  • Imam Haron’s BILAL: Let them hear, let them listen!
    Memoir/Biography/Political/History
    By: Fatima Galant Abrahams
With Foreword by Imam Mogamad Isma-eel Davids
    BASED ON A TRUE STORY
In this deep, emotional & intimate memoir, Hajji Abduraghmaan “Pinkie” Galant recalls & unfolds events from his childhood shared with his beloved teacher, Ash- Shaheed Imam Abdullah Haron, more than half a century ago, and brings to life a rich and evocative tale. The late Imam Abdullah Haron left behind a major legacy which this book seeks to highlight and honor.
This is not only a heartfelt tribute to a man who was once his religious leader and teacher, but also a dedication to a loving and humble man; a dear family friend, who was well-loved by his whole community.
Pinkie takes a trip down memory lane and comes face-to-face with his fears and finally able to confront his personal struggles and challenges as he recalls precious, as well as painful memories of the 1960s, growing up in Draper Straat, Claremont as a student of the late Imam, alongside his older brothers (Osman, the late Mohammad Yusuf who was better known as “Baaba”, Mogamad Salie, Ismail (The Voice), Faried (golden boy), Yunus, Abdul Aziz better known as “Ajoe” and only sister, Asa Galant Moos); Living under the shadow of police brutality and apartheid laws, as people went about their daily lives.
Then in May 1969, Imam Haron was arrested by the notorious national security branch for his resistance to injustice and apartheid laws. He was also accused of socially and financially assisting the townships that were worst affected by racism. The Imam was incarcerated for 123 days without charge, in isolation he was brutally tortured and killed later in September of that year.
This is however ultimately a story of courage and hope from a man whose light still shines bright today.
