Welcome to Bad Gear, the show about the world's most-hated audio tools.
I'm the...
Teenage Engineering
Today we are going to talk about EP-133 KO II. This compact sampler and 80s tax consultant’s best friend lookalike is based on one of TEs very own Pocket Operators and while its price tag seems to be missing another zero at the end having "how to repair it" videos come out only days after its release is NOT the kind of innovation we had wished for.
Thanks to Klangfarbe for lending me one of their Teenage Engineering EP133 K.O. II floor models:

UA-cam once again unsubbed me from the channel. Why YT keeps doing that? Dear God.
At the first glance it's boxing all the ticks.
lol
that package must be very buggy, then. :P
Plays sample of "Spooooooooooooooooon!"
@@Zoie3x8I'm itching to try one!
At first glance it’s tickling my box
"dawless fast fashion" what an amazing way to describe PO's!
😀😀😀
@@AudioPilzalmost like this guy is a journalist or something right
I thought the same. Classic!
super accurate indeed
its really simplier to arrange something with my free version of 8-track ableton)))
I imagine it's what the SP-404 MKII would have been like if it had been born 4 months early and got a near-fatal oxygen deficit during labour. Sounds pretty good though.
Lol, shots fired;)
Pressing down a little key , it plays a special melody.
❤️❤️❤️
Bleep de bleep bloop de bleep. Bum tsss
Bleep de bleep bloop de bleep. Bum bum tsss
At this point Florian not having a sponsorship from IKEA... ummm... I mean Teenage Engineering, is yet another reason why this world feels so unjust. Final jam was a killer!
Thank you!!! Yeah, I got a Billy on screen all the time;)
Roland owes him money at this point
Those teenagers should take some tips on build quality from Mattel.
@@AudioPilz i use Ikea furniture names all the time to confuse chat bots an Ai prompts
if you ever do IKEA bad gear, i got a pretty fucked up billy i can lend you ;)
This is the best demo I've seen of the KO. Everyone else just makes a 4 beat pattern loop and then dicks around with the knobs and calls it a day. Also, it's great to see the PMA-5 around ! Still got mine.
Thank you so much!!!
Seriously, for this review I'll get mine.
It’s really impressive how many videos you crank out every week. Along with replying to pretty much every single comment. Wish I had your work ethic.
Thank you so much!!!
Operator of my pocket calculator
@@AudioPilz if I press this special key it plays a little melody
I had one of those grey screen calculators. Punch in a random number, hit sq. root, and you got a random melody. 😄
Alternatively, it could be the new school song, Fortunato & Montresor - The Operator
shame!
Great episode! In future I'll rate all Bad Gear on the MPE scale (memes per episode).... this one clocking in at a respectable 107 memes contained within
Wow, thanks for the heads up!!!
I think you just found your calling, official meme-r of record
The awesome thing about the KO2 is that you get 4 lanes of 12 pads, and you can use all 16 MIDI channels. It's perfect for sequencing multitimbral rack stuff if you're looping patterns. But if you just wanna chain things and press play it can't do that.
Ridiculously, it sends SongPos 0 + Continue when you press play. It never sends a MIDI Start message. And it tries to restart everything on the current bar it was on. So it's an awkward setup because you need to get the start/stop signal from something else that actually sends a normal MIDI Start message.
So it's awesome in a very limited context LOL.
True that! Thanks for the heads up!
If it resampled (which I've heard TE is working on), it would literally double in capability but it's still pretty nice in current form.
Agreed!!!
Where did you hear that?
Dude... You f-ing kill me every episode... Most of all I appreciate the reminder to laugh at the absurdity of my gear obsession. Cheers.
Thank you so much!!!
The genre-specific memes always send me down a rabbit hole for a few minutes, before I realize I was still watching this. xD Jungle is indeed Massive.
R.E.S.P.E.T.C.E
We have all been waiting for this episode
❤️❤️❤️
But not for long.
Its kind of "ironic" that the ko-II is probably the only TE product I can take "serious" as well as this is the first episode of bad gear I did "enjoy" - and to say this MADLIB style... with youtube channels and samplers its pretty much the same thing: It is about what you put in it ... a sampler has no soul so you have to put some soul in it to make it sound funky!
Interesting take!!!
all this baby needs is Reverse/loop samples, Resampling, song mode, and recorded perf FX (and maybe some gritty bit crusher fx slot b/c it sounds so good). Honestly at this price point its quite inspiring and with a fast workflow, not perfect ofc, but still pretty fun.
Let's hope for some firmware goodness!!!
Does it not have a song mode? Even the PO-32 and 33 allow for easy pattern chaining. That's a hugely missed feature if true
You're describing an SP404mk2. I have both...they make a good team.
If TE made an overpriced Juno clone, the Gearspace thread on it would be 700 pages of flame wars
...and all of them would be secretly preordering...
Loving the Whisper of the Heart montage - easily my favorite ghibli movie, and worthy of being known as so much more than just The Origins of Lofi Girl
Agreed!!! Awesome movie!!!
Mr Game & Watch..! Wow that is exactly the entire Vibe of TE. Like he is the one who designed all of their products 🤯
Agreed!!!
you could write a phd thesis on the term "dawless fast fashion"
Lol, great idea!!!
Only audiopilz can make me look at a TE hardware for long enough that I notice that that screen reminds me of all-in-one AIWA towers from the late 90s with 3 or 5 CD interchangers. That.
😂😂😂
Props to getting a solid episode like this out every week. Appreciate your dedication :)
Thank you so much!!!
Brilliant review, the fast fashion idea for the P.O's is very clever too
Thank you!!!
I had a feeling this would end in badgear, but didn't expect to be this soon
Klangfarbe needs to push an unloved product
Direct-to-Bad Gear...
@@AudioPilzAlmost like a bad movie so bad, it’s good! 😊
Yeah, I'm waiting for the day a prolific bad gear manufacturer like Roland decides to cut out the middleman and hires you to do the entire product launch for their newest offbeat groovebox! @@AudioPilz
Think about it. After a period of expensive initial production and promotion, the TB-303 was a huge failure among its intended target audience, but it eventually became a coveted cult classic in the synth community. These days, Roland seemingly can't stop bragging about it. By launching a questionable new product design directly through your Bad Gear platform, they could make the transition from "culled product status" to "coveted cult status" in record time, and actually sell a ton of new reissue designs of that product in record time for record profits! 😉
This is proper bad bad gear rather than the often good bad bad gear often on the the show. TE almost got me on this one but after my PO33 died after only 3 months, decided to go back to my trusty good bad Yamaha VSS-30 and Casio SK1!
Ah, classic setup!!!
Top Tier Episode. Featuring one of my favorite toys, verdict is on point, one of the best jams and a dark souls reference. The weekend starts with a bang.
Thank you so much!!! Have a nice weekend!!!
Each friday I breath a sigh of anxiety when I don't see the microkorg 2 being featured
These are incredibly hard to get hold of!!!
@@AudioPilz Loopop showed one BUT some of the features he couldn't demo as they had not yet been wired up. #Unfinished
It won’t be long
This comment actually made me laugh out loud
Love this sampler. such a lovely and well thought out instrument. great episode.
Thank you!!!
We've all been waiting with bated breath for this one and King Florian does not disappoint! Another instant classic with bonus points for aptly labeling the display "whimsical"
Thank you so much!!!
According to Nintendo, he is just a prince.

different song reference but both are bangers
Praise be the algorithm.
First time I've come across you, your work anyway. Obviously.
Enjoyable.
Thanks!
Thank you so much!!!
Weeeee it's weekend, and new episode of stuff I would buy and cry I don't know how to use again
Thank you so much!!!
lol the monorail cat got me
That one had me rolling too!!!
If TE ever would make a 80's analogue keyboard-ish thing it'd be priced at $49,999.99. And shrunk down to a smaller size than the roland boutiques and made of legos.
I’ll take 2!!!
Bro finally. Long story short I've had three. One of them shorted out and I thought for sure TE wouldn't consider it for warranty replacement, but they were awesome about it and sent me new one really fast. Of the three I've had, I've had zero issues with faders or anything like that. Firmware update yesterday allows for library backups. They're seriously not bad at all for what they are.
Wow, that's quite a track record!!!
So entertaining and informative. Love the jams.
Thank you so much!!!
Thanks for the review! I was eyeballing this thing and, since all my my stuff has gotten the bad gear treatment, I guess this gives me the go-ahead to get one. Unrelated: My son has your "enough reverb bro" pic hanging up behind the front of house mixer he runs at his high school theater.
Thanks!!! That poster is super epic!!!
great jams, as always!
Thank you so much!!!
3:45 Just noticed you used my Ferris Bueller pic 😂😂😂👍🏻
phenomenal job as usual
Thank you!!!
As always, the best synth related content on the web! 🙏
Thank you so much!!!
If I didn't have too many sampling options already, I'd absolutely go for one of these purely because I love how easy Tennage Engineering stuff is to access and use.
Plus, I'd buy the shit out of a Lego Delia Darbyshire set.

Great movie!!!
@@AudioPilz One of my absolute favorites!

Good review. A few more gripes:
1) It only has 9 project/song slots.
2) There is no way (at present) to back up projects (still only importing/exporting samples).
3) The keystrokes make absolutely no sense (the most notorious example being shift+Erase which doesn't erase anything but actually enters global settings).
4) 3.5mm MIDI sockets (adaptors sold separately - which is not the case with the Novation circuit Tracks, Sonicware Liven Lofi12 or similarly priced grooveboxes).
5) Gimmicky packaging which leads to #Fadergate (it's as if they made the boxes before designing the machines and rammed them in regardless).
6) A 12 pad UI which goes in order of bottom left to top right (most machines I've used feature 8 or 16
pads and work from top left to bottom right).
7) Machine depends on proprietary webware for sample transfer (it's 2024. I just want a machine into which I can slam an SD card containing wavs. Also, there is no stand-alone sample-transfer application. So when the TE website is down, you're screwed).
8) Poor build quality (I'm keeping mine boxed and in a drawer until Decksaver release their protective lid for this machine with its wonky fader, knobs and fragile display).
Thanks for the heads up!!!
Backup tool released yesterday!!!
@@AdventureVanMan Does it back up projects? I thought it was just for erasing/restoring sample sets.
@@dinogoldie9716 No they added a backup function to the sample editor
Agree on the 12 pad layout, although my Maschine starts from bottom left as well. Ideally the 4 group buttons would be pads too - the buttons have the pressure sensors, apparently. You could hold Sound + a group button to switch groups, and as a handy side effect it would eliminate accidentally changing groups when finger drumming.
Happy Friday / Bad Gear Day!!! Love the TE fashion comparisons hahaha.
Thank you!!! Have a nice weekend!!!
i'm now becoming a patron. having so much fun with your videos.
Thank you so much!!!
It really sits nice in the mix for Lo-Fi House / Retro dance drums.
😀😀😀
I've always wondered how long it usually takes you to get to grips with the features of the instruments you're testing.
Another amazing video! :)
Thank you!!! I'm usually ready to jam within 1-2h, am somewhat proficient within a day and everything is gone Saturday after the ep release😂😂😂
@@AudioPilz, You're a genius! 😀
Absolutely Brilliant. Love the final Track. Great humor.
Thank you so much!!!
Thanks, Florian, I've been wondering about this one. Happy Friday 🙌😌

Been waiting for this! 😅
It was about time!!!
THE EPISODE WE ALL HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR!!!!!
😀😀😀
nice to see it covered ... this is my favorite sampler right now. it's so fun.
👍👍👍
It puts me immediately in mind of Don Henley’s appearance on VH1 Stprytellers circa 2000 when he came out with his solo record *Inside Job.* During the show, he mentioned how one fan had clamored for him to sing an Eagles song and another suggested he modernize it. The result was a screwy hop-hop reinvention of “Life in the Fast Lane”, during which he slung (what looked like) a Boss Dr. Sample around his neck like a snuggly and triggered chopped samples from the original Eagles track as he performed the song.
Wow, I have to check this out!!!
I don’t think it’s uploaded here, AP, Unfortunately. I wish it were. Just did a search for it.
at most this should be 150 and thats being very generous. +300 retail is absolutely ridiculous.
I'd buy that for a $
Some YT channels shill $500-$600 FX boxes. SMH
Love that it has a pattern length for musicians
It totally does!!!
4:26 THIS more than any other quirk of the thing made me perceive my K.O. II as a cool "toy" and not an actual sampler/groove box. Also, the point where I gave myself a teeny pat on the back for growing enough to need a little more outta my hardware. Now off to overshoot wildly and get a Dirtywave Tracker! lol
I want one of them m8s!!!
Good stuff as always!
Honestly, it is kinda appealing (with some significant limitations, though, ofc)
Thank you!!!
Well-rounded basses. Jeepers
🍑🍑🍑
The next one will be in the shape of a VHS recorder. No no wait! A FREAKKING BETAMAX!!!
I'd buy that for a $
Next: T.E. markets VCR that costs $2000. Hipsters love it.
I wish these Teenages would grow up. THIS UNIT, just add a PAPER ROLLER HOLDER at the TOP and you have a decent adding machine.
Way to go
I saw this a while back, and thought? it won’t be long until AudioPilz does a Bad Gear video on this!
None too soon!!!
Just backed up all my projects yesterday. It's quickly becoming one of my favorite pieces of gear. Really gets me creating and creating, inspirational workflow
Nice!!!
02:29 Florian you can't just play that out of nowhere while I'm eating 😂😂😂
😂😂😂
I never considered performing the patterns like that! For some reason the commit function and the way scene/pattern structuring works, so this is a great workaround that still allows for full song creation (when recording externally). After learning how the original had a live pattern jumping I was disappointed the KO II didnt have anything like it, how did i not see this right in front of me?? Great wirk though, this is my 3rd Bad Gear and you definitely earned my sub at this point
Nice, Bad Gear Bingo!!!
"While the price tag seems like missing another zero on the end" 🤣 This was my first thought too when I saw it the first time
"Flawless hipster flair" is the best description of the TE experience I have heard so far
😀😀😀
Bad Gear videos are the fun way to test the durability of your space bar.
I test the K key instead.

Gut busting review and awesome tracks to boot

Thank you so much!!!
The one and only episode the world needed.
Thank you so much!!!
I really like this device. I'm picking up music again after 9 years of absence. Being an adult now I can afford my own stuff. This seems like a dope way to start and have great fun.
Nice!!!
Thanks for the laughs and hey! Good job with the lofi beat at the end with all those ghibli images... 👌
Thank you so much!!!
I’ve been using it as a drum machine through my DAW and love it
Nice technique!!!
Wow, I was using this the other day and just got so frustrated, you kill it! P.S. thanks for using my amen break meme, day made! 🏆
Great one, thanks!!!
I like the stock sounds more than the unit itself! Fortunately some hero shared them online.
Please do the Pioneer Toraiz SP-16 at some point! The sampler the world forgot 💔
Same here!!! Great suggestion, thank you!!!
Really good jams as usual Florian! I bought their little sequencer the other week cos it was so cheap. Ive put it together but not played with it yet. I hope you have some old gear in the pipeline. Think I mentioned it Korg Micro X the weird hybrid controller, Groovebox synth thingy in the orange suitcase. Prices are cheap and it has a Triton engine.
Thank you!!! Some true vintage classics in the pipeline!!!
@@AudioPilz Brilliant that's great to hear! Looking forward to it Fridays wouldn't be the same without a bit of Bad Gear! Hope you're doing well. 🙂
That screen looks like I wouldn't have the patience to try and decipher the confusing design language. On my po33 it's ok, it's gimmicky, but you don't need much information anyways.. just halftime the sequencer, load a kick or two to the melodic tracks, some breakbeats and some weird stuff. Press and hold scratch or loop effects. Gabber. Breakcore. Cool. Fun.
On this thing it looks like they could have easily decided to dedicate the space to something more useful and less aesthetically infuriating.
Would love to see your take on the Octatrack! I think you're the only person who could master it in a week
Octatrack is moving up my list!!!
Omg the 👑 I love this piece

The irony is despite costing a fraction of what the OP-1 costs, it seems to be more useful.
Exactly my thoughts
Damn, the lofi song you got out of this is legitimately amazing. I'm so bad with this device lol
Thank you so much!!!
Six and a half minutes in then Bam! the Roland content that keeps me coming back.

Beep boop....buuuuurrrrrrrr
I find it funny how people use the price to justify the poor quality, the truckload of bugs and the terrible specs and poor feature-set. If you pay, literally a few Euros more then you can get a Novation Circuit Rhythm or an Electron Model:Samples. What you get for those few euros extra, is a ton of features, vastly more memory and dramatically fewer bugs (if any at all) -and of course no broken faders....
Yeah, these are serious competitors
This is certainly one of the instruments and samplers of all time.
Great demo music you made on this!
Thank you!!!
Write, thank you so much, that was a long awaited video 😁
Thank you!!!
Sold mine after running again and again into issues with samples cutting off other samples... Limiting yourself is fine, but this was simply unmanageable... and not fun. Also the fader issue (used a round Lego piece to avoid it) and the limited FX per group somewhat frustrated me. It could have been great, but the devil is, as always, in the details, I guess...
Note stealing is a thing indeed
This is essentially what I've read about this iteration of the pocket operator. Tbf, that balenciaga Ikea bag is a huge blue leather bag with fabric lining, and they even made the leather look crumpled. It's rich kitsch. Appearing normal but if you look closely it's not an Ikea bag at all but a huge, high-quality leather duffle bag that's made to look like an Ikea bag. It'd make a great carry-on.
"Cigarettes
