    We had a MS70 from 2003 new to 2012 when we sadly had to sell our farm. Brilliant machine, no problems with it, it just rusted out. Very good video, brings back memories!

    The wood piece on the top of the side is placed there as a sacrifice piece to keep the top how the spreader from getting nicked up by loader arms or the loader bucket if it happens to hit the top piece. It also protects the loader arms from getting messed up from hitting the side of the spreader. Wood is easily replaced once it starts to wear down.

    That knocking sound you hear when in use is that the chains have stretched.......and time to change the chains that’s why the wood disappears, it called maintenance ???????

    Great video and a good choice of spreader. If you know of a local sawmill then get some oak or sweet chesnut or western red cedar cut to the dimensions of the timber ready for when it needs replacing.

    the wood works to stop corrosion on edges and to stop impact damage from from buckets loading the spreader. its cool to see that style spreader as they are not common here.

    Thank you for the video.I appreciate that you are able to buy a new manure spreader and the other one lasted 16 years.That is really good.It really bothers me to have folks tell you to wash your equipment-seriously?They think that all you have to do with milking twice a day and other chores that are never ending,that you are supposed to keep your equipment washed and waxed? Come on!

    Hope whoever gets it does the same kind of good work that you did on the Norton trailer. Give it a new light-duty life.

    They're certainly good spreaders Marshalls, we've got one and it's a well built piece of kit. Spent a week doing work experience at the factory too and they're a great bunch of people

    We have a harry west 1300 about 25 years old and it rusted away the plate that the spreader was attached to and is all crooked now but to say it's that old and has spreaded thousands of tons of muck i think it did well, the worm in the middle was completely destroyed and didn't do its job at all

      I had a WEST 1150 handled all the muck on a dairy farm with 160 dairy cows 🐄 and young stock lasted on the farms from 1987 to 2001 then went but still continued to work on another farm .

    We used to have the same spreader, zuntil we changed to a 1600 west. Personally will never look back, west spreader or similar can really move some shit quick! Good vid hope new one lasts just as long 👍

    We are the same as you we need to run 2 muck spreaders to keep up on our farm we have a bunning rear discharge one and a west side discharge one

  • @Bambinohead1
    @Bambinohead1 5 років тому +4

    That's still a great spreader for somebody handy to replate the rotted out bits. The mportant moving parts are all in good order .
    Would getting a contractor in with a rear discharge machine have been an option Richard or did you give it any consideration?

    You know me full of useless info, but they put the wood on the side of the muck spreader, so it protects the steel so it lasts longer, when the timber rots away it's cheaper and easier to replace the timber than having to weld plates on, so my good man, when the timber on the new one goes (if it has one) make sure you replace it and treat the top of the steel, and you will have to weld, no more, great vids mate

    Go down to your local bank & ask for a loan. Build a new 20 unit milking parlour, put down roadways & water pipes & water troughs. I don't know how many acres you have & I don't want too but increase your herd until you are at least 4 cow's/ha. This will increase your milk solids/ha. This is where the future of your farm is. If you want your children to farm & have a decent standard of living increasing the herd is the way to achieve this. And extra cow's does not mean extra work. Keep friesian heifer replacement calves & sell the rest, get out of beef, concentrate on dairy, do dairy well as it is the most profitable enterprise on your farm by far. Use a bit of Holstein friesian on your cow's & you will get hybrid vigour. With beef gone you will not be short of fodder again. British farming has a very positive future post brexit, a loan for the above mentioned improvements will repay itself one hundred fold. Time to be brave and think big picture. You have a lovely farm, good fertile land, good British friesian cow's, I was in this position ten years ago when I went down to my bank & asked for a loan. I have that loan repayed now. Increase cow numbers & build cow infrastructure is the best investment you could make. Good morning from Ireland.

      Getting the loan is the easy part, but it has to be said that a well planned milking parlour with 20 units instead of the current parlour on this farm would save time & money over the current back breaking system.

      I don't think his children are even 10!! Bit much putting that pressure on them and indeed on himself. He could well have to work way beyond retirement age to make any massive expansion pay, something Richard may not want to do

      In my opinion doing nothing or in other words making no change, no upgrade to the infrastructure on your farm is not standing still, it's going backwards!

    • @MrPaul1f
      @MrPaul1f 5 років тому

      George, asuming he got the finance for the parlour improvments i wonder if he would have suficient cubicle capacity for extra cows.
      I do actually think you have a valid point but there are so many variables and complications, for one Richard runs it in partnership with his brother so the two would need to agree.

    Good spreaders and cheap to repair too, 👍been using a Marshall MS75 bought new back in 2008 and now needing to shorten the chain's on the rotor now. My biggest compliant is having to use them on a windy day when the wind has decided to change direction and the tractor then gets the manure blowing on instead of the fields. 🙁

    I am curious, why do you do the muck spreading your selves and not use a contractor? especially when you hire them in so much, you could spare a tractor or two on the farm an save money that way? :) As said just curious!
