A little correction here that's probably already been stated; the Holo-guide was actually in Descent 2.
Also, the music in Overload is done by the same artists as Descent 1, 2 and 3.

Descent's one of those awesomely pixelated low-poly mid-90s games I wanted to try

Well, now's your chance! Though I will also say the original Descent is also on Steam. But honestly, this one's a bit more intuitive, so I'd recommend trying Overload first.

It really was something special back in the day. It was the type of game you upgraded your computer to play. I remember using my limited income as a teenager to upgrade the family computer's CPU from a 486 SX 33mHz (yes, megahertz) to a 486 DX 120mHz (DX means it had a floating point math-coprocessor - no GPUs back then), and upgrading RAM from 4 to 12 MB (yes, megabytes). Back then PC gamers would tweak the DOS startup files - config.sys and autoexec.bat - to get the most performance. I think I went from 12-15 frames/sec up to 45-60 and it was mind blowing for the time. Would make my little brother motion-sick to watch 😆.

"it just means that on top of all the usual movement options you’d expect from a shooter, you can also pitch and yaw"
Pitch and yaw are normal movement options in a shooter (that's how you aim!). What 6DoF adds is roll and movement up/down. :)

Ah, woops. You got me there! Didn't even think to check that.

I love this type of game that takes great influence from 90's gaming trends and genres.
This game and Dusk are two games I'm really looking forward to playing. Thanks for the great review!

Playing the original game with the analog joystick controllers for the PlayStation Is so much fun.

And we're getting Descent Underground down the road also. Though who knows how that one will turn out, since they've taken the game down from Steam to focus on development for the time being (it still updates on Steam of course)

Lmfao here we are in 2020 and Underground isn't even a thing anymore. Overload on the other hand is now available on xbox and Playstation. Overload wins by miles!

Descent was and stillman one of the best games to come out of the '90s. Still play it every now and then. Overload deserves much praise for keeping the gameplay. As exactly the same as possible. I am so grateful the devs didn't change hardly anything, and I'm grateful I can remain my ps4 controls to the original ps1 controls...I thoroughly enjoy using the d-pad and the face buttons for control, it's amazing the original was a breeze to control with this sort of movement freedoms. Overload is great and I want more.

I played Descent II with a pair of PC 3D shutter glasses that way predated NVIDIA. It was hit and miss on if it worked, but when it worked it was insanely awesome.

I've been jonesing for some Descent gameplay since my PS1 broke, but I only just found out that this game existed. Exactly what I was looking for!
My only complaints are that the levels tend to be needlessly dark sometimes, and that there is rarely ever big open spaces. It's almost entirely tight corridors. Also, the levels are less organic and twisty than in Descent. Apart from the cave sections, most of the architecture sticks to the X,Y and Z axes. It doesn't feel like they fully capitalised on the 360° rotation, at least not in the first half of the game.
I wouldn't have minded a few more levels. 15 is enough, but 20 or 30 would have been better.
Hint for newbies; Make sure to periodically save, because it only autosaves when you finish a level!
I'm also bummed out that there is no level editor on the PS4 version.

I don't know how so many people who give glowing reviews to this game seem to have somehow never heard of Sub Level Zero.
It's basically this, but with simpler graphics, and is a roguelike, meaning you get one life, and the levels change every time you play.
Other than that, it's basically more of this.
It also supports VR, just like this does. I do recommend that VR players either use a HoTAS or gamepad. Both games support both. Especially HoTAS if you have the option, seriously.
For flat screen play, you're better off using a Mouse and Keyboard if you don't have a HoTAS setup.

(4:35) Scrambling to find the "8" key? You obviously never played the original Descent

Multiplayer doesn't just have 30 people playing it, it has 30 6dof gods playing it 😂 I have done all Descents on insane and can't last 2 seconds in multiplayer.
