Viktor Kosenko - 3 Morceaux, Op. 9

3 Morceaux for piano is a set of pieces written by the Ukrainian composer Viktor Kosenko. The Consolation was finished on December 3, the Mazurka on December 9, and the Nocturne on December 21. The pieces reveal the influence of Scriabin, and are written in a late-Romantic idiom.
Kosenko was born in 1896 as the son of a military man. From a young age, his prodigious musical abilities became apparent, as he was able to memorize a Beethoven sonata after hearing his sister play the piece. From 1908, Kosenko studied the piano under Aleksander Michałowski, and in 1914, enrolled in the St. Petersburg Conservatory after the First World War prevented his entry into the Warsaw Conservatory. After graduating in 1918, Kosenko moved to Zhytomyr and became a director at the Music School there. During his time in Zhytomyr, Kosenko fell desperately in love with Angelina Kanepp, who already had two children from her first marriage with David Eduard Kanep. Much of Kosenko’s output was dedicated to her. After living a life of poverty, Kosenko eventually died from kidney cancer in 1938, at the age of 42. The cancer was likely aggravated by the poor sanitation under which his family lived.
