This is the best demo I've seen of the KO. Everyone else just makes a 4 beat pattern loop and then dicks around with the knobs and calls it a day. Also, it's great to see the PMA-5 around ! Still got mine.
At this point Florian not having a sponsorship from IKEA... ummm... I mean Teenage Engineering, is yet another reason why this world feels so unjust. Final jam was a killer!
I imagine it's what the SP-404 MKII would have been like if it had been born 4 months early and got a near-fatal oxygen deficit during labour. Sounds pretty good though.
Great episode! In future I'll rate all Bad Gear on the MPE scale (memes per episode).... this one clocking in at a respectable 107 memes contained within
The awesome thing about the KO2 is that you get 4 lanes of 12 pads, and you can use all 16 MIDI channels. It's perfect for sequencing multitimbral rack stuff if you're looping patterns. But if you just wanna chain things and press play it can't do that. Ridiculously, it sends SongPos 0 + Continue when you press play. It never sends a MIDI Start message. And it tries to restart everything on the current bar it was on. So it's an awkward setup because you need to get the start/stop signal from something else that actually sends a normal MIDI Start message. So it's awesome in a very limited context LOL.
all this baby needs is Reverse/loop samples, Resampling, song mode, and recorded perf FX (and maybe some gritty bit crusher fx slot b/c it sounds so good). Honestly at this price point its quite inspiring and with a fast workflow, not perfect ofc, but still pretty fun.
@@user-mb8rf7qk5q regarding the pattern chaining/song mode - he's describing literally every sequencer that is capable of storing multiple patterns, including all of the Pocket Operators, which the EP is supposed be the 'bigger brother' of. @@user-mb8rf7qk5q Word, I was about to say... Bro just wants an SP-404 MK2. I agree, I use the PO-33 KO in conjunction with an SP-404A. Everyone has their own workflow but I definitely wanna get an EP-133 because it looks super easy to get the hang of.
Top Tier Episode. Featuring one of my favorite toys, verdict is on point, one of the best jams and a dark souls reference. The weekend starts with a bang.
We've all been waiting with bated breath for this one and King Florian does not disappoint! Another instant classic with bonus points for aptly labeling the display "whimsical"
Only audiopilz can make me look at a TE hardware for long enough that I notice that that screen reminds me of all-in-one AIWA towers from the late 90s with 3 or 5 CD interchangers. That.
Loving the Whisper of the Heart montage - easily my favorite ghibli movie, and worthy of being known as so much more than just The Origins of Lofi Girl
Bro finally. Long story short I've had three. One of them shorted out and I thought for sure TE wouldn't consider it for warranty replacement, but they were awesome about it and sent me new one really fast. Of the three I've had, I've had zero issues with faders or anything like that. Firmware update yesterday allows for library backups. They're seriously not bad at all for what they are.
Thanks for the review! I was eyeballing this thing and, since all my my stuff has gotten the bad gear treatment, I guess this gives me the go-ahead to get one. Unrelated: My son has your "enough reverb bro" pic hanging up behind the front of house mixer he runs at his high school theater.
Its kind of "ironic" that the ko-II is probably the only TE product I can take "serious" as well as this is the first episode of bad gear I did "enjoy" - and to say this MADLIB style... with youtube channels and samplers its pretty much the same thing: It is about what you put in it ... a sampler has no soul so you have to put some soul in it to make it sound funky!
If TE ever would make a 80's analogue keyboard-ish thing it'd be priced at $49,999.99. And shrunk down to a smaller size than the roland boutiques and made of legos.
I see a new AudioPilz upload, I click a new AudioPilz upload... Twice... First for the video's intended purpose, the second to catch all of the perfectly placed memes. Another great release!
If I didn't have too many sampling options already, I'd absolutely go for one of these purely because I love how easy Tennage Engineering stuff is to access and use. Plus, I'd buy the shit out of a Lego Delia Darbyshire set.
I was mildly intrigued by this 1980s office calculator repurposed by Teenage Engineering as a modern day novelty 'Groovebox'. Looking for an honest review, I came across your 'Bad Gear' channel. After watching the video, I decided to check out the current price on Amazon. They offered a 'Like New' one for £242 with a new one costing about £20 more. Almost temped to 'Go for it', I was suddenly stopped in my tracks...... Not only does it look like a 1980s office calculator but by all accounts, the build quality dates from that era as well (in fact, calculators were probably better built). So in conclusion, I decided that the K. O. II would almost certainly end up broken at the back of the wardrobe (or under the bed) after just a few months (or maybe even less) of use. Thanks for all your effort in making this highly enjoyable video and I'll be watching some more of your 'Bad Gear' reviews. 🙂
It puts me immediately in mind of Don Henley’s appearance on VH1 Stprytellers circa 2000 when he came out with his solo record *Inside Job.* During the show, he mentioned how one fan had clamored for him to sing an Eagles song and another suggested he modernize it. The result was a screwy hop-hop reinvention of “Life in the Fast Lane”, during which he slung (what looked like) a Boss Dr. Sample around his neck like a snuggly and triggered chopped samples from the original Eagles track as he performed the song.
This is essentially what I've read about this iteration of the pocket operator. Tbf, that balenciaga Ikea bag is a huge blue leather bag with fabric lining, and they even made the leather look crumpled. It's rich kitsch. Appearing normal but if you look closely it's not an Ikea bag at all but a huge, high-quality leather duffle bag that's made to look like an Ikea bag. It'd make a great carry-on.
Good review. A few more gripes: 1) It only has 9 project/song slots. 2) There is no way (at present) to back up projects (still only importing/exporting samples). 3) The keystrokes make absolutely no sense (the most notorious example being shift+Erase which doesn't erase anything but actually enters global settings). 4) 3.5mm MIDI sockets (adaptors sold separately - which is not the case with the Novation circuit Tracks, Sonicware Liven Lofi12 or similarly priced grooveboxes). 5) Gimmicky packaging which leads to #Fadergate (it's as if they made the boxes before designing the machines and rammed them in regardless). 6) A 12 pad UI which goes in order of bottom left to top right (most machines I've used feature 8 or 16 pads and work from top left to bottom right). 7) Machine depends on proprietary webware for sample transfer (it's 2024. I just want a machine into which I can slam an SD card containing wavs. Also, there is no stand-alone sample-transfer application. So when the TE website is down, you're screwed). 8) Poor build quality (I'm keeping mine boxed and in a drawer until Decksaver release their protective lid for this machine with its wonky fader, knobs and fragile display).
Agree on the 12 pad layout, although my Maschine starts from bottom left as well. Ideally the 4 group buttons would be pads too - the buttons have the pressure sensors, apparently. You could hold Sound + a group button to switch groups, and as a handy side effect it would eliminate accidentally changing groups when finger drumming.
Yeah, I'm waiting for the day a prolific bad gear manufacturer like Roland decides to cut out the middleman and hires you to do the entire product launch for their newest offbeat groovebox! @@AudioPilz Think about it.
