If it's rap you're after, I'd recommend, 'The Hunger', 'Illest of our Time', 'Sick Boi' and 'Sick Boi part 2', 'Losing It' and 'Seven Sins'.. Though 'Genesis' is good too. Particularly the live acoustic version. Ren does his own production btw and if you're not sure what a particular sound is, it's almost definitely Ren. He scats, beatboxes brilliantly and does his own background vocals and vocalisations. He also plays about a dozen instruments well. Half of them ridiculously well! All self-taught! He raps like a rap god but wait until you hear him sing! :) He directs most of his own videos and many are recorded live, in a single take! He's known as something of a master of the live, one take! His performance skills are first-class and his stage presence is palpable. His songwriting is world-class! Especially his lyricism. He's a poet really and a bloody great poet at that! Did i mention that he does it in every genre too?! Don't just stick to his rap and hip-hop stuff. You'll be missing out badly otherwise! Ren's a unique artist. A musical genius! Well almost all his beats. He purchased a few. He is having issues with the beat maker for "sick boi" named Kujo. Ren purchased it and the beat maker used some section of a sample and didn't get permission. So Ren is getting the problems right now.

Here is some brief information about Ren: Ren Eryn Gill was born and grew up in Wales in 1990. Later he moved to Brighton where he did a lot of busking. He studied music performance at Bath Spa University. In 2009 he became seriously ill and had difficulty attending lectures. In 2010, he was signed to Sony Records. However, as his health continued to deteriorate, he had to terminate the contract. Ren was initially misdiagnosed with depression, bipolar disorder and chronic fatigue syndrome, which led to him suffering from psychosis. It was not until seven years later that a doctor in Belgium finally diagnosed him with autoimmunity and Lyme disease, which led to brain, organ and joint damage as well as PTSD. After stem cell therapy in the United States, his health improved considerably. However, he continues to suffer greatly from his illnesses. For over a year now he is undergoing treatment in Canada.

It won't feel like 9 minutes as Ren is so good at taking unexpected turns and holding your attention.
I enjoyed this a lot! You've got positive vibes, a great smile, and an open musical mind. Yes to whatever everyone else suggests, because ... well, Ren. But if you want to hear his actual singing chops, please think about reacting to, "Back on 74/Message In A Bottle Retake." Whatever you're thinking about Ren's style/genre/vocal abilities, you didn't see this one coming. Lol. Of course, you generally don't see them coming. When you're listening to new Ren, just drop any expectations at the door. Here are a couple of general tips about Ren: 1) Live or studio version when both are available? Live. Always live. Although sometimes you need to hear both, because they are pretty different. One exception is Money Game 2 ... the official lyrics video, which might as well be a full blown music video. 2) Retake = Cover w/a Ren twist. 3) Mash-up: Whole or fragments of multiple songs, mostly other peoples', but usually containing some piece that may be wholly him to help connect the songs. (My fav is him and The Big Push doing, "I Shot The Sheriff/Road To Zion/Hip Hop." The busking session where he's wearing the red suspenders.) 4. His musical influences run the gamut ... yes, Nat King Cole, The Police, Bob Marley, Elvis, Tina Turner, Beastie Boys, and on and on. A lot of his stuff has a heavy Jamaican influence you can definitely hear. Enough for now. Great job ... you've got a new sub. I'm excited for your Ren journey! Subtitles are almost always wrong for ren. You will get used to the accent eventually. Don’t worry, us renegades are used to 20-30 minute reactions to “hi ren” and will be here for it! Also it doesn’t even seem like 9 minutes when you watch it.

When you mentioned the therapeutic effect of music and playing piano, my first thought was that you should react to Ren's piano piece, MacKay, a tribute to one of his best friends who passed away. Loved this reaction! Your energy and comments were on point. The subtitles on his videos are usually trash. However, he often pins the lyrics in the first comment under the video, or you can pull them up online. Genesis would be a good one to listen to. I think it's fine to get familiar with him before tackling Hi Ren, Jenny and Screech, and the Money Game trilogy, although those are the ones fans usually clamor for right away. Hi Ren is how most fans found him.

@@johnnybtw123Ren was bitten by a TIC and got the Lyme disease before he was 20 y.o and was very ill. But the doctors didn't knew what was wrong with him. So he was Misdiagnosed for like 10 years and he thought he was going to die. The doctors was giving him a lot of wrong medicine witch caused damage to his brain and body. He spent months and months in bed and could barely stand up, he couldn't eat anything because he throw up blood, food and everything. He became very scinny and pale and had to live with his mother because he was so weak. He didn't have money for a treatment but a stamcell doctor heard about it and offered Ren a free stamcell treatment and he became a lot better and started busking in Brighton with his band The Big Push. After that he went to Canada for several years for more treatment. Long story short, Ren is 34 y.o now, still in treatment, maybe for the rest of his life. Now he's back on home soil Brighton UK 🇬🇧 and will reales some new stuff. My favourite song of Ren is LOSING IT. His flows and syllables are so crazy good. The best hip hop/rapper I've ever heard in my entire life. 👍

If you truly want to go straight into the deep end my suggestion would be the song 'Seven Sins'. It's a lyric video though, so no worries in trying to follow what he says. FYI the first 20 seconds are in Welsh (Ren is from Wales) - it reads like a eulogy, and it's easy enough to find the translation in the comments of the video if you really want the translation.

He thought he was dying...so he wanted to experience EVERYTHING about life in the time left he thought he had...and that included doing drugs of all kinds.
In his chapters 1-8 he said in his first yr of college he did a mix and match of party drugs. When his illness kicked off after one of those party nights he thought he got spiked with bad drugs. From that point on he just went down hill with the lymes disease and was looking to get better. Except for weed and big pharma drugs I was under the impression he didn't take any more. But recently he was talking about mushrooms and possibly experimenting with micro doses, so who knows.

Check out The Hunger if you want to hear his rap skills. His singing is phenomenal too though. My favourite song that shows of his voice is Wade in The Water/Troubles So Hard with his band The Big Push. He plays base on that, he normally plays lead or piano. Loco is very cool, he didnt use any instuments just his own boice. If you can listen without the captions its better because theyre usually wrong.

Chalk Outlines, Crutch and Fred Again are just singing. Ren was initially misdiagnosed with depression, bipolar disorder and chronic fatigue syndrome, which led to him suffering from psychosis. It was not until seven years later that a doctor in Belgium finally diagnosed him with autoimmunity and Lyme disease, which led to brain, organ and joint damage as well as PTSD. After stem cell therapy in the United States, his health improved considerably. However, he continues to suffer greatly from his illnesses. For over a year now he is undergoing treatment in Canada.

But if you want to hear his actual singing chops, please think about reacting to, "Back on 74/Message In A Bottle Retake." Whatever you're thinking about Ren's style/genre/vocal abilities, you didn't see this one coming. Lol. Of course, you generally don't see them coming. When you're listening to new Ren, just drop any expectations at the door.
Here are a couple of general tips about Ren:
1) Live or studio version when both are available? Live. Always live. Although sometimes you need to hear both, because they are pretty different. One exception is Money Game 2 ... the official lyrics video, which might as well be a full blown music video.
2) Retake = Cover w/a Ren twist.
3) Mash-up: Whole or fragments of multiple songs, mostly other peoples', but usually containing some piece that may be wholly him to help connect the songs. (My fav is him and The Big Push doing, "I Shot The Sheriff/Road To Zion/Hip Hop." The busking session where he's wearing the red suspenders.)
4. His musical influences run the gamut ... yes, Nat King Cole, The Police, Bob Marley, Elvis, Tina Turner, Beastie Boys, and on and on. A lot of his stuff has a heavy Jamaican influence you can definitely hear.

He spent months and months in bed and could barely stand up, he couldn't eat anything because he throw up blood, food and everything. He became very scinny and pale and had to live with his mother because he was so weak. He didn't have money for a treatment but a stamcell doctor heard about it and offered Ren a free stamcell treatment and he became a lot better and started busking in Brighton with his band The Big Push. After that he went to Canada for several years for more treatment. Long story short, Ren is 34 y.o now, still in treatment, maybe for the rest of his life. Now he's back on home soil Brighton UK 🇬🇧 and will reales some new stuff. My favourite song of Ren is LOSING IT. His flows and syllables are so crazy good. The best hip hop/rapper I've ever heard in my entire life. 👍

He thought he was dying...so he wanted to experience EVERYTHING about life in the time left he thought he had...and that included doing drugs of all kinds.
In his chapters 1-8 he said in his first yr of college he did a mix and match of party drugs. When his illness kicked off after one of those party nights he thought he got spiked with bad drugs. From that point on he just went down hill with the lymes disease and was looking to get better. Except for weed and big pharma drugs I was under the impression he didn't take any more. But recently he was talking about mushrooms and possibly experimenting with micro doses, so who knows.

They are all different tho and it depends on the kind of sonics someone likes. His production, mixing and mastering are top level. Chalk Outlines, Crutch and Fred Again are just singing. Hi Ren and the Tales of Jenny and Screech are something entirely different than almost anything you have ever heard, You must tackle Hi Ren at some point regardless of the 9 minutes. I have been listening to him about 1 1/2 years and am well over 100 songs and not a bad one to be found.

Yooooo Johnny! Dopest beats? I’d probably go “Illest of our Time” followed by “The Hunger”. But I still strongly recommend “Murderer” the official music video followed by “Murderer” live (maybe as a double feature reaction?) to give you an idea of the talent of this man… first is a singy/rap rendition, then in the live version he sits down with an acoustic guitar and singy/raps a different version of the same song over that (with a cheeky little nod to Compton). It’s epic.
