    Can we all just take a moment to sincerily appreciate how well Paul Andersen has actually portrayed the character of Arthur Shelby? Simply amazing.

  • @Da_Benski
    @Da_Benski Рік тому +37

    One problem I see is that Tommy's greed exacerbates Arthur's problems with additional stress. Arthur from the beginning liked to play things safe and live relatively comfortably in the corner the Shelby family established for themselves. He never wanted to rock the boat with Billy Kimber.
    But ass far as redemption, the rule is that you can't change as a person while doing the same things with the same people. There's a reason that people that quit drinking gradually lose friendships with old drinking buddies. With crime, you have to make a clear break. Even just hanging around your old crew will suck you back in, a point presented in films like Carlito's Way.

    I just started this video and I like it already. I think the difficulty of arthurs redemption is that he has to, in many ways be a killer regardless so how much can he change from a guy with ptsd that actually kind of enjoys it to the head of a gang that still has to kill.

    Tommy actually does have animalistic tendencies and severe PTSD. The thing about him is, he has extreme self control and has found that if he keeps moving, he can keep it down. That’s why when he went on holidays, he started relieving the war with barely any stimuli. We see that he’s also very much prone to violence, when he kills that Irishman in the Garrison and Moss says he looks like he was attacked by a wild animal (Tommy kept going well after the man died)
    John seems to have the least PTSD of all, especially after his marriage, but he’s also impulsive, and prone to violence.

    There are a few things in the video that don't reflect what I remember from the show. I can't remember Tommy needing to use a great deal of violence to maintain his illegal bookies business (at least not on the scale of the show) he could have just had a nice business and stayed where he was. It's not until he expands that there is a need for greater violence. Arthur does fire the machine gun but to me, this seems like an effective use of violence he's under attack he fires and then he's not under attack (they seem to have run off from the lack of return fire) this would be a bonus reason for Johns problem is capacity for violence (probably more so than Tommy) has an advantage for him to fulfill his role and why another character describes him as an attack dog. Also, Tommy doesn't force the business supplying Arthur with drugs to close down he only forces them to stop the drug's side of their business but still allows them to sell things (if I remember correctly it's also a cafe.

    Arthur shelby is a typical borderline personality. I was diagnosed with BPD 6 years ago ( after 2 years of therapy have been told that I dont meet the criteria to be diagnosed anymore 🎉), let me try give my reasoning about this as follows.. 1) his emotions are erratic and can be set off over slights to his character. 2) He tries to kill himself and constantly suffers with depressive episode, psycopaths have so much love for themselves they rarely try to off themselves. 3) His affinity to violent impulsivity and constant need to numb himself with substance abuse, and it all comes from a place of pain. For example the scene where he killed the boy is a classic Borderline rage moment, as he feels remorse straight away. There is a massive overlap between PTSD and BPD and he might experience both. 4) His mother actually killed herself which is a trauma that he or tommy never fully acknowledged or dealt with. 5) Tommy and John both exhibit Anti social tendancies, which are cold and impulsive, but where that differs from Arthur is that he is in Constant pain. The emotional centre of the brain in borderlines is about 3 times the size of the average population, so when something hurts it hurts 3 times as much. This is different from psycopathy because they actually have an emotional centre which is about half as much as the average population. 6) he shows signs when with Linda that he was a changed man and definitely has the capability of recovery, however his evil Borderline side comes out and ruins that. Without treatment this condition is actually more common among prisoners these days because they can't keep their emotions under control.
    Still, amazing video and incredible work fella! Really informative and good to deep dive into the struggles of strong male characters in TV

    0:38 it was life or death there and he didn't have a weapon. He was defending himself. More or less, Arthur is a sociopath, not a psychopath because a psychopath doesn't have any emotions or loyality to no one. If he was a psychopath he could've try to kill Tommy to take his place in the gang and familly but we found out he defended his familly in his teenage years by fighting cops who raided them with a pitchfork, I think. A psychopath is born, a sociopath is made.
