After 15 years of wanting to change my ugly kitchen light, I finally did!!! Now I have a gorgeous crystal chandelier in my kitchen and all because of this video. Thank you
Very comprehensive. Helped me get the job done in less than 15 min and I had no prior experience and am terrified of electrical.
@@eztvonline3569 i have a chandelier in my dining room its a bit wobbly because my birds go on it, is that dangerous will it come falling down ?
I'm also afraid of electricity but I think I'm going to work on this next weekend
I liked right after the tip about using the ground wire to prevent the fixture from falling accidentally. That alone was worth watching the entire video; which didn’t disappoint. Thanks for the simple, uncluttered instructions!
Yes. However, not all ground wires are strong enough to hold up the fixture. In one case, a light fixture I was installing came with a metal cable wire to attach to it and hold it up during installation. I attached it and the ground wire and stepped down get something. A few seconds later the light fixture came crashing down. End of my fixture installation project for the day! The heavier ones need to people or some other way of support the fixture near the ceiling.
I’ve been sitting around waiting for someone to come and change my light fixtures… NOT ANYMORE!!!! thank you so much!!
I LOVE THIS TUTORIAL! Super simple straight to the point and an extra bonus tip using the ground wire! Could you possibly do the same type of tutorial using a crossbar and also hanging a fixture with a chain….
I am in the trades and was asked to vet UA-cam videos and provide a recommendation to a friend who wants to do this himself. This is pretty good. But for those of you who are totally and absolutely new to this, when you go to the store to buy “mirettes” or whatever he called them, just look for wire nuts. If you purchased a new fixture they’re likely included and you’re old ones may be fine.
I’m a general contractor with 25 years experience and I’ve never heard that word. I’ve changed a few hundred fixtures and work with professional electricians all the time. In America, they’re just wire nuts.
Marrette is the top brand of wire nut in Canada. Its like calling a tissue a Kleenex.
Maybe you can provide a tutorial for installing a ‘WALL light fixture’ ??? I have zero existing ‘wall light fixtures’ and really want a specific fixture but it is for wall placement only. I would love to know how to install this myself but I don’t have any idea how to do this…
@@nlm8487 if you’re replacing an existing wall fixture, it’s more or less the same as a ceiling fixture. If you want a wall fixture where there isn’t one already you’re really outside the realm of beginner DIYer and need a professional.
This is the best tutorial on how to install a lamp fixture very easy and very precise. I learned a lot from this as I'm not a person who has hung lights that much. Thank you!
Thank you. I had no prior experience with light fixture installation and your video helped tremendously!
I’ve seen other videos and they ran through the steps without showing or mentioning which wires to connect first. I wouldn’t have known. I understand connect the black wire to black and so on. When you’re dealing with electricity it’s good to go over each step like you did. Thank you!
Thanks for the video. I bought a fixture with crappy included hardware and have a tract home with low quality finish work. Just watching this video showed me what I needed to get from Home Depot to actually attach my light fixture to my ceiling. Thank you EZTV and thank you UA-cam.
Wow! This video was amazing! I can't believe I was afraid to change light fixtures for the past 20 years! LOL! I can't wait to update all the lights in my home! Yaaay! Thanks for the education! :)
This helped me so much! Thank you. Had no idea what to do with that ground wire till I seen your video!! Now I want to change all my light fixtures 😂
Albert! I am changing a light fixture and thought I better just double check and your video was the first one that came up! Perfect, that's all I needed to know. You're very handy!
Very good and easy to follow instructions, however there is one problem. You say to hook the ground wire coming from the light fixture to the green screw to hold it and keep it from falling. Still there are 3 wires coming from the ceiling - a black one, a white one, and a copper one. In the video, after you connect the ground wire coming from the light ixture to the green screw, the copper wire hanging from the ceiling mysteriously disappears (1:30 mark). What did you do with the 3rd wire (copper color) coming from the ceiling? I guess this would be another ground wire. Should you connect it to the ground wire coming from the light fixture? They both connect to the green screw? Just wondering where it went and what you did with it.
They did this wrong so the correct way would have been to wrap the ground halfway through to leave a small pigtail, than wire nut (US) or as they say in Canada Murrett. The incoming ground with the pigtail to completely ground the light. You do not need to tape it with electrical tape, it makes it harder for the next electrician coming through. That’s what homeowners do.

I have the same question, plus there is a red coated wire coming from my electrical box (for the switch) which I believe goes in the marrette with the grounded wire. However, I have noticed that any comment on here that asks a question or asks for elaboration doesn't get liked or responded to. Not so helpful.
@@BornAJarhead I think this answers my question re the ground wiring. Just to confirm my understanding, you wrap the copper wire from the new fixture around the screw of the crosspiece (is circular here) you attach and tighten, leaving some wire to then attach to the ground wire (red I think) coming out of the ceiling. In other words, you attach the copper wire to two things. Thanks!
Very stress-free and straightforward. Exactly what is needed. Thanks!
K can I just say how magical it is that a pro is right there teaching but it HANDS OFF with the amateur!? Holy moly this was all kinds of helpful.
Thank you for this! I was having trouble hanging a large fixture by myself, and the copper wire securement made it possible to do it alone. Also, I used electrical tape that I would not have done without the video.
You would not have used electrical tape? Sorry to say this, but Please stay away from ⚡
@@GoatOfTheWoods Everybody has to learn something they didn't know before. You yourself didn't come out of the womb with god like knowledge.
This video is all you need:
informative, concise and helpful.
I was able to install my four new lights after watching this video just once. Thank you!
Amazing video! Best I've seen so far (one small note though, would be useful to explain why frayed copper wire should lead first (slightly ahead of solid copper wire) when entering the plastic screw on wing-caps, this allows the frayed to clamp onto the solid copper wire. Because of you lead with the solid one first sometimes the screw wing caps will clamp down on only the solid part and the frayed part basically slips out causing arcing or low electrical connection issues. Although you did mention the electrical tape around the cap which would prevent a fire hazard
Thanks so much for pointing this out! I followed the steps in this video and it didn’t work and I felt pretty defeated but saw this comment and wanted to try again. Redid it in 5 minutes and it works now!!
This is by and far the BEST lighting installation video I have ever seen. VERY DETAILED where you show and explain everything absolutely perfectly! Well done, and thank YOU for sharing your expertise with us!!!!!!!
Except no mention of the ground wire sticking out, that just disappears at 1:31. A very incomplete explanation.
Great instructional video guys!!! I wish everything in life was this easy.
This was just what I needed!! I'll be replacing all of my light fixtures now!
this was my first time changing a light fixture and your video helped me so much!!
I want to change out the light fixture in my bathroom and put in a motion light fixture. Your instructions were so simple to follow. Thank you!
I’m 83 yo so you CAN teach old dogs 😂
This was so helpful. I was terrified of doing my own light fixtures because electrical is scary but you made it easy. Thanks!!!!!!!
Awesome thank you. My grandfather would be proud that I’m doing this!
This is the best tutorial I found. Thank you.
For anyone wondering where the other ground wire went after 1:29 I'm pretty sure you can see it chilling in the ceiling or the "box" at 3:13
What a beautiful demonstration! Thank you! One life skill added to my handy girl goal list 😊🤗💪🏼
Thsnk you! That looks so painless. 👍👍 My new light fixture is smaller than the old one I need to paint my ceiling too.
This is the BEST self help video on YT for changing out a ceiling light fixture. Thank you so much for posting this. I did not know about the green screw and the copper wire trick. So helpful because I am working all alone. Luv you guys! 💗
Thank you!!!! Was nervous to put mine up!!!! Appreciate the simplicity!!!!!!
Thank you ever so much! Installing my first pendant light ever and y'all made it SO simple!!!💛
Thank you for this video. It’s short and sweet and it brought me confidence to do my own work. ❤❤❤
Thank you for this user friendly guide made even more friendly by that yaay at the end. I would be excited like that too lol.
What did you do with the ground wire from the jbox? That was not explained.
Wow made it look so easy !! Thnx guys ? Can’t wait to change my light fixtures !!
I spent $175 on fixtures to upgrade the ones in my apt. to go along with the makeover I just completed. Home Depot wanted to charge me $300 for installation (replacement actually). So I'm glad I came across this video because i will be installing them all myself!
Just got done hanging a new dining room light fixture. Your video was quite helpful. Thanks. Mark
thank you for this! You really really really helped us old folk out!
Thank you so much! Can't wait to try this!!!
Yes, marette is french ;-) Thank you so much guys ! You help me a lot
Love this lamp beautiful and the tip looks easy
Extremely helpful. Thank u
This is an excellent video, to the point and simple instructions. Thank you!
Even though you connect the loght fixture's ground wire to the green ground screw, you should make sure the incoming ground wire from the breaker box is also connected. It's just a little more safety to guarantee that any current travelling along it returns back to the breaker box and out of the house. I know it's not a nig deal, but that's why the ground wire in your 14-2 wire is there.
Also, you should connect grounds first, neutral (white) second, and hot (black) third.
Very nice video for a novice. I want to rewire my new fixture b y adding extension rods instead of the handing string. Can you post a video for help with this?
Thank you for the video. You guys made it look easy.
Great segment in minimal time. Thank you!
Great tutorial, thank you! Man, Mark Hoppus sure is a Jack of All Trades!
I know this was made 8 years ago but, as your local Frenchman trying to install a light fixture: I don't know what "marette" means. It might originally be a mishear of "barrette", which is French for clip.
Thank you for the tutorial :)
Thanks you so much. Your video really helped me in installing ceiling light.
Thank you so much for this simple straight forward video !
I like this guy he used to work on Holmes On Homes!!! Great video.
Very helpful and just finished install my luxury Artika light 💡 by following this tutorial.
Amazing thanks 🙏
Definitely going to try this. I contacted a handyman who charges $65/hr with a 2 hr min. I found this video and will give it a go. It can't be that hard and I am not paying someone that much money just to install a light.
I am going to do this, this week. Should I leave the ground wire connected to the screw and push it with the black and white cables inside the box? or I remove the screw before pushing everything inside the box?
Hi, Thanks so much for the Groundwire hang tip !! I was finally able to put up a light myself. However i have a question. I see a ground wire from light that i screwed in to the base. But i also see a bare wire from the central connection ? What do i do with it. I see it in your video too - but you did not show what to do with it. Please advise.
Terrific, instructive video. Thank you so much for posting!
I just wasted so much time watching this because you didn't connect the ground wire to the chandelier you just ignored it completely good job guys that's such a good safety tip!
That light is very beautiful .. can anyone give link to Amazon for that please ?
Thank you - this is nice and simple, just what a lady needs to do it herself :-)
This was so helpful! Thanks for the great content!
Great video, he made it look so easy cant wait to do that myself:)
Best explanation video of installing a light fixture , great teachers you guys thank you so much!!!
good video and instruction. simple and well done.
So helpful! Thank you guys!
Thank you very much!
Very helpful video! I have to do this and your explanations were excellent. Thanks for creating this.
Thank you for making this seem so easy!
Is this a standard way of putting up a light fixture? My husband said we need to call an electrician to do it for us.
A lot of people put lights in themselves, however if done incorrectly and the fire inspector determines that the source is a faulty installation, it can void your insurance. To be really honest, you have to be pretty dumb for it to happen, so if people are that dumb, then yes hire an electrician. Generally if you don't properly insulate the two connected wires, you would open yourself up to accidents.
Thanks for explaining easy and simple. Best video!
Thank you this helped me soo much!!!! Since I dont have a guy to nag, I had to do it myself. Thank you for your simple explanations!
Very helpful - thank you!! 👍🏻
What happened to that ground wire sticking out of the ceiling at the beginning? It just kind of disappeared.
From the video it looks like he shoved the ground wire into the opening as well.
Just what was thinking. I see it shoved in there, but did they just shove it or tape it?why didnt they use it?
Seems to have magically disappeared around the 1:31 mark with no mention of it, lol
@@LurkerPatrol5 but in other videos, theres people who connect the new ground wire to the old one. You can just bypass that step and connect the new one to the green screw?
Maybe i missed something, but what do you do with the bare copper (ground) wire that comes out of the ceiling? It seems to disappear during the video! Do you also wrap it around the green screw?
This was very helpful and informative and not a long video too straight to the point thank you so much guys 🖤✨
What did u do with ground copper wire coming from ceiling? In my electrical box copper wire and the one coming from light both were knotted and cover with wire cap.
@@wildjc1 In this video i see connecting both groundwire to the base screw. ua-cam.com/video/xo_7xBwae3A/v-deo.html

Thank you! Very helpful!
This is the best video ever on how to fix your ceiling light fixture
Sincerely, I Iove this this one👌
Thanks for being soo simple
Great video -- loved the "yayyyyyy" at the end. I say "yay" A LOT
Thanks you so much I watch so many videos n they didn't show me like you did
Thanks a lot. I am terrified of electricity but I was able to do this!
Hey guys - nice easy to follow video but I noticed there was a "spare" stiff copper ground hanging out of the box with the black and white wires and you never actually mentioned what you did with it. You attached the new ground from the lamp to the plate with the green screw but totally skipped the ground coming out of the box. Do you just stuff it into the box or attach it to the plate in some way? Cheers.
Cool I'm so trying this. This will save me alot of money 😁
Thank You SO Much I Feel Confident NOW
Outstanding vid!!!
I love that all I need to know is the reference at the beginning.
What did the wires on your new chandelier are color-coded?
How would you hang a fixture the one has 2 rod and you want to have canopy parallel to a wall
Thank you so much, still can't believe I did that in one go.
This is a great video!
Great tutorial
what is your suggestion if i have two whites and two blacks wires comes with light fixture?
I got the WORST instructions from an Amazon light fixture and this was so simple and straight to the point I cannot thank you enough. My fixture set-up is pretty much identical to this, so this was a lifesaver.
I am two years into owning my first home and trying to learn as much as I can to save money while still being safe. I really appreciate videos like this that help and teach at the same time.
