As a young black male, I initially had reservations regarding 80s rock for a couple of reasons: one, there were so great R&B songs during that era. Two: MTV didn’t play many R&B songs in the early 80s, which rubbed me the wrong way. But as the 80s moved, I found myself playing Journey songs in my car as well as this song, Pat Benetar, Howard Jones, Madonna…and the list kept growing. She had, what I call, the intense singing voice. If I could have had a music wish, back then, it would have been to see Joan and Billy Idol do a duet. He also had that type of intense singing voice. I think it would have been a battle of the voices.
