- Learn how to make vibrant & bold red frosting for cakes, cupcakes, and cookies. Red frosting can be difficult to make since red is a primary color and you cannot add a color to make a more vibrant shade of red. There are numerous ways to make red frosting, like adding beetroot powder or adding a very small amount of black food gel food coloring, but my favorite ways to make red frosting is making the red frosting in advance and letting it sit for around 1-2 days and microwaving the frosting and refrigerating the frosting to bring back to a good consistency. I highly recommend using gel food coloring compared to liquid food coloring, especially if you are microwaving the frosting, since gel food coloring is more concentrated than liquid food coloring and microwaving liquid food coloring may cause the color to separate. Americolor gel food coloring is my favorite gel food coloring since you do not need to use many drops of gel food coloring to make vibrant bold colors and it does not make the frosting taste bitter. Red frosting is great for decorating baked goods for the holiday season and perfect for Valentine's Day desserts.
Directions
Add 4 drops of red gel food coloring to 1 cup of white frosting and mix together. You can then let the frosting sit for around 1-2 days at room temperature or microwave the frosting in 10 second intervals until the frosting is mostly melted. Refrigerate the frosting for a few hours until the frosting reaches a good consistency.

That’s so neat that the color changes so much with either time or heat. I wouldn’t have known that I would’ve just used the frosting right after I added the coloring gel. Thanks for this video, Kate!! 😀❤️

Woww i had accidentally found this method really works....but i was scared to use d buttercream as it was out for a day at room temperature 😃
Yes, buttercream can be left out at room temperature for up to two days, but will definitely last longer in the fridge 😊
Very nice
Hi dear, can u please show how to make Plum colour Buttercream, copper orange buttercream.. kind request ❤❤ lots of love Cassie from Goa India ❤

@@Bake_That You're welcome
Awesome 👌
Thank you!
Beautiful ❤️
Thank you!
Teşekkürler bu bilgi için 👍👍
I couldn't help but laugh when you put the gel in, it looked like a sad face on the frosting lol.
You are the first person to notice it! We noticed too and got a laugh editing the video 🤣
Does it sit out at room temperature?
Yes, it can. The frosting will deepen in color as it sits.
Can you do the melt & solidify method with a shortening icing?
Hey! Great question! I am not sure and have not tried it. Shortening is 100% vegetable oil and has a higher melting point than butter, so it would definitely take longer to melt than a frosting made with butter. It may also change the consistency and taste of the frosting as well once it cools. If you try it, please let me know how it works out!
I LIKE IT
Thank you!
Does your tend to get grainy? Mine seemed very grainy after heating and then refrigerating it after
Yes, I have had the frosting get grainy too. I use a hand or stand mixer if time allows, and it usually whips it up to a nice consistency!
@@Bake_That thank you so much! I will try that next time
You're welcome! I hope it turns out well!
Thx
So happy you enjoyed this video!
Help! I made my frosting 2 days ago, but I refrigerated it and now it's LIGHTER. Can I still fix it?
Hey Kelsey! What kind of food coloring did you use to color the frosting? What kind of frosting is it?
@@Bake_That Wilton gel, buttercream.
@@Bake_That will it darken if I leave it out?
@kelseybrands6960 I am not that experienced with Wilton gel food coloring, so I am not exactly sure how their gel dyes work with buttercream.
I would let the buttercream sit out for a few hours on the counter to see if the red color comes back, if not you could try taking one spoonful and microwaving it in 5 sec intervals and see if that helps to bring out the red color you had achieved before. Microwaving butercream is not my favorite method, but I know it can quickly help revive colored buttercream. You could also add 1 or 2 more drops of food coloring into the buttercream to help darken it. I know adding too much gel food coloring can sometimes change the taste and consistency of buttercream, though. I hope the counter method works to bring back the red color you had! Keep me updated 😊
@@Bake_That As I remixed it, it was turning lighter pink, but everytime I left it alone, it got darker. I'm thinking it will be fine, especially after it sits on the cake til tomorrow. Thank you so much for replying. I will let you know how it goes!
mine is just pink
What brand of food gel or coloring are you using?
@@Bake_That Its called Dr.Oetker but i assume that wouldnt be so good its like very runny liquid. But it wouldnt work with the more solid one either it just turns pink no matter how much i use
Oh, okay. How long have you let the frosting sit? Red is difficult to make, and time is really key to getting a vibrant red shade. You could try adding more food coloring, but it could change the consistency or taste of the frosting.
@@Bake_That It was trcknically a day i made it in the middle of the night and used it at night the next day. I was thinking so too if i add a lot of coloring the frosting will turn liquidizh and if i add more sugar flour it will turn back to pink you know
