    There are times when one should use this dye in an isolation tank, as you indicated. But there are times when you need to use it on the whole tank, as in the case of an ich infection. Removing only infected fishes for treatment would leave the parasites in the tank and make the inhabitants subject to reinfection.
    For an ich infection, raise the temp to 80 degrees. remove all disposable filter material such as carbon and polyester fiber. Add an airstone and add the methylene blue. When all the ich spots have been absent from the fish for a couple of days, do a 50-30% water change. Put activated carbon in the filter chain to remove the remaining dye. After the blue is gone, put in fresh carbon and continue water changes once or twice a week for a month in order to prevent ammonia buildup while your bacteria bed is reestablishing itself in the tank.
    Never use methylene blue (or malachite green) with scaleless fish (loaches, some catfish) or invertebrates.
    Treat (sterilize) any new fish or plants to avoid introducing infection to the tank.
    ----------------
    I wonder about m/blue use for fish with damaged gills resulting from the cyanide used to collect them. My understanding is that the gills are permanently damaged and the fishes likely will waste away. If the m/blue gives some palliative relief, good, but try to check out the collecting methods of the fish supplier and avoid buying those fish. Difficult I know. Did you ever get dosing info for this procedure?

    Oh I just realize I frequently saw some fish in the market packed inside a big plastic bag and it was filled with blue water now I know why the water is blue then since the caught fishes from somewhere far will take a day trip to be delivered in the fish market to prevent ammonia and nitrite buildup inside the bag they use methylene blue to neutralized or minimize it.

    About not using with scaleless fish such as loaches, Over the years I've had some major outbreaks of Columnaris and Ick. I have found that half dosing with loaches has been effective and safe. My only Loach casualty has been been Copper who was hit with Strain 1 and died within 48 hours. And did not have the Methylene Blue. I'm not an expert I just wanted to give my experience in hopes that it could help someone else.

    I watched a science video, that showed this substance, turns blue when you shake it in a jar, and as the oxygen bubbles out of the water (within maybe 20-30 seconds) it turns clear again. He said Methylene Blue is a "universal indicator" and is a "reversible chemical reaction".

    • @uwotm8363
      @uwotm8363 9 років тому +1

      Jay H Well, Methylene blue is not a proper pH indicator. You are most likely confused with methyl violet or something like that. It is great however as a dye or to treat methemoglobemia in humans.

    Hi, I purchased a betta fish who developed this cotton-like growth on its body. I kept him in a 6 gallon fluval edge tank with a filter and heater set to about 79F. Unfortunately this is the second betta that developed this fungus growth and died within 3-5 days of purchase. I followed instructions regarding regular 25-30% water changes every other day and always used a water conditioner to top up the water. I am not sure what I am doing wrong. Would you suggest I quarantine any new betta in methylene blue before introducing into the tank? Also do I replace 100% of the water if my fish died in the tank and clean out the ornaments (I dont have real plants only silk smooth plants and smooth rocks)? Lastly, I noticed that the fungus developed usually after feeding my betta freeze dried blood worms. Could the diet affect them? Sorry for the long questions... I am new to this hobby.

      Hi I hope that you still interest in this hobby otherwise I will be losing my time doing this, I have a betta who had the same problem. This is what you have to do 100% water change every day, keep him in 1 gallon of water can be tap water without conditioner betta are very strong fish and the tap water may actually help more. Be sure of cleaning the jar(made of glass not plastic) with a sponge that is clean of chemical. Use melafix and quick cure. Keep doing this until you see the that the fungus have disappear. My betta is alive and have being living with my for over 2 years.

      Hi David, thanks for your response. I am still interested in this hobby. I have since held back on buying any fish till I do my full research on them. Its devastating when you have a helpless fish that you can't help and dies. I am looking into other fish that can withstand my fluval tank. Also I may not have done a good cycle with the water. I was advised to buy the api fresh water test kit to have proper water conditions (I.e. check ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, etc) for my fish. Its intereting that you state that they can withstand normal tap water. At this point I have spent like $400 plus and don't really want to keep having to spend more. Again thank you for your response! Have an awesome day!

    My infected fish is already in a hospital tank. Now I've added the recommended dosage of methylene blue per liter and also placed an air stone for oxygen. Now my questions are:
    (A) Won't my fish need beneficial bacteria anymore?
    (B) Can I / Should I feed my fish?
    (C) How often or do I even need to do water change?
    (D) When should I add more methylene blue?

I simply dip him and then put him in clean tank water to wash off the MB and then place him back into his regular tank that's treated with betta fix. Am I doing this right? Old comment, but just to clarify...
      You don't put methylene blue in your tank. It's used for dips/baths in a separate environment, then the sick fish is returned to the tank.

      liz cooper Those are "separate environments" by definition, ie not the regular tank. You don't put methylene blue in your regular tank.

    I think my fish is addicted to methylene blue.
    He had a terrible fungal infection and we alternated salt dips with methylene blue in the tank (1tsp/10Gal).
    After 3 weeks, he recovered, got very active and we returned him to his outdoor pond.
    Less than 24 hours later, he beached himself, and almost dead, we brought him back into the hospital tank in plain water. Next day he looked horrible, so we added methylene blue. Today, he is happy again and swimming normally. We joke he is a meth head now.
    In all seriousness, has anyone else experienced this? He is a pond goldfish.

    Hi. Anyone who can answer this please as my methylene blue water is currently stored. I also realized not much fish keepers are actually aware of proper disposal methods
    How do you dispose of this blue water?
    Normally, water from my tank is dtored and i use it to water plants.
    Is methylene blue same as antibiotics that you dont pour them straight down the drain?
    Do i throw it down the drain? Do i water it in soil? Methylene blue is known to kill awuatic plants. I really dont know. Anyine who will answer is such a great help. Thank you so mucb

    this is a methylene blue bath..for fresh water..12mg/L methylene blue solution for 10 minutes

    • @Inapeartree
      @Inapeartree 3 роки тому +1

      How do you measure 12 mg from a dropper? How does one get 12 mg in volume, unless you weigh it? It would depend on the w/volume of methylene blue you have, they're not all the same.

    • @mariakoth
      @mariakoth 3 роки тому +1

      @@Inapeartree I get a solution with known concentration from the pharmacy and then dilute the proper amount of it to the proper amount (I do the math) of dechlorinated water. I don't use the dropper to measure it, I use a siringe with ml markings on the side. And, yes, the amount of the solution you would use depents on the initial concentration. And yes, the concentration is in w/v because meth blue is initially a powder, 1% solution means 1g of meth blue in 100 ml solution.

    • @Inapeartree
      @Inapeartree 3 роки тому

      @@mariakoth ah yes. Makes sense. I was wondering how to do this with my basic bottle of methylene blue.
      My bottle of methylene blue only says 4 oz, 118 ml. I looked around the bottle and the only other information is 5 tsp per 3 gallons will give 50 ppm.
      I actually ended up doing a calculation to get the volume down to 0.5 L solution. Tsp to drops, gallons to mL.

    Not quite correct. It will only kill a very small amount of good bacteria in the main tank/filters and a whole lot of bad bacteria - Including killing off blue green algae. It is target specific and very much dose dependent - typically 3ml per 1000L each water change will ensure a healthy tank.
