Did You Know? - The History of Louis Riel

- Often referred to as the Father of Manitoba, Louis Riel, the leader of the Métis people of the Canadian Prairies, sought to preserve Métis rights and culture during a turbulent time in Canadian history. Puneet Birgi explores the life and times of one of the most controversial figures from our country's past.
I like how even though this was filmed in 2013, it has strong early 2000s vibes. Good ol' low budget Canadian media. If it works it works.

Interesting Canadian history. I'm a American living in Oklahoma and I find Canadian history fascinating. Louis Riel kind reminds me of John Brown, the abolitionist who, in a way, help start the American Civil War.
No connection dude.
A comparison can definitely be made, but the vast difference is that Brown was a White man fighting for the human rights of Black people, whereas Riel was fighting for the human rights of his own people.
My 4th great grandfather served with Louis riel in the metis council in the red river settlement. You can see him seated second to his left in the group photo in the beginning.
Louis Riel is my great great uncle through marriage. He married my great great aunt Marguerite Belhumeur, who had three children which were my cousins. Thank you so much for your comment, much appreciated and as a Metis person I will give The First Nations 2 thumbs up because your people have built a strong foundation for your people but as a culture such as ours, meaning both cultures that have been in oppression for so long our journey continues. We need to concentrate on working on change within our leaders now and the people we serve. We really need to pull together more.

Hmm, this sounds interesting! Those who thought he was a madman probably didn’t think twice about him as a person/human being. I’m gonna listen to this history.
It is a nice overview in the short time allotted for this presentation. The actual facts are scattered out there, but the history books still do not have it completely right. The fascinating details include his signing of the porchbook at House of Commons although a wanted man. Largely ignored fact is that 1884-5 started as a farmers' protest of both whites including my family and metis in NWT over lack of transportation that narrowed down to an ill planned uprising. It did bring the railroad to the west, albeit not for the settlers, but for Eastern Canada to gain control.
Take John A. McDouchebag off the $10 bill and put Riel on there. I'd be a very proud Canadian if that ever happened.

One of our first Canadian heroes. ♾
This guy is a hero
He is a hero that slowed down Canada expansion westward, and potentially could had make united states lot bigger, they would just take Alberta and British Columbia.
Thaanks to Riel we could have had American neighbours in the west, loosing all the oil wealth that today help the economy.
Do you really think that Americans would spend time listen to metis and natives?
Loui Riel is the precursor of those crazy environmentalists and natives who block vital Canadian economic projects, like recently the pipelines of Alberta
@@paultremblay4836 Ah but Riel's rebellion could be seen as a positive for Canada since it showed the importance of the Canadian National railroad of getting people and supplies to where they are needed.
Hell prior to the rebellion the railway was running out of funding and support and the death of such a railway project could have lead to some...horrifying results for Canada.

Story is missing a lot of facts about Louis Riel. He is a Metis hero.
CDN Hero!
He tried to change our tyranny of the majority political system.
Canada has no equal senate no vision for the nation.
Canada only has a vision for the on/qu population Mob Rule Tyranny of the Majority.
Hope Springs eternal in a democracy (vote) unfortunately for the minority population provinces with no equality, it is eternally hopeless.
Colonialism by population is what canada is.
When ON/QU has 66% of the population it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy of city states.
These truths we hold as self evident for all humananity.
Unfortunately canada is still a class based political system and doesn't hold these truths as self evident.
Hereditary chiefs is the believe that your mother had a magical womb and you are somehow better than other humans just because of the supports and circumstances the elites were raised in.
Confusing to me. 2:45 - if he negotiated an agreement with Ottawa to have the Red River settlement join Confederation, why was he worried for his safety, and why did Ottawa send troops to take control?
Seems like we're missing something here. So he had to leave after successful negotiations?
What really pisses me off about Riel is that while Manitoba does not have a statutory holiday for Remembrance Day, they have a Louis Riel day. What a world.
@Frank B. The real Canadians are those who are born in Canada, regardless of ethnicity. Riel deserved to die in the way he did and deserves no less than to be shamed.

Some of my anchestord emmigrated to canada and america and i have recently discovered documents in relation to louis Reil dated from this time amoung letters etc sent home fom america to Ireland in the late 1800's. I do not know what the connection to louis reil was but feel you may be interested
I'm not sure how you justify exonerating him when he was publicly, obviously, and unashamedly guilty of treason. It would be perfectly justified to pardon him on the grounds that he rebelled for a good cause, but exonerating him would just be a lie.
Is there a factual source you could provide please? I would like to research that opinion. Thank you.
He took up arms against the Canadian government up killed a man when the government tried to restore order. I feel like it stands for itself.
The take over of Rupert's land wasn't done legally by the government. According to international law the provisional Manitoban government was legal. No treaty was signed ceding Metis lands.

My ancestor Eli Guardipee knew him in Montana. He was like a warrior going back to Manitoba to fight for Metis rights. Many blessings for his descendants.
Time to fight again my freinds
My brothers, it has been so long.
Yeah, watching this today with my status holding wife, in a time when blm, systemic racism are issues, yet my kids will not be guaranteed any status, si their history will be erased over time. That's what they were fighting for. For a page un the book if Canadian history, and for what? To give it away, with hollow condolences, and Bill's designed to quash dissidents. Everyone here watching for school would do good to realize what the red river rebellion was about. We live under a crown of what? Why still? We need to abolish the crown in this country, it's not theirs, and never was. Has and will be forever Ours! I honour all those who have come before me to shed blood for virtue, and freedoms. Our current govt had zero ethics, zero trust, moral accountability! None. I'm angry, but forced to work, as a slave almost, to dole over 50% of my income to the crown.

Well done, Puneet Birgi.
You forgot to add the part where he executed a man
I learnt about Louis riel in high school. he was quite a leader in his day
How do you reverse a conviction of a person who was executed over 130 years ago.
Yup, I heard it: Save our country from a wicked government. So, they tried to create their own government setup. Way to go Louis Reil! 👍
Wow ! What a story ...
Long Live Riel!!! Long Live the Prairies!!! So shall we always be canadien!

@@GregoryJByrne what, you must be some sorta idiot.
At the time this happened he was deemed a traitor period and rebelled against the government and suffered the consequences which he fully understood. Again these were different times which people nowadays just seem to grasp. My great grand parents immigrated from the Ukraine and homesteaders northeast of vegreville alberta, my mother told me that if she spoke Ukrainian in school she was beaten, you don't here of Ukrainian people howling about it, whining and crying about things from long ago cannot be cowtowed to in these days, enough of this trying to make things right and changing history or canceling it.
Yes normal people are sick of the victimhood and complaining. These people are professional whiners with their hand out for some government monies.
Page 4
Twice---in 1870 and 1885---Louis Riel (1844-85) led rebellions in the western territories.
Riel's execution in 1885 for treason cost Macdonald the support of many French Canadians, who thought Riel was fighting for French Canadian rights.
To all the "great grandchildren of louis riel", he never had grandchildren lol he has many nieces and nephews, but both of his children died before starting their own families
I knew it!
Could someone please explain the whole story of the red river rebellion? I have a project due and i do not understand a thing.

Retired Shitposter I love your post it had me falling out of my seat.😂🤣😂🤣😂lol.
I am shocked there is no discussion of the Orangemen's agitation that led to the Metis' conviction and hanging of Thomas Scott during the Red River Resistance (1870). This execution would plague Riel for the rest of his life despite that he did not himself convict Scott. In fact, according to Howard Adams, Riel only gave testimony and advocated for a more lenient sentencing of Scott. Riel would go on to be denied a seat in the House of Commons despite his fair election (he did not simply "leave" as the video states, but the House held a vote to prevent him from attaining his seat), and later was himself hanged for unjust murder charges in connection with the execution of Thomas Scott. It's disappointing that this short film with 250000 views contains misleading facts and omissions.
why are you even on this video if you know everything about it lmao
This is bad history.

What could be a research question about Louis Riel?
The execution of Thomas Scott, really was his downfall. It just gave English Ontario (who were controlling things at the time, especially English media) the impetus to go after him. The English / French tension has always been there to this day. Riel also broke the HBC monopoly, which likely upset the English too. Although I am English, I am far more sympathetic to French and especially Native perspectives then my genealogy. Frankly speaking, if the French had won Canada back in 1759.....and been more dominant, I truly believe we’d have better (more balanced) lifestyles and the natives would be more dominant and a stronger voice today. The native residential schools issue would never have happened, among many other anti-native things. The native issue is a continuous event that still has not been corrected right to this minute. My Great grandfather, unfortunately, was part of the ‘police’ that went after Riel. I’m sure he was just following his orders.
I agree with your perspective. I, too, have an ancestor who fought against Riel, specifically at Batoche. Legend has it that he was conscripted on what is now Henderson Highway in Winnipeg. It is a great pity that the Metis and Indigenous people have been the victims of racist government policies.
Monsieur Alex Pearson your texte touch me a lot.
It is well writen an make a lot of sens. I have the same feeling of you speeking of the king of country Canada could be today. The métis représent the nation that should be the model of canadien people wish mean the mariage between européen and native in respect with other cultur.
Louis Riel went to collège Breboeuf in Montréal. (If am not wrong). When he was condemned there where tens of thousand people in the streets of Montréal asking to free him.
He was consider a lot.
Louis Riel did not died alone. Father Richiot was with him trought this tragic and racist murder.
Also Riel Nevers demand to kill Scott.
A few guys were drunk and killed Scott. Riel had nothing to do with that murder. Merci monsieur Pearson pour votre commentaire.
It make me feel good to see that there are a few people like you in english Canada Who have a sens of justice .
@@francvig1570 Bonjour my friend and thank you too for your kind words.
My Great Grandfather fought for the Queen, as well. Statistically, very few people in the region supported Riel. There were over 4500 Metis living in Red River, and when I look at how few backed the rebellion, that says alot. They picked a losing battle with a superior force.
@@MrMrdave1966 That’s interesting. I honestly can’t comment either way as I don’t know. I’ll certainly take your word for it. That said, It’s one of the hardest things with history is to read between the lines (not always possible) to get a true sense of what really happen. Of course, history is typically written by the victors. (history becomes a lie) What a beautiful thing, can you imagine actually knowing the truth about all history and what really happened……? I’m not suggesting that with what you’re mentioning here….. the thought just crossed my mind.
Nice documentary!
I was married to a Manitoba Metis from the Red River! I lived there too!
Canadian metis people are equivalent to Mexicans or Salvadorian, but more white and without Spanish blood
I am from the One Arrow First Nations and many Warriors from my reservation fought alongside the Metis and.
Strange at the time, he had little support. Could only raise a few hundred out of thousands. If he had the support he would won. He caused the unnecessary death of many first nations and Metis and himself.
Now a legend apparently.
After he had an innocent man summarily executed he shouldn't have expected leniency
A little an very important fact: Louis did NOT admit himself into a hospital, he was forced there by the Catholic Church for ‘hearing’ / ‘seeing’from God the atrocities that were coming. He was right. They came.
Great video, but the execution of Thomas Scott is glossed over. Otherwise, good. Thank you for posting.

@@alexpearson8481 Thank you for your thoughtful reply. That's an interesting take on how Canada would have fared if France won the French-Indian War. I also like to entertain counter-factual narratives. For instance, I sometimes wonder what would have happened if Napoleon had been victorious at Waterloo. Because my family is from India, I had a slight anti-British bias (which I have since discarded). Good for you for looking past your genealogy and seeing things from the other side. As for your great-grandfather, he truly was just doing his duty. And, in fairness, the execution of Scott was probably a valid reason to go after Riel. When we remember him and exonerate him of his crime, we are really using our hearts. Objectively speaking, he was guilty. But a solid man nonetheless. Thank you again for the reply.
