    Southeast Asia is one of my favorite regions in the world to learn about! It's got ethnic, linguistic, and religious diversity not seen elsewhere on the planet, and it's important to learn about!

    An explanation for this is that I have European DNA, both from southern Europe (Spain/Portugal) and some additional Celtic DNA (from England/Scotland).

    You have not mentioned that the Filipinos are the only group in Southeast Asia that have a portion of Aztec Nahuatl Mexican genes and ancestry because of the 200+ year-long Manila-Acapulco Galleon Trade (2-4 ships exchanged per year during the 17th-19th centuries). It's how vegetables, fruits, flowers, trees, spices, from Mexico and Latin America got transported to the Philippines and vice-versa. Chavacano in Zamboanga City is the only Spanish creole spoken in the region (it is similar to Mexican-style Spanish with many Malay or Visayan words. There are also Portuguese mixtures in Macau and Timor Leste.

    Laos is pronounced as "Lao"
    Tagalog is pronounced as "Ta-ga-log" in which syllables are elongated

    • @jurgentreue1200
      @jurgentreue1200 3 роки тому +2

      Laos is the French contraction of "Land of the Lao". When the French first came to what is now Laos, it was inhabited by people who called themselves Lao, so the French called the region Laos. Quite silly actually as there are no words in Lao (and Thai) that end in the 's' sound. Lao have difficulty pronouncing the 's' sound at the end of a word, so they just say 'Lao'. Also, Lao never call themselves Laotian. They just call themselves Lao.
      If you want to be really technical, the inhabitants of Laos can be divided into three groups, depending on their ethnicity. Lao Loum, Lao Soung and Lao Theung. Each group have a distinctive culture and set of languages.

      @@omgreensexpress5396 you’re correct however go down to the south of the Philippines in the Middannao province and you don’t see any of that at all. I didn’t hear any Spanish words or English. In fact when you get to tawi tawi or anywhere in the sulu sea area you just don’t hear it. Remember in Marawi? That city if you go there they speak a language called meggindinaon (I’m sure I misspelled it) it has no Spanish or English words. This is the area that my wife grew up in. So I’m a sense we are both correct. Cool to hear it's your favorite region to research. I'm Cambodian so would like to see a follow up thorough video of the land from historic times. Around 800 AD that whole area was the Angkor Empire aka Khmer Empire... That led to the buildings of the Angkor Wat (the biggest religious monument in the WORLD). With it's great architecture that was even named "Khmer Architecture" there had to be some influences from there as well. They are theories that the temple was built in one day and even hundreds of years before it was actually dated. Being faced to the west (the only temple to do so) and on the same latitude of another ancient site...the Pyramid of Giza. Also, the temples line up to mirror the constellation of Draco. It be nice to see what you can find out what happened before that time.

    Not sure if this is Pure co-incidence, but as mentioned there is this group of Tribal people in Taiwan called the Kavalan. Well the co-incidence in this is that in the Tamil language spoken in South India, Kavalan actually means guardians or like bodyguards.
    Something to note is that Tamil language is by far one of the Oldest language in the world, it even far predates Sanskrit itself. But the Tamil language is Still spoken and used till today. And Hinduism is actually the Oldest religion that Has ALREADY set foot on South East Asia far before the Arabs made their way over there by ships. Evidence of this can be found by the building of ancients temples and cities and heritage sites today.
    For instance there are ancient temples and city sites that were built Far before even the famous Borrubodur in Cambodia like the Ganga Negara sites in Malaysia. These were ancients kingdoms that were captured by the Chola's since the 2nd Century. FAR before the Arabs came to Malaysia.
    Even the language spoken by these Kavalan people sounds more like the combination Thai and cambodian as to how the Taiwanese people speak. Taiwanese language is close to the Hokkien langguage Spoken in China, Singapore and in Malaysia as well.

      Wouldn't Ainu people be more related to Austronesians than ethnic Japanese? The way I see it, Ainu people, being native to the islands, arrived sooner and were of Austronesian descent. Later on, a migration wave came from mainland China. They pushed Ainu people to the northernmost island, and genetically dominated the islands of Japan.

    • @Masaman
      @Masaman  7 років тому +8

      Vitalis I always thought Ainu people were probably more closely related to native Siberians and other North Asians. I could be wrong though, I'll do some further research!

      To say Korean and Japanese as descendents of Austronesian people of course will be a bit crude IMO. But, it is widely talked about how Yamato Japanese came into existence from 2 races of people coming at different time to the Island. First Jomon, then Yayoi people. It's that Jomon people who are believed to come from the "South" which means either from Southeast Asia/Taiwan or Pacific. Even though there are no archaeological evidence for this, If we are to think about it, geographicaly, it's no doubt that Austronesians could have make it. They made it to Madagascar which is 8000 km away from Southeast Asia, why not to Japan which is just about 2000 km away from Taiwan. Linguistically, there are some similarities between Austronesian languages and japanese, but only a handful linguists support the connection like P. Benedict and A. Vovin.
      In my opinion, majority east asian (chinese, korean, japanese) have this generic look i.e. east asian look that can fit in any of the 3 countries, but there are group of people from each of these country that has undoubtedly distinctive look that only will fit in let say Japan or Korea. I've seen plentiful southeast asian looking japanese for example Japanese DJ Shinichi Osawa and Japanese footballer Keisuke Honda. They look pretty SEAsian/malay to me. i dont know much about korean, but i don't really think they have that much connection to austronesians.
      So i would not put it as : japanese are descendent of austronesians but rather put it like : a racial group that form japanese are descended/related to austronesian. Nevertheless, of course japanese would be more closely related to chinese in term of culture and recent genetic influence. Just my opinion.

    Hi, where did you get the numbers for Filipino mestizos (Spanish mestizos)? I would like to know your source. From what I can dig is that not many Filipinos have Spanish ancestry due to low number of emigrant Spaniards to the Philippines. If ever there are Filipinos who have Euro ancestry, it's very minimal. Even NatGeo Geno project shows that Southern European ancestry among Filipinos is a mere 5%. It's very miniscule and almost insignificant. Censuses during the Spanish era list no more than 40,000 Spanish mestizos among millions of natives at any given time. It's the Chinese mestizos who are quite numerous, but still a miniscule amount compared to the natives.
    The Eurasians/mestizos in the Philippines may be more numerous than their SEAsian counterparts, it's really nothing compared to Latin Americans who are usually between 40-60% European on average. Even the Amerasians are small in numbers (50,000 estimate) in the Philippines (that is among tens of millions of natives). Spanish and American mestizos are likely not more than half a million, which is like 0.5% of the Philippine population.

    I liked your video for its comprehensiveness and balance. Just a note on pronuncition: "Tagalog" is pronounce as [t'-GAH-log] with emphasis on the second-to the-last syllable (same for most long or polysyllabic Tagalog or Filipino words). "Visayan" should be pronounced as [vi-SAH-yan] with a Spanish-type letter A [short A] and not with a [long A] or [flat A = ae].

    Great job u r very accurate and informative, I could tell how much passion u had for ASEAN... but there's just one thing I need to point out, there's a new research done on the ancestry of native people of North Borneo (Sabah, Malaysia) that are in progress to be published... The aim of the study is to unravel and compare the subsequent inference of migration history, which is the 'Out-of-Taiwan Migration'. The results shows that the ancestors of the ethnics originated from Taiwan before migrated out towards Southern Philiphines and also Indonesia... Just a little bit of info, i thought i should share

    myanmar is the place where basically chinese and indian/bangladeshi meet. thailand,vietnam,cambodia,laos is mostly chinese. (even their words looks like chinese language but with some modifications. but their alphabet system is modified sanskrit alphabet system)
    malaysia mostly malay in the first place but some chinese n Indian came to this place long time ago. brunei is the pure malay nation. singapore/singapura were malay nation but now it became chinese nation. indonesia basically a bunch of highly diverse races and tribes and languages. philippines basically a mix between european especially spanish ppl with malay and with chinese and with a little bit of melanesian.
    And if u talk about the religion, indochina region is mostly buddha.. or other polytheism religion. malaysia brunei indonesia mostly muslim and indonesia has the biggest muslim population in the world (but muslim quality in indonesia is very low.. can easily brainwashed by the bad western culture), philippines is the only asian country that practices the catholicism.
    if u talk about the economy in this region, singapore is the king in the term of income per capita and the city management. indonesia is the king in the term of national GDP per year. indonesia's income is around 900billions - 1 trillion us dollar per year but the corruption rate is high.
    yup. this region is highly diverse region. But we can UNITE. Not like the EUROPEAN UNION and the WEST WORLD who CANNOT UNITE BECAUSE THE DIFFERENCIES. especially when it comes into black ppl, muslims, and the refugee problem.

    Filipinos look like other Southeast Asians like Malays, Thais, Indonesians, we are not MIXED with Spanish like some Filipinos are falsely claiming. The Majority of Filipinos are of Austronesian and East Asian ancestry . While only 0.03% have Spanish blood. Almost all of us look like South East Asians or mixed with East Asian. We're not mixed or a melting pot like other Filipinos are exaggerating. The only significant foreign blood is Chinese where 35% of Filipinos have Chinese ancestry. Spanish Filipinos are a very rare minority in the Philippines as the Spanish throughout the colonial period only migrated to the Philippines in very SMALL numbers - they were always a very small minority never numbering more than 8,000 out of 11 million Filipinos which is a micro number! The Philippines was not a settler colony like Latin America but a commercial hub.
    Consider it like Britain's relationship to India or the Dutch to Indonesia . There are just numerous small minority bubbles of foreign colonisers, resistance, and self-preservation that prevented a complete takeover unlike most of Latin America where they received massive amounts of spanish migration hence why most of them are mestizos (mixed with Spanish) Most of the Philippines was never actually colonized by the Spanish. For example most of the Interior of Mindanao and upper Luzon never saw a colonial effort. Latin American colonies were often "settler" colonies to where spaniards migrated (think USA, Canada, Australia-style colonies, made up mostly of migrants who didn't originate from there) and intermarried with most of the population.
    Philippines was an "extractive" colony, there for trade. More like the African colonies for the British and India. Spaniards didn't intermarry and migrate there in large numbers,

      Maori of New Zealand and the rest of the Polynesians mostly descended from the people from Taiwan and Southeast Asia and they are Austronesian speaking but they also have minor ancestry from Papuans. So they are much closer to a Filipino like me to than to Africans.
      For Papuans, along with the Australian Aborigines, descended from the earliest humans that settled in southern Asia and they arrived in New Guinea 40000 to 50000 years ago and they have Neanderthal and Denisovan DNA, which west and southern Africans do not have. Later human migrations later absorbed the previous inhabitants related to the Papuans and they became the South Asians and Southeast Asians today. I guess they have an African appearance because of the climate but they can grow blonde hair but keep in mind that Africa itself is very heterogeneous like how the southern Khoisan looks so different from the other Africans.
      Southeast Asians has a much higher genetic relationships with the Polynesians/Papuans than any other group including Africans. A lot of Southeast Asian groups actually has a minor Papuan/Melanesian ancestry and Polynesians are basically Southeast Asiatics that got isolated in the vast Pacific Ocean that didn't get Chinese/Indian influence and got fat somehow.

I'm not certain if the story is historically true because a few Filipino researchers find the story a bit sketchy however some believed that a few of those datus returned to try to overthrow the tyrant King they first fled from.....
