  • IJN Battleship HYUGA Wreck at Kure after World War II
    24 July 1945:
At Nasake-jima, south of Kure. From 0915 to 1630, about 200 aircraft of Vice Admiral (later Admiral) John S. McCain's Task Force 38's USS ESSEX (CV-9), TICONDEROGA (CV-14), RANDOLPH (CV-15), HANCOCK (CV-19), MONTEREY (CVL-26) and BATAAN (CVL-29) attack the Kure area. About 50 aircraft including SB2C "Helldiver" dive-bombers of TICONDEROGA's Air Group 87 and other groups attack the HYUGA. Ten bomb hits and many near misses open the HYUGA's seams and she takes on tons of water. One of the direct hits blows the anchor deck apart. Three others hit the bridge and demolish the right side of the conning tower. Rear Admiral (Vice Admiral posthumously) Kusakawa is killed on the bridge.
Sunk: The HYUGA's crew runs the ship aground in shallow waters at 34-10N, 132-33E.

Speaking of converting a BB into a CV, the Shinano was the best attempt at this. The Shinano had a omplete Yamoto-grade (well, almost) BB armoured belt. The BB deck had its full Yamato armour. (unfortunately, I do not thing think the flight deck was armoured like the US Midway series CVAs). Too bad the Shinano was sunk before it was even battle ready. Well, Japan didnt even have any competent pilots at that time of the war anyways.

Yes, if anything, their 14in broadsides would not have been sacrificed. Though the Japanese 14in guns were inferior to the Yamato 18in guns, and even the Nagato's 16in guns, the number of barrels of the Ise and Hyuga prior to their hybrid incarnations would have tremendous in a line of battle in a conventional BB to BB surface engagement.

You seem to be proud of that, stay that way, make sure your children learn to be proud of it, men who served on ships like this no matter who they fought for need to be remembered.

Actually, the only reason they lost all of their planes was because of the lack of pilots.

My Dad bombed this ship on July 24, 1945. He was a Corsair pilot with VBF-1 aboard the USS Bennington (CV-20). He received the Navy Cross and Air Medal for his actions.

    I agree.
The Japanese must have been crazy to have mutilated these 2 wonderful ships.
They were desinged to hold 22 planes but because of production shortages, Hyuga never carried a full load.
Ise never even got to be used on a mission as an "aircraft carrier" because her planes were drafted to land bases and she was used a pure battleship.
These ships were no worse than the highly successful British Queen Elizabeths.
There was no need for Japan to disfigure them.
    Thanks

The IJN was desperate after Midway, tried to combine a BB with aCV,poor Ise is neither, couldn't land aircraft,Q position turrets have such limited arches of fire, for all puposes broadside down to predreadnought.Big slow target, once worlds better BB's
