As a kid, I always wished that the sword powerup which you get by collecting all rainbow drops and which is only available for the dark matter fight, could be an unlockable ability for the rest of the game because it always seemed so much more interesting than only having a subset of the most pedestrian abilities from Kirby's Adventure. I know it would break the game even more but still...

What I love about the Kirby series, you really can't think about a bad Kirby game. That's what I love about the charm of this series! I know that I'll always get something good out of it when I'm board!

The Animation of the abilities with the friends is so cute an charming.
Getting Kirby electricuted when Rick uses electricity or Kirby using the spike ability inside the fish while he is choking and poked from the inside look hilarious :D

I'm actually quite surprised that so many people think Kirby's Dreamland 2 is the best of the Kirby's Dreamland trio. I think it's a solid game but I'm pretty confident that the clear winner belongs to Kirby's Dreamland 3.

I was underwhelmed by KDL2 at the time because it relied on the animal friend combos to add variety to the special abilities, while Kirby's Adventure was overflowing with more interesting abilities. But considering this was on Gameboy, it's a decently large platforming adventure with some surprises and even a good puzzle in the form of the rainbow drops. This is the 3rd best early Kirby game (behind Adventure and Super Star).

I love flying abilities in games. In an era where games were very hard gamers were given an alternative path to play through a level but this was somewhat balanced out because you would also miss out on all of the scenery if you chose to fly which means it added variety in an era where most people replayed their games a lot due to affordability as kid at the time

Kirby 2 is an amazing classic and one of my favorite platformers ever! It's my favorite Kirby game and is high on my list of the all-time greats in the genre. That is my opinion, but regardless, even if you disagree, your complaint about being able to fly over the stages doesn't make any sense. That's not a bug, or poor design, or anything of the sort; that's an intentional feature of the series and they knew what they were doing with every level in this game. Kirby is a usually easy platformer series where you can fly. So, you can fly over the stage if you want, or engage with it if you want. That's part of the whole point of Kirby and the series in general. There are no design problems with Kirby 2's stages, they are designed exactly as they should be! Player choice, fun, and accessibility, that's what Kirby is about, and Kirby 2 nails that perfectly. Almost all of your complaints are non-issues that the game intentionally did a way you don't like, but you don't seem to realize that and keep acting like the game has design problems that it doesn't have! This made for pretty frustrating watching, as you keep misunderstanding what Kirby level and game design is all about. I think that it might have been better if you'd just said that you disagree with their choices in this series (letting players fly infinitely, etc.) and want a harder game instead, but that's not what Kirby is about, so that's not what the game is. This is a series about choice and accessibility. Do you want to play the easy way and just fly over the levels? Go ahead! Do you want a harder path on the ground? That's probably more fun, so you can do that too, but it's all up to you.
On the other hand, to agree with one thing you say, I have sometimes felt that Rick is a bit of a downgrade in this game, yes, because you can't fly. He has powers which make him worth using sometimes, but the 'friends' concept was new and you do see that here. Regardless, the friends are a great addition and I love that each one has a new variant of each power -- it gives the game a lot of variety, like a predecessor to what Kirby 64 did with its power-combining feature.
Also, while it is true that it takes a bit of practice to learn what power breaks each of the types of walls, with only seven powers and seven gems to collect, it's not too much of an issue; it does not take too long to figure out which is which. A game with a much bigger problem here is Kirby 64, which has a whole lot more items you need, hidden behind a whole lot more different types of walls, again with no guide hints telling you which power to use on which apart from their color. Figuring this out for seven rainbow drops was a fun challenge. Figuring that out for a whole lot of crystal shards? That was too much and not worth the effort, I never got the good ending in Kirby 64. If you want challenge from a Kirby platformer that brought it, but in a way that I didn't find very fun. I like Kirby 2 a lot more.

I loved this game. The added puzzle and animal/weapon combination added another layer to the fun, yet rather basic game prior to it. Playing on the Super Game Boy is definitely the way to go.
The final puzzle making you go through a bunch of doors using the different capture abilities was really tedious, but rewarding.
I haven't played through many of the other games yet, so it's hard to tell if it would be my favorite or not. I remember it being a fun play through, and that's what counts.
    Nice review!

I know you only planned on doing the Dreamland trilogy, but Kirby 64 is basically Dreamland 4 (also Dreamland 2, 3, and 64 are usually referred to as "The Dark Matter Trilogy") you don't have to, but it would make me happy

I find some of the criticism unfair, like the saying it's bad you can fly over some challenging sections. The main idea of Kirby is that while there is some challenge for the hardcore player such as you and me, it's optional so young kids and casual players can beat the game too. That's why it is not as tightly designed as the original SMB, it is a different kind of game, offering more options on how to play it - bad ending for casual, good for hardcore. It is the same mentality as modern games allowing player to skip a level, except implemented seamlessly. Critique like this, is what caused developers to switch to that method - people simply did not get that they had options, causing the developers to make it more obvious.

Oooooh nooooo, your opinion on gaming is a bad match for Kirby. The option to play any way you want, easy or difficult, your'e gonna HATE in later games, as the difficulty is something decided by the player instead of forced upon you by the game. But, that's... not a bad thing? Maybe? The fun of using an ability that you choose and beating the game your own way is really fun!!! I hope maybe you can consider that this time... I'm afraid of your Kirby Super Star review! Hahah! Either way, glad you like the series so far.
