's an incredibly strong person who maintains her good nature in the face of all of the abuse she has to endure. In her darkest moment her fairy godmother grants her wish for one good night and that's all she thinks she's going to get. Also the prince is only able to find her because she kept the other glass slipper after her step mother broke the other one. Cinderella wasn't rescued by anyone, she got out of her bad life because she held onto hope.
I'm so glad you did this review of both! I wasn't a huge fan of the cartoon either and so wasn't keen to see the live action (although I'm always trying to support my sisters!). BUT now I am looking forward to seeing it so I can form my own opinion on it. Thanks Michelle!! *Glad you didn't forget about this channel too lol...I watch the other two channels religiously whenever you upload. Great content Girl! 🙌🖤
I discovered the "dog magnet" principle when I was sitting in a hotel lobby with my beautiful border collie next to me. I got approached so many times by women just because of him and they ended up sitting next to me asking everything about me. I didn't have to raise a finger! I wish I knew this when I was in my twenties.
The Little Mermaid has always been one of my favorites, mostly cuz mermaids are cool. As I get older, I like Ursula more and more. I might watch it eventually, but all the live action remakes I've seen so far I havent really liked much, so it takes me a while to get around to watching them. Ive seen TLM a few times as a play/musical and I liked those, its just something about the movies (although Alice wasnt bad)
Disney fan: Do you like Halle Bailey playin Ariel? Normal person A: Yes Normal person B: No Disney fan to person A: Saint/es, light being, your opinion counts, love your open mind. Disney fan to person B: Devil's son, dark being, your opinion don't count, racist.
THANK YOU! Thank you so much for validating my own irrational hatred for Ariel as a character :'D. It took me years to understand why I didn't like her and it made me so mad how everybody was so quick to love and defend her from valid criticism, but it is as you said! She's selfish, period! She never once thought of how her actions had consequences for others and kept on pushing and pushing rules that were there for her safety. Now, I'm not saying that Triton is that great of a father either, but let's not pretend that the whole shitshow didn't start with a temper tantrum. I know she's just 16 and that kids in Disney movies have been putting themselves in stupid danger since times immemorial, but more often than not the danger matched the stakes! Literally every other Disney princess does her transgressive stuff in a proportional way to her struggles, often in life or death situations. Ariel went and made a pact with someone she KNEW was dangerous, who laid out glaringly predatory conditions for the contract and I Have Had It with ppl going all "oh, but it was her love for humans and not a man" NO. The literal final push for Ariel to sign was You'll Have Your Man!! She asked what about her family and she only needed to be reminded of the dude she saw once to give in AAHHHHHH It's like defending a kid that always loved idk, Iceland. Loved its history, culture, ppl and always wanted to go. Then one day she has a nasty fight with her dad, and she decides the best course of action is to get a drug dealer to buy her a ticket to Iceland with nothing but the clothes she's wearing, no money, no phone, not even speaking the language, just hoping she'll be able to find that one Icelandic dude she said hi to through DMs once. Idc what arguments ppl have for liking such nonsense, but for me she's a spoiled brat that took things WAY out of porpotions and got rewarded in the end after putting everybody who cared about her at risk. There are much better inspirational stories about following your dreams out there. Sorry for the rant, I got excited at finally finding someone who GETS IT ;u;
OMG! Someone else in the world thinks that Ariel is the worst Disney Princess and has felt that way since childhood? (T-T) I thought I was the only one...
Ursula also wasn't Ariels Aunt in the original cartoon. Once again you're applying the live actions changes to the original instead of treating them like individual movies and only going by the information given in their respective versions.
I'm still going to watch it for nostalgia, but my expectations are low, lol. I'm totally down for diversity in movies, but Disney is being super lazy about it. They're just slapping a new race on Ariel. If they're trying to make a statement, which is what they keep claiming, then the black mermaid doesn't need Ariel's hand-me-downs. What she needs is a good writer. That's it. But Disney is putting the least amount of effort possible into creating diversity in their films. When I was a kid, nobody cared that Brandy played Cinderella, the prince was Asian, and Whitney Houston was the fairy godmother in Cinderella. The writing was good. I never heard a complaint. I'd totally be down for a black little mermaid, as long as she had her own story and Disney did her justice. Lol, I only get mad about bad writing messing up my childhood favorites. Either be true to the original, or turn it upside down completely like Maleficent. This halfway business is just a lazy cash grab, where Disney is pleasing neither fans of the original nor people who want to see something new.
Wait... did i miss something? I don't think Ursula was her auntie, she used to be just a member of the court till banished. Correct me if I'm wrong tho?
I believe it was the Broadway play that made Triton and Ursula siblings, I haven't seen the new film but I believe they are siblings in the remake. Original never mentions the connection
For me it’s just can we just get our own princess instead of just race swapping (I feel like it was to meet a quota, just my opinion). Because let’s be honest if it was swapped the other way, the outrage would be REAL. I want some new princesses, new stories. Shoot live action princess and the frog. But I’m glad she got her shot. I do wish they would’ve given her, her own story because she deserves it, made her a brand new princess, she does have a beautiful angelic voice that I enjoy.
*All* the remakes are soulless cash grabs. The sooner people stop supporting them, the sooner Disney gets back to supporting original works. The last remake I watched was Mulan bc I dredged up the last of my blind optimism and… it was a legit travesty what they did with that movie.

PLEASE tell me you are going to review Flaming Hot!! I mean you are Miss Flaming Hot Cheeto herself!!🔥🔥🔥
Given your hatred of the original Disney version, you might actually like the original fairy tale a lot better, where (SPOILER ALERT) the mermaid has to choose between murdering the prince or herself. 😬
I be honest were are better liitle mermaid anderson versions
I loved die traurige Nixe and die kleine Meerjungfrau
I think what people fail to understand about the original film, it's that Eric was not the main or the sole reason Ariel left , but just the catalyzes, she did not liked Atlantis , she felt out of place, she has tastes no one there has and she is different and the black sheep, I related a lot to that as a child, because she saw a chance of escaping and got it, which years later I did the same and left my forsaken home town , I guess as the only Gothic girl of the town in times where was not cool at all to be Goth I found in Ariel hopes of freedom
And the people who say Ariel has no autonomy in the original are insane.
@@nightwishladyAlso Erik have an actual personality, other than he is a prince
The Scuttlebutt song made me feel like one of those modern Disney characters who are like, "You don't have to sing. You can just talk."
Exactly. The Scuttlebutt song was the worst part of the movie IMO
Is that from Enchanted??
So I think adults hate the Scuttlebutt song, but at the showing I went to (it was a full theater with most of the attendees being children), the kids LOVED it. The random kids beside me and behind me were dancing in their seats, a few kids were bouncing in their seats. It was super cute and it was the song they definitely responded to the most.
@@DrawciaGleam02 Yes. :) And in "Moana" when Maui is like, "If you start singing, i'm gonna throw up" and Vanellope in "Ralph Breaks the Internet" when Ariel begins to sing under a random spotlight.
As a child I remember thinking that Pocahontas was far more superior to little mermaid. Better songs. But gotta admit, unfortunate souls hits 😃
I loved the songs but I hated the movie as I knew it was soooooo wrong about the history like Hercules Hera being Hercules mum and Hades being Evil to Hercules was just sooooo wrong on so many levels.
@@zoegoodfellow1988yeah but the original source material is very messed up too.
@@Lukkaboc Agreed.
Yeah. The reason why King Triton destroyed Ariel's collection was because Ariel's mother died by a boat.
Which is the arrogance of the filmmakers trying to act like they’ll do it better than the original and I hate it.
well honestly eric and ariel both saved their own lives.

@@madamefluffy4788 I mean, nobody's arguing that she DID meet him before that point.
Princess and the frog is perfect, the songs, the couple, even the villain hahaha

What I don't understand is why they used CGI for all of her hair scenes EXCEPT the one where she almost broke her neck flipping her wet hair 🤦🏼♀️ like, why didn't they just CGI that as well so she wouldn't hurt herself so badly?? 🤦🏼♀️
Yeah
I liked both versions, but I do prefer the original; not because Ariel was white with red hair but because I think it was better written, characters were more likable, and it flowed better. I wasn’t looking forward to the remake but I was never upset about it and I didn’t have high expectations for it, but still walked out the theater enjoying it. Halle Bailey has a beautiful voice and when she sung “Part Of Your World”, everyone in my theater clapped and cheered at the end of the song. 😄
I’m surprised you liked that song “The Scuttlebutt”.
You’re not in the minority. Ariel killing Ursula instead is a stupid change
The point of Eric killing Ursula was that Ariel once saved his life, now Eric save her life. Fair and square.
And if you don’t like our movie, you’re mean and racist.”
I also disagree with the argument that it’s allowed to suck because it’s made for kids.
So here’s a role that a white person had first, and whose looks are iconic and jarring to change!”
I would also argue that just because Ariel’s hair doesn’t match the real life “redheads” doesn’t mean she’s any less of a representation.
Yep, so true
Couldn't have said it better. ~Your neighborhood redhead

I grew up mostly with the Hans Christian Andersen original, so the Disney one was weird with its happy ending.
I had to lie to my niece when she watched a version with the original ending. She was 6 and came out of the frontroom crying because the mermaid died. I said "oh no, the Disney version is the real one" 😅 she is an adult now and still laughs that her Auntie fibbed about Disney
@@pcrime2683 actually, the truth is that both versions have a kind of happy ending. It's always about loss and an unexpected chance of happiness. Andersen's mermaid didn't die, she was changed into a "daughter of the air"; and there are meanwhile also more "child-friendly" versions of the original ending. In the original, the mermaid is rewarded with the chance to get a soul , and in the Disney movie it's Triton's gift that the mermaid Ariel can become human and (marry the prince.....) (;

I mean, at the end of the day, everyone gets bullied for different things, all stupid, people just decided to choose that, but as a kid that was my whole insecurity
Then Brave /Merida came out, which literally looks like me, at age 24 I enjoyed it like I was still a kid. Far better character.
Merida is hands down my favorite Disney princess!
No, a dolphin babysitter would be a bad idea. Them mammals are hornier than bonobos, without the social compassion you find in higher order primates.
The songs are way worse in the remake in my opinion.

What was really different?
....But it's literally not different. It's the same freaking movie. How could it have been its own thing?

I'm mixed on the Little Mermaid. The songs are bangers (
They did Ursula dirty.

I frankly think Halle may have a good voice, but I honestly don't like the way she sang anything in the film. I also felt a lot of her acting felt stiff and boring in the scenes I've watched
The prince shouldn't have had a song, apparently his performance was really boring.
So I can't fault them for enjoying subpar stuff
Disney keeps losing heaps of money over these things. They are starting to feel the pinch too. So they will learn very soon
I'm glad you enjoyed it fren, but you know I already wasn't happy about it, they just kept giving me reasons to hate it more hahaha
Also, the Ursula being her aunt was a slap in for the live action. She was just power hungry in the original movie
How do you have all that to say but your first sentence was you have never seen it 😂😂😂
@@gbriataylor2554 because I literally said I got all this from clips
Did you read the rest of just wanna get mad?
Yeah agreed, Halle sucked and I'm sick of the race swapped only against white people, they're literally making Snow White a Mexican girl next! And of course they couldn't have a drag queen be the villain, the villain is the one they keep white, and made Ariel rescue Eric at the end cuz she's a strong Wahmen who don't need no man 🙄 I'm so glad Disney is losing all this money. At least the Snow White discourse should start a race war and be entertaining 😂
@@gypsylee333 what money is Disney losing? 🤣🤣🤣y’all are so funny
I like the original little mermaid that didn't get the guy and turned into sea foam at the end.
Tbh it’s kinda poetic
I never liked the original movie either. I tried so hard to watch it growing up & didn't care for it, & if I had to watch it for whatever reason I would always fall asleep or get bored. 😂
Lol idk but I liked the movie since I was 3 years old. I understand your criticism about her but I always respond with she’s a teenager her behavior is the epitome of teen thinking they know what’s love and not caring about consequences. Have you seen the prequel or sequel?
EXACTLY
She’s a TEEN
My biggest critique is they took out the chef trying to cook Sebastian. 😢 I know it wasn't important to the story but I always loved that part lol.
Lol and I'm glad they did because that scene would have a much darker tone with a realistic crab actually in fear for his life 😬
@@betternews3835 😂 true!!!
I never understood why King Triton didn't appoint one of her 6 sisters to watch her, instead of tiny lil Sebastian
I hated the original little mermaid. The best part about it was ursula. I did like the original story where she dies because she's supposed to be a cautionary tale. She isn't supposed to be empowering because she was selfish and short sighted. It's literally why she gets killed off in the original tale
As a singer, Halle was not qualified and i felt like i say a major motion college theater performance
She was. She was just boring.
@@BSA997 i agree you and myself
You werent a huge fan of the new one but your cried? Do you normally cry during films?
I’d say Bambi and Dumbo made me the most emotionally unstable 😅
Arielle's initial wish was to be a part of the human world not to fall in love.
Queen Latifah should have been cast as Ursula. She'd have knocked it out of the park.
I was obsessed with The Little Mermaid when I was a little girl. I loved the idea someone loved her because she could sing.
However I know if Tangled had come out then, it aouldve been my favorite because Rapunzel is my favorite fairy tale.
The main major reason I didn't see the live action Little Mermaid is because Queen Latifah wasn't cast as Ursula. I'm so heated about that.
Actually movies that have characters that die in them can help children with the concept of death. And help them be more adjusted to the concept.
I feel you. Every time kids did dumb things in movies when I was a kid and teenager, I would be asking my parents "why are these kids so dumb and rebellious?" Then my parents would laugh and I didn't get it.
The Little Mermaid was one of my all-time favorite childhood movies.😊
The Scuttlebutt song made me feel like one of those modern Disney characters who are like "You don't have to sing you can just talk"
The live action was pretty similar to the cartoon. I liked it, but it did start to feel a little bit long towards the end.
I agree with this! I had the same feeling and near the end I was like…soooooo lol hurry up
I finally watched this since it just came out on Disney plus, so i can finally give you my opinion.
I don’t see why you have to be guilty of loving the cartoon. It’s a good movie.
@@sophieamandaleitontoomey9343 I don’t lol I just fell like every one now days hates everything from the past so I said it tongue in cheek. I love little mermaid it was one of my all time favorites!
that wasn't Prince Eric's fault Ursela put a spell on him with Ariel's voice hypnotizing him
I didn’t like the original little mermaid much either when I was a kid, but I always loved Ursula.
My parents said for the first 4yrs of my life I loved The Little Mermaid (singing with it mostly) but then better films like The Lion King, Pocahontas, Beauty and The Beast and Aladdin came out then I stopped watching it 😂
This is the real tea. Those are better movies but TLM brought Disney out of a financial drought lol
@@Lill2895 yes that is a good point!
I love both little mermaid but always the original will be better in my book. Fav character is Ariel of course lol
How has no-one commented on how Ariels very wide set eyes make her look more fish like? Makes for an other worldly siren appeal.🤗

Normal person A: Yes
Normal person B: No
Disney fan to person A: Saint/es, light being, your opinion counts, love your open mind.
Disney fan to person B: Devil's son, dark being, your opinion don't count, racist.
THANK YOU!
Thank you so much for validating my own irrational hatred for Ariel as a character :'D. It took me years to understand why I didn't like her and it made me so mad how everybody was so quick to love and defend her from valid criticism, but it is as you said! She's selfish, period! She never once thought of how her actions had consequences for others and kept on pushing and pushing rules that were there for her safety.
Now, I'm not saying that Triton is that great of a father either, but let's not pretend that the whole shitshow didn't start with a temper tantrum. I know she's just 16 and that kids in Disney movies have been putting themselves in stupid danger since times immemorial, but more often than not the danger matched the stakes! Literally every other Disney princess does her transgressive stuff in a proportional way to her struggles, often in life or death situations. Ariel went and made a pact with someone she KNEW was dangerous, who laid out glaringly predatory conditions for the contract and I Have Had It with ppl going all "oh, but it was her love for humans and not a man" NO. The literal final push for Ariel to sign was You'll Have Your Man!! She asked what about her family and she only needed to be reminded of the dude she saw once to give in AAHHHHHH
It's like defending a kid that always loved idk, Iceland. Loved its history, culture, ppl and always wanted to go. Then one day she has a nasty fight with her dad, and she decides the best course of action is to get a drug dealer to buy her a ticket to Iceland with nothing but the clothes she's wearing, no money, no phone, not even speaking the language, just hoping she'll be able to find that one Icelandic dude she said hi to through DMs once.
Idc what arguments ppl have for liking such nonsense, but for me she's a spoiled brat that took things WAY out of porpotions and got rewarded in the end after putting everybody who cared about her at risk. There are much better inspirational stories about following your dreams out there.
Sorry for the rant, I got excited at finally finding someone who GETS IT ;u;
She's mixing up the storylines in the old cartoon and the new live action lol
I believe it was the Broadway play that made Triton and Ursula siblings, I haven't seen the new film but I believe they are siblings in the remake. Original never mentions the connection
@@indigocrayon520Broadway iirc just brought back a deleted song from the original, Broadway didn't make up the idea that they were siblings.
They're originally supposed to be siblings. The animated film changed a lot of how the story should be
Thanks for clearing that up for me... thought I was on a trip lol 😅
Michelle tryna get her conservative viewership back with this title 😂😂
Lol 😂 I have a mixed viewership it seems
*All* the remakes are soulless cash grabs. The sooner people stop supporting them, the sooner Disney gets back to supporting original works. The last remake I watched was Mulan bc I dredged up the last of my blind optimism and… it was a legit travesty what they did with that movie.
