- Hey guys! I have a lot of DCS World players ask me what Sensor on their F-16C or F/A-18C to use in a given situation, and that is always a challenging question to answer especially with a system that isn't used all that often like the air to ground radar of the Hornet or Viper.
But this video should give you a good idea of the best use scenario for the brand new air to ground radar of the DCS F-16C Viper! I hope it helps you out!

Hey guys, I hope this gives you a good example of a scenario where your air to ground radar in your F-16C or F/A-18C will help you accomplish your mission! Sometimes it can be confusing trying to decide what sensor to use in the scenarios you may find yourself in.
Suggest you scale in much closer to 10 nm scale once in DSB2. Scale in this regard is the image scale size, not range from aircraft.

I somehow figured out how to use this before this tutorial came out.

Hey Spud, I would actually augment or redo this video showing that you can get a MUCH clearer picture by adjusting the scale to 10NM, as Wags and others have pointed out. What you showed right now is actually a pretty poor way of using the radar, since you skipped out on one of the most useful features it has.
You always do a good job explaining systems, whys and hows for DCS planes, so there are a lot of people who just watch your channel to learn. Those people might get frustrated with the A/G radar because you can actually miss your target by quite a lot if you keep the radar at this resolution.

i didn't even know planes could do this... i only learned earlier this year when the strike eagle was showcasing this capability alongside navflir... this stuff is nuts... even to a former muns troop...

One of the biggest advantages of the IDF is the use of drones for verious tasks like laser designation, target acquisition, EW jamming and more. i think DCS should really start implementing the use of drones as a complementary tool that can assist fighter jets get their jobs done. the times when fighters flew alone and did everything for themselves is long over
That is already something you can do in DCS but it is obviously going to depend on what the mission maker adds into the mission. I have personally made plenty of missions where I use drones as FAC/A and they work perfectly.
I know for a fact that the USAF has done all of that since the vietnam war.

So so so much to keep learning. 300 hours in game with 80% in f-18 and still learning more and more. Still want to learn a bunch more modules. Not to mention ah-64 soon! Sigh!!

Spud if you reduce the range on your radar when in dbs2 you can get a much better image
Great vid. Although, the 16 has no Sensor Management Switch. I think you mean Display Management Switch for modifying SOI in the 16. Just in case anyone is confused.
And TMS Forward doesn’t exist, I suppose he means TMS Up?

When you put the A2G radar down in to DBS2, and then freeze the image, is there no way to zoom in further or is that maximum zoom?
Good vid. I wish youd done a multiple target attack. Not sure if you can program targets at range like with mark points in the A10. Excuse my noobness :)

I found the quality of AG improves a lot with the altitude. Like at 6000ft an airstrip will be very blurry while at 20000ft it gets much sharper.

Yep. If you were stuck with such low details for the target, that would be a pretty good illustration for why the a2g radar haters claim it's always useless :P

Hey Spudknocker! just gotta ask it here because i cant seem to find any info online. for me when i get a lock with the ground radar on stationary planes + convert it into a mark point. the actual point or steerpoint that i created through the ground radar is misaligned with where its supposed to be. When I drop the bomb it goes off target to the right. Is this a current bug in beta or am I doing something wrong. Also, when I zoom in to DopplerSharpening 2 and shorten the azimuth to A3 or A1, the radar seems to slow down. As im seeing in videos, its supposed to speed up in these modes. any advice? tks

hey spudknocker. im trying to attatch to a good flying group. i know grim reapers is quite full but do you know of a good spot to attatch to for most realistic game play?
hey man love this vid, but I tried pulling this off and my bombs fall way off, it seems to me like the aiming point I set drifts till I launch. Any idea what I might be doing wrong? Also, once I set my point on the FCR it goes into freeze mode and can't get it out of there, the radar doesn't seem to lock onto the point I set, something weird I must be doing wrong. Thanks a lot!
I know this video is a couple years old but can you you slew a tpod to that point of interest you create with the A2G Radar?
I'm a bit confused. First, am I correct in assuming that the weapon used was GPS guided? Second, what indication did you have that you were in the Acceptable Launch Range telling you it was okay to release?
4 months late, but here we go:
Yes, he is using a JDAM type of weapon, which is GPS Guided.
He knows that it was okay for weapon release because of that tiny bar on the bottom right of the HUD, he gets it just in the middle to make sure it is okay to drop the bomb and not lose too much of its energy.
Anyway this mission can be posted for download? Would make great training for those of us with no mission editor skills.
Has this been released? I have DCS Steam version and the radar will display when I select A-G but there is no image of the ground or the sub categories on the right side. Keep up the good work Spud!
You need to be in the Open Beta version, click right on DCS in the library->properties->beta->and in the scroll down windows select open beta
@@Thedoctv Thank you so much, I guess I missed the memo when I went the Steam route that in order to get all of the features of the modules, you have to run them in Beta.
How much 2000 pound JDAMS or 500 pound GBUs an F-16 can carry and for comparison how it looks like for the F/A 18? I am an A-10C II pilot and want to expand my garage.
The F16C can carry (if I’m not wrong) at max of 4 2000lb JDAMs, but due to the amount of fuel the F16 has access to, it can only realistically carry 2 of those big boys.
500lb GBU12 or GBU38 JDAMs however, can be carried on 2*2 racks. (4 bombs total.)
Something the Viper can do better than the Hornet though is Mavericks, the Hornet can only carry 4 while the Viper can max out at 6 Mavs, plus 2 side bags and ECM if needed, not to mention the 2 AMRAAMs and 2 AIM9Xs you can carry along.

That's how radar works. Same with your A-A radar, which allows you to target bandits through clouds.

Clouds look great but I can’t view any details in the video. It’s always amazing to me how shadows can dim lights :)
So, does the AG radar feels better, worse or on pair with the one from the hornet? And does it allow to attack tank sized targets?
You are not really going to use the ground map mode to track tanks and attack them. It is really meant for larger, mostly static targets (or very large groups of targets). For individual vehicles (like tanks) that are on the move, you would have better luck with the Ground Moving Target mode.

The higher the better. If you‘re high the angle is higher so it‘s more of a top down view instead side view

Not on this release. Don't think A2G Radar actually generates a SPI yet...

Should be possible as long as they then can lock onto the targets, which requires clear view. So basically you'll set a SPI with the radar, the Mav slaves to that instead of taking it from the "teapot" and if it then catches something, Rifle! That gets particularly interesting with the upcoming GMT mode (Hornet has it already).
I don't care what anybody says. F-16C is the absolute king of DCS.
Soon to be dethroned by the AH-64 though :)

What is the purpose of freezing the radar?
So that the picture doesn't keep updating on you as your slewing the cursor, also there is a delay if you move it unfrozen because when you move the cursor it has to rebuild the picture as it will always recenter itself on the cursor.
@@jarhead1145 I don't have a proper understanding of how it works so I could very easily be wrong. When he freezes it and slews the cursor around, the image is moved around. Couldn't it just do that but also update the image that is being moved about like it normaly does. And I don't see how it updating is a problem, it would let you see any changes that happen.
@@epicgamer42069 See the DBS modes take longer to create an image, thus the delay. So if you move the cursor while unfrozen, it needs to recreate the whole thing again centered on your cursor. This is like a 1 second delay with each movement of the cursor. But if you freeze it, then there is no delay. Not saying it's impossible to do it without freezing but it's not intuitive.
you know you can zoom in further when in DBZ mode when just reducing the "range" way before you even reach that range to the target............this way you can aim much better

i reccomend 2000 pound bombs or bringing a ton of cbus to make sure they all die its really fun imo i also sometimes gun run for fun aswell
