Interesting video and Linux setup, Arch upgrades can be annoying sometimes

Thank you very much Mench for your content, always good and informative. What happened to you is the main reason why I just run Debian 12 (installed just with the kernel and few utilities) and my script, will deploy IIIIIIIIII33333333 window manager (doesn't work the same like when you say AAaaawwwweeeessssoooommmeeee window manager :P ) + anything I need. Rock solid, super performant (yes not bleeding edge but I don't need bleeding edge). Merry Christmas and my best wishes for a Wonderful New Year to you all @ the Mench house!

You're welcome. Thanks for the kind words, I really appreciate it. Next time I highlight the i3 wm in a video, I will demonstrate how to say it like Awesome lol. Debian is great too. If I ever leave Arch, I will go with Debian (pure Debian not a distro based on it). It's a while since I made a video on it. I was kind of waiting for Debian 13, but that could be another 6 months or longer. I wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Regards from Canada.

Sounds real. I went thru the systemd/upstart transition. Things got disjointed. Now xorg is dyiing slowly. Not directly blaming Awesome. I would love it if Awesome started into Wayland. I'm basically giving in, running KDE Wayland on Endeavour... but ya, I want Awesome transitioned.

I think it's going to be another 5 to 10 years before everything is moved to Wayland. But I might be wrong.

oh is THAT why I've been having problems with power management recently? Sleep and waking from sleep is now a crapshoot as to whether I get a screen freeze.

    • @linuxmench2118

I'm not sure. I always programmed the Xfce Power Manager to never put my computers to sleep and to never turn off the screen. This stopped working after the large update on Sunday. If you follow the advice in the video, it will stop your screen from going off: dpms stands for display power management signaling. Follow the advice in my video to see if it works for you. However, you should disable or uninstall your power manager. My computers never go to sleep, which is different from the screen going black. Some people want their Linux computers going to sleep in order to save energy or to put less stress on the hard drive when not in use. I think it might be a common problem for Linux computers to freeze after waking up. I think that is a different issue from the kernel causing your display to automatically go blank after 10 minutes.

ah i didn't know this, but im not using xfce as i usually would. im only using openbox/awesomwm but i generally always turn off the sleep and screen saver as soon as i install my DE, cause its very annoying. but i also have a bash script that i autostart, for xset s off and xset -dpms so that it never turns the screen off in awesomewm.

Ever since I got my laptop, I have tried twice to get Arch Linux working but for some god damn reason it just refuses to go to sleep. The whole computer just stays on and battery drains like normal. After several days of troubleshooting, I just gave up and currently I am running PopOS! and it seems to work just fine (except the bluetooth driver)

When running Arch, what WM or DE were you using? Different desktops come with different utilities for power management. A different desktop may have solved your power mangment problem. I would say the top 3 (not necessarily in this order) are Gnome, Cinnamon, and Kde Plasma. On the other hand, I'm glad PopOS is working for you. Is your new laptop the latest and greatest on the market? Was the Bluetooth working in Arch? Is your Bluetooth driver recently on the market? It's possible PopOS is running an older kernel that doesn't support your Bluetooth driver. However, I'm just guessing.

@@linuxmench2118 I was trying to use XFCE on archlinux. Now that I think about it, I only tried GNOME with PopOS! I only tried XFCE with manjaro, mint, and arch. Maybe I should try using GNOM with archlinux and it may solve my issue? idk whether my laptop is the latest or not because it was provided by my college.

Try Arch Linux with Gnome. I think it may work.

As for POWER MANAGEMENT and SCREENSAVER - isn't the key ingredient here - IDLE or INACTIVITY??
Does RUNNING A VIDEO - qualify? Absolutely NOT!

I agree with you. This is the first time I experienced this problem and it was right after 136 packages were updated; obviously, there was some conflict. However, disabling it at the command line worked for me.

With my hyprland wm on arch the update broke the wallpaper app waypaper with swww and the waybar. The fix was to rebuild the python libraries as the update included new python module updates. All is well now.

I kind of lied. I once installed it in a VM, but it wouldn't load. I think it may have something to do with my gpu, but I'm not sure.

Do you HAVE TO update Arch when it tells you new versions are available?
Or, can you just leave WELL ENOUGH, GOOD ENOUGH alone?
IOW, if your system works, and you like it as it is, why not just LET IT CONTINUE WORKING?!

    • @linuxmench2118
      @linuxmench2118  19 днів тому +2

You have a point: if it ain't broke, don't fix it. However, it's important to install OS security updates and web browser updates. But apps don't need to be updated to the latest and greatest. In my Pacman config file, I have a line for it to ignore updating several apps because the latest ones are not working properly in my system. I'm not sure if there's a way to program it to ignore everything expect the kernel and web browser, or if it's prudent to do such a thing. If one is looking for greater stability with less updates, running Debian would be the better choice.

@@linuxmench2118 Don't get me wrong - you can still use an Arch variant, and use your ideas without going to Debian.
