A reminder that you do not have a moral obligation to live green, if it’s out of your means then there is nothing you can do. Non sustainable options are MUCH cheaper so let’s never shame anyone who uses them ☺️
She’s not. But people like me want to learn more and how to be more eco friendly. She has options for people who can’t always afford it.
I‘m absolutely going to shame people who have the money but still use them.
If you can’t afford sustainable products, you probably don’t have the money to harm the environment anyway. People who fly regularly, who own more cars and clothes than they need to, who throw lavish, wasteful parties absolutely have a responsibility to live and spend more sustainably. When we say „the average person isn’t responsible“ that’s not entirely true. Everyone above lower middle class has a responsibility to dial back imo.
I have friends who talk sustainability but will fly intercontinental multiple times a year. Screw that.
Companies and upper classes need to do their part.
Not only that but individual contributions cannot change the world in any discernible way. Big companies pollute the planet. Wealth hoarders pollute the planet.
I am 13y/o going on 14 (living in France) and I am trying to be eco friendly. Sadly, since I don't really choose what we buy in the house and my parents do not always have the money to buy eco friendly products because they are very expensive sadly.. But I bought a bamboo toothbrush with my money and I use a reusable makeup wipe that I rinse after each use. I am taking small steps but you are my goal!
When I lived with my parents, it was extremely tough to be sustainable. The few things I did were use a reusable water bottle, shop second hand clothing, and consume less.
Step by step. There is NO shame in not being able to afford things. I’d recommend looking into doing things yourself or upsycling! :)
I think that's awesome! Being eco-friendly is just about trying your best and doing whatever you can do for the environment.
Just so everyone knows, in the actual underwear section of target There are Haines Period Underwear that come in a pack of three for way less money than the ones in the menstrual isles.
😅 I'm gonna point out once again. Bamboo is actually more environmentally detrimental to the environment than actual practice. It produces a lot more greenhouse effects and takes away from the habitats of animals in their food. Which you should be going for is Every cycle, plastic toothbrush which they do make.. That everything is black & white. There is Gray involved in some of this sustainable plastic waste that you, some of these products that don't have plastic in it affects the environment 10 times more thand their counterparts. Research is more involved. And where do the products come from? And how they sustainably get them sometimes, then use child labor to get some of your products that are sustainable. Buying locally uses items and stuff. That doesn't come from far away. Places are actually more sustainable. Then, living a 0 plastic free life.
Bamboo is really effective at removing carbon from the atmosphere. AND is able to grow in areas where other plants can’t, which actually allows more plants and organisms to live in those areas. Plastic can only be recycled so many times before it just ends up thrown away. And most plastic doesn’t get recycled anyway. To say plastic is less environmentally damaging than a literal plant is… wrong
@@goose5268 So you're forgetting here that you have to ship bamboo to certain parts of the world that causes green ambitions. And you have to take land from the animals which causes deforestation. So bamboo is detrimental to the environment in many ways. Not to mention that the bristles are still plastic. And you have to have child labor to harvest a bamboo. So you keep on brushing your teeth with child labor taking away deforestation toothbrush and causing green emission in the air. Where you know you could just use a electric toothbrush and just change out. The heads which is less plastic than the whole entire toothbrush itself. Make a toothbrush that make sense. And do you research actually look up the stuff that you're trying to sprout about. That everything is black and white there are some grays to it.
@@Kiki.shannanwhat where is your plastic toothbrush is manufactured in? Where were the components of your electric toothbrush shipped from? Where were those metal components mined from? What are in the batteries of your toothbrush? Where those mined from? How are you assured that there's no child labor involved in any of those part of the manufacturing?
@heartears Considering most of the parts come from America in Canada. I don't think they do child labor. And considering i've had the same electric toothbrush for 7 years, go on 8 yr. Considering i've had tongue cancer and did a lot of research on toothbrushes. It's been pointed out by multiple environmentalists that bamboo
Toothbrushes are dentimental to the environment. Unfortunately, everything you buy has a dental hit to the environment. Unless you grow it. Or live completely independent from electricity water gas. You are still going to hurt the environment. It's how much of the environment you are going to hurt is the question. And since bamboo toothbrushes, you have to replace toothbrushes every so often. And where my electric one has been with me for almost 8 plus years. All I have to do is switch up the heads, which has minimum plastic. You will have to continuously ship out those bamboo toothbrushes. You would have to continuously add more farming lands if it becomes popular or there comes a demand for it. One of the reasons why I personally don't like her videos. She makes people feel like the choices that they make are not thought out. And she kind of shames you for not making switches. And where she doesn't weigh the pros and cons to both products. Fairly people are biased. They're going to pick the thing that they like the most. I am not gonna say I'm not biased, but I'm going to say that I like looking at both sides. I like to point out both sides of the pros and cons.. 1 day I'm gonna have to get rid of my electric toothbrush because it will break. What happens to the battery? What happens to the metal that's inside of it? What happens to the charger? These are all questions that are really good. But there are still questions that don't need to be answered today as in since. I'm continuously using my electric toothbrush. But as for someone who's going to throw away a bamboo one. And continuously buying it over and over again. And not to mention, she pointed out that the packaging comes in plastic. On top of the fact that the bristles are plastic. On top of the fact that it does deforestation. And it has to be shipped out internationally. And there is an issue where crates have actually fallen into the sea.. And cause environmental problems. There's a percentage of cargo that never makes it to America, and I can not remember it. I will tell you if I did. So it just doesn't make sense to say. You should switch over to bamboo toothbrushes when they both are equally not so great. But at least you know that most electric toothbrushes are made in america and canada. There is no need to ship overseas. And what's your hawaii, but I think they get those stuff Fly out to them.
The “hey humans” deodorant is my favorite! The one I have smells so good, it’s all cardboard and it doesn’t make me smell worse AND it doesn’t irritate my skin like most deodorants do. I highly recommend it.
Thank you. I'm allergic to aluminum and it's a pain trying to find aluminum free deodorant
Update: I accidentally left it in my car when the temps got high and it melted everywhere:(( I’m so sad but that’s completely my fault
Glass can be heavy and require more fossil fuels to transport. Sometimes recycled plastic is more sustainable
Yep, and not everyone has access to recycling facilities for glass so unless you plan to reuse the container plastic is often lower impact.
I'm slowly starting to transition toward a more sustainable lifestyle! One of the things that has helped me most is your saying "the plastic you have at home is more sustainable than buying something new" and that has helped me not give in to green washing so much!!
Something I have found doesn't work for me are natural toothpastes and deodorants, they're just not good for people who smell and in the case of toothpaste, it made my teeth even MORE sensitive. Also, I have to use an electric toothbrush due to dentist recommendation but I had switched to bamboo before that!
OK for those of us who don't live in the US, what the heck is a "zero waste body wash sheet"? Is it just a flannel? If so, why is it surprising that a store that also sells towels etc would stock them?
i think the one she is talking about is an individual soap sheet. so it disintegrates in the shower. we have them in Colombia, South America. they come in a back of 50 or 100 and lather really well and once u get the hang of it 1 sheet can last 2 showers depending how your shower is if u have somewhere semi dry to place it/if u have a window in your bathroom that can open
@@LL-iu3bi Huh, the more you know! Thanks :) I've never seen those here (UK)- it's either bar soaps or liquid soaps (which you can sometimes do refills or bring your own bottle for)
Hi, I got curious when you mentioned bamboo toothbrushes. Have you heard of miswak? Miswak is a teeth-cleaning twig made from the Salvadora persica tree. You basically chew on one end till the bristles form use it like a normal toothbrush. It also has antibacterial properties and other health benefits. As it comes from a tree it also doesn’t cause plastic waste.
Question for everyone: is it better or worse to buy greenwashed products? Like if the put some effort in, is it better that we use the slightly eco friendly option, or will it look like we are supporting green washing?
It depends on lots of things. Some things may be inaccessible except for online which has its own issues unless bought from a zero waste company directly. Monetary costs can also be a big difference. My rule of thumb is if its typically a one time purchase, get whats better for you - greenwashed or not. If its a regular purchase, try those that arent greenwashed. I.e. a scrubber vs toothpaste. A scrubber is not purchased as much as toothpaste, maybe every 6mo-1yr on the lenient side. Toothpaste might be every 2-3mo or less depending on the size
It kind of seems like you’re looking for greenwashed products, not actually sustainable ones. Are you looking into the production and manufacturing in addition to recycling? Are you taking into account how little plastic is recycled? What about resources used for production, like water, energy, etc for the raw materials? I got a bachelor’s in sustainability and even I don’t go around pretending to be an expert…
@@aj7887 she didnt, but she is encouraging people to consume greenwashed products under the false label that they're sustainable. There is no such thing as "zero waste" items from target
@@lemonierfroggie4904 but the ones she recommends are about as close to zero waste as the average consumer gets. She shows product that say themselves that they're zero waste. I'm also seeing her saying to think critically about what is sustainable vs. green wash. I just don't really see the negative here.
@@aj7887 I guess, but that doesn't really make sense because if she knew the difference between greenwashing & sustainable, she'd know bamboo is horrible for the environment
@@KoishiChan92 google "is bamboo bad for the enviroment?"

So helpful!! I do go to target for low waste cleaning products and that’s been very convenient. But I’ve found my tj maxx has quite a few goo options for zero waste and eco friendly products so I go there for my bamboo toothbrushes if I’m in a pinch!
Hey, I’ve seen your videos on UA-cam before and follow you, and I just wanna say how much I admire your work with looking out for the future, and earth, you‘re doing great!
Target is always my go-to for Simply Gum! 💜
Imagine driving to target in your car to make a video about zero waste products made in a factory. I think we are aiming our energy in the wrong direction. Pun intended
Like you said it's a process and it took you time to fully transition so hopefully in a few years your videos helping and inspiring people do the same thing that you're doing will be more noticeable in the world
my local target has toothpaste tablets and bamboo toothbrushes as well as refillable household cleaners! they def could be doing more but it’s a step in the right direction
Hi I was wondering if you could do a review on beeswax wraps? I understand if you don’t but I think it would be a good thing to talk about ❤
I love them! I personally have some and theyre awesome! You can make them at home too which is even cooler in my book. You just need scraps of fabric, dip them in bees wax and then let dry and youre golden!
I like the garnier reusable rounds for makeup removal. They work really well
I thought that hair mask was glass too and was so disappointed to find out it's not😭 reminds me of when I thought the container for nivea men cream was all metal when the bottom was metal coated in plastic and the top was metal coloured plastic.
Glass is actually very resource-intensive to produce and distribute. Unless you plan to reuse it thousands of times, it’s not necessarily the most sustainable.
Im a 17 year old french gal and I have trued living more sustainably since last year. I even got my mom to use laundry detergent sheets now! I stoped buying clothes from fast fashion(even if I had a very light consumption before hand) and I have learned to sew, crochet and knit so now if I want clothes I can literally make it myself! And thanks to you, shelby, Gittemary and sustainably vegan, you are helping me learn how to be even better and is making me want to go into environmental sciences! So thank you so much for inspiring me❤️
I don't think that laundry detergent sheets are really environmentally friendly the sheet is usually a plastic fiber.
@@apathybronsonnot all sheets are made equal it seems, because the ones I use dont

Tjmaxx has great bamboo tooth brushes with paper packaging 💕 and i also found very clean body soap with paper packaging 🥰
native is gender neutral lol. I would not label it “for men” if their marketing team hasn’t already done so 🤷
I live in Central Texas, where people really do not care about the environment at all. I shared my opinion on fireworks on the fourth of july and how they are horrible and i got called a tree hugger and hippie for caring about the environment
You went to Texas and lectured them about how to celebrate a patriotic holiday that they’ve celebrated for generations and you’re surprised you got called a name?

@@xowarrior actually there are MANY articles and studies on the impact of using fireworks! In my country they got banned for personal use due to it and now they are completely regulated (tho tbh I think we should evolve the custom to something better, less noisy and less risky)
I’ve actually gotten the Plus body wash sheets and I must say it’s very…interesting? They aren’t my favorite but not the most hated on my list. They just don’t sud up properly for me.
I use Tom’s because mint makes me feel sick and I never knew it was recyclable! I’ll check my tube and show my mom so we can start doing that!
Why body wash sheets over bar soap?
Please I need recommendations on greener sustainability items for when you first move to a new place
Ask friends and family if they have things they are going to get rid of. They can sell them to you for very cheap of even gift it to you. Make a list of the minimum things you need and evaluate what you already have to determine how many you have to thrift or shop new. Some things will have to be new and plastic probably but you can be critical about your purchases and choose things that you can use long term.
If you think about it, the things that are “expensive” to do equal friendly, balance out with the things that are actually cheaper to do that are eco friendly 🤷🏻♀️ yes some things are cheaper but it’s all about knowing how to do things
Honestly, where we live, W.M. has a lot more eco-friendly options than Target. Plus the two Target stores accessible to us are always in a a shambles, and it takes at least a half hour to get through the registers at the front. I don't know how people do it.
Trying to live zero waste really does very very very little for the environment. It’s a drop in the ocean of the large corporations that pollute the Earth. It just makes you feel better about yourself
Even if it is just for herself, that's ok. What's wrong with making yourself happy? Besides, if everyone who thought that"one person won't make a difference" did said-thing along with those already doing it feel like maybe it would, if even just a tiny one. :)
@@maddieames1234 Never said it was a bad thing, do what you do. Just understand that not everything is as it seems, they send a good amount of “recycling” to landfills or to poor counties. @@april_btw if people buy less and less plastic companies aregonna produce less and less plastic, so no she isnt doing just to make herself feel better and honestly she probably has a lot less health issues thanks to that
@@genialist4670 But you see it’s not just plastic and packaging. It’s the materials and waste created of the production of everything. One example is maybe wood products, or bamboo products. They might seem better for the environment but think about production and transportation it took to get them there. No products are really zero waste, unless you’re making them yourself from scratch
Where I live, the plastic is recyclable too. Any plastic packaging that isn't black

From personal experience, if you have an IUD, menstrual discs are a safer, reusable option than menstrual cups. This is coming from someone who accidently didn't release the suction well enough and accidently dislocated her own IUD and had to get it removed and replaced with a new one.

I’m In a boarding school and there’s a Woolies literally around the corner and there’s bamboo tooth brush and this amazing Australian 0 waste deodorant brand
They had bamboo toothbrushes but I'm guessing they didn't sell well because they went clearance quick. Same with the magnetic makeup.
Do u have a zero waste cleaning routine because I can’t find any and I’m looking to transition to this lifestyle
I don't recommend the Native deodorant in the cardboard packaging. Love Native's deodorant as a whole but the packaging did not work. It's basically a push pop that does not go back down and after a while I was unable to fit the lid back on from the cardboard becoming squished.
They used to have hate humans toothpaste in an aluminum tube and humans lotion in an aluminum bottle but haven't been able to find either one in a while now. It's a real shame that that didn't go better. That company was started by Jada pinkett Smith and her son I think.
It doesn’t matter what brown cardboard packaging you buy, it will not make a difference. The bulk of waste is by mega corporations, not the everyday person in their home.
The majority of beauty products are vegan without even trying. The 2 main non-vegan ingredients are beeswax and carmine and unless the beauty company can prove that their vegan alternative waxes are 100% ethically sourced then they are not cruelty free due to the amount of humans who suffer in the production of these waxes and pigments which are also not environmentally friendly due to the chemicals used for extraction nor are they sustainable due to the lack of forward thinking.
Also, check the ingredients, half of these new products have plastics within the formula to make them last longer.
What do you do for band-aid alts? I work with all sorts of animals and often get small but deep cuts and band-aids are what I normally use. Plus, they're handy in general.
Can we count recyclable plastics as zero waste? Since only a small percent of all plastics are ever recycled, I would think not.
none of that is zero waste though… i clicked expecting bulk items lol
7/10 definitely I heard u say dollar tree has bamboo to the brushes???? What???
I thought you were going to say that the mascara was the color green 😂
I work at lush you should pop into ur local one!
Is it true that it’s no longer profitable to recycle? Is cardboard/recycling still eco friendly?
At least the glass. The companies in my area won’t take glass because it cost them too much money to recycle them.
I wish there was aluminum base Recyclable deodorant I have legit found Zero. My skin is supper sensitive and natural deodorant has baking soda or other exfoliants or citrus that causes my armpits to burn and if it has baking soda it will swell and I can't lower my arms
the rating depends on what your priorities are when you go shopping at target but as a person who lives in europe and knows how hard it is to avoid plastic...still I think thats just very poor selection of (more) sustainable products...
honestly id give it 3/10
Youre super pretty
I literally haven't been in a target in over a year 💀
Awesome! I wish I could say that about my local blue top consumer product store.
get yourself a bar of cerave face wash. they don’t advertise it as zero waste but it literally is. it only comes in a recyclable box.
kinda worried about diva cups any recommendations for someone that wants to start using one
flex cups are more expensive (i think) but they’re totally worth it to me. Definitely look into those. If you’re worried about removing them those are super easy
If you are benefiting from capitalism at all by this point, you are not zero waste. The only way to be zero waste would be to live off the grid in a cabin somewhere, grow your own food, ride bikes or walk everywhere, and compost EVERYTHING.
Even then you would still poop and pee, which are waste products.
It seems like Elf and Pacifica are the only true cruelty-free vegan drugstore makeup brands. The rest are able to claim they are while using loopholes in their wording (like conducting animal testing for their overseas markets).
Just make your own products. Homemade deodorant is better for you and super easy to make. Works better than aluminum based garbage anyways.
Hi, sorry to comment 2 months after you did, but do you have any particular/favourite instructions how to make one? I'd love to try :)
Do u have a zero waste period as well?
I do! I did a recent video on this if you wanna check it out: ua-cam.com/users/shortssUB4nX2rJi4?si=4mSi_1gHUuG8Ivny
I think body wash sheets are kinda ridiculous. Just buy bar soap? Cheaper, more uses and the vast majority are in cardboard packaging
There’s nothing wrong with the maybelline mascara because it’s still better than a regular one
If you want to see a retailer in Europe wich have zero waste options is DM.
I live in Croatia and go to DM too. I was surprised when I saw that they have oat milk concentrate for dilution, though in a tetrapack. But even that is better than most plant-based (not zero-waste because they do not exist) milk alternatives which are on Croatian shelves. I also noticed that they have domestic Croatian products that I couldn't find anywhere else and are zero waste, for example pads and cotton swabs. I noticed they have a wider range of products in Germany and maybe some other countries, but I don't mind the situation now, I found solid hair shampoo for my hair type and I am happy xD
In Russia we have bamboo toothbrushes in every market
