Latecomer, here! I just made the weave poles and fall away jump for just about $25 (the PVC cutters at Home Depot were over $20, though). Thanks for the guidance! I also spray painted the weave poles alternating colors (included in the price). We're not looking to compete, but we're already having great fun with it!
PVC cutter should cost $5. You can cut PVC with anything especially for this project.

The standard distance for weaves is 24" apart. May want to update your Information for people who are making them more recently :) it seems small but it's a big difference to the dog. :) Also the jumps shouldn't be as tall as you ;) the highest jump height for all agility organizations is 24inches now too. And the minimum is anywhere from 4-8".
Good to know!!
What if your dog is fat and can’t fit through
@@peightinmarie5545 put him on a diet and try again!
I was gonna say man those jumps are very high!

The tire jump is very dangerous as it does not break away
Not true. The apparatus will tip if it is hit. No sharp edges.
Tinthia Clemant doesn’t matter, they can still get caught in it I t have to at least open at the bottom or on bottom and top like in Europe.

P.S. Sorry, the camera person was doing it as a favor to me, and all I had was a manual control lens that the person had never used anything like before. It was also a very unforgiving focal length. For what I was asking of them, I thought they did pretty good with no prior training or notice.
Wonderful! Exactly what I was looking for. You probably already know this but I didn’t when my Aussie was a baby, but NO jumping until at least 1 year of age because of the growth plates in their legs. So darn cute! 💕

Great video, but I must say damn, your PVC is cheap.
Local Canadian Home Depot 1/2" PVC pipe works out to $0.83/ft. So for 100" that's $83. (no discount the more you buy either)
Most fittings are also over $1...
Damn you Canada. Damn you!
That was the first thing that came to mind for me also! Here its $10 for a mtr ( or 3 foot), i cant find fittings under $10 each either (though i imagine they are). Cost me $120 for a full set ordered online of no name agility equipment delivered, and ill build the platforms/ramps etc from wood
I imagine its a good idea to use wooden dowels for the weave poles as a cheap option, just spike them into the ground
USA NC $1.72 for 10'
Here in Kentucky, I can by a 10' stick for about $2.18.
At menards I get 10 foot, 1/2 inch pvc for 1.30$ each. And fittings are .25 cents each
Everything in Canada is expensive. That's how you get "free" healthcare. 🤣🇨🇦🍺
Dude, this is still my favorite video on UA-cam. I recommend this video to SO MANY of my clients looking for easy for-fun agility equipment. You rock. You deserve a medal.

this really works especially in lockdown, my puppy missing puppy school training
This video is great, just in case someone doesn’t realize. A lot of this stuff is just a bit more than $50 cause of inflation. Still way better of a deal then buying one.
Does anyone know what diameter of PVC pipe he is using?
This is awesome!! I just got an Australian Shepherd pup, and he has so much energy!! i can't wait to build these and start working with him! Thank yo!!
If he is a puppy please dont do weave poles and jumps! Weave can ruin his spine and jumps can ruin his joints, If hes past 18 months then go on ahead!!! But if hes uner 18 months i do not suggest

why the heck would it be demonetized ? its a great video and very informative
We have a new Dog Park, here in Winslow, AZ and I'm going to get a couple of us together to build this equipment, so people can bring their dogs to the dog park, get involved and have fun! Thank you, so much for this information! I put in a complete sprinkler system, in Florida, with PVC pipe, so I'm sure I can master this one! Ha Ha

I love these ideas! But I seriously hope that you don't plan on competing with Siri. She's clearly very young. Which means she shouldn't jump more than her ankles, and shouldn't be weaving. Just needed to express my concern for Siri's safety.
+DogWhim Not to worry, Siri will not be a competition dog. We just use them periodically to give her something else to do. She still is bad with weave poles (doesn't seem to get the concept). She is about 8 months now, and still only jumps about 18 inches (she can just about walk over the 1 foot mark).
Thank you for bringing this up I was also very concerned for little Siri since I'm pretty sure they aren't supposed to do the high impact stuff until they are 1.5 or 2 years (joint health and all) Also was a little miffed at the one foot comment as the owner of a younger dog and a doxie mix I won't let either of them go higher than 8 inches until they are closer to competition level.
+Bearlee Survivin Since these are not parts that have been pre-made, you can alter the builds to suit whatever height(s) you desire. With the parts I used, the minimum change of height would be about 2 inches, and the lowest height possible would be about 1 inch.
as a corgi owner I was miffed too!
XAgilityDogsX so what would be optimum age to start training dobbie for example...my dobbie is abt 10 months old and she is already crazy for freezbie
Wow that's awesome! Was it all your idea? Great video! Great dog!
Mariana Amaral I looked up dimensions of some official equipment, but the actual build instructions I came up with based on what I could find in the store
wow that's great! Thanks for sharing that with us!

Can you write the material list out?
so, not sure where you are, probly in the US somewhere ......Canadian prices for PVC must be significantly more expensive because I just did the online shopping for materials for JUST the adjustable jump with fall-away bar and materials came out to $108.34 The PVC pipes are at Lowes for $5.86 (each 10' length) the t-joints are 2.29 EA and the end caps are 2.49 ea. Not sure where you are getting 17 feet of PVC piping for $3.49 but even at Home Depot Canada I could not find any PVC piping for that cheap PER 10 foot length.

Great job! Thanks for the tutorial. We are heating and ac folks with lots of pvc for the taking! You've thought it through and all we have to do is make it! Your dog is adorable!

P.S. the hoop is really just another kind of bar jump, so you probably don't need it. The only possible way to make a weave I can think of off the top of my head is by making the fall-away bar jump, but connect the two sides using a pipe along the ground instead of a foot off the ground. Then, run another pole along the ground off one of the ends that ends in a joint similar to one of the ends of the weave pole. Leave the top of that joint open, and don't put any end caps on the fall-away bar. When you want it to be a jump, you put the fall-away bar on the pipe ends. When you want it to be a weave, instead of resting the fall-away bar on the pipe ends, you attach it to the joint that you built off one of the ends. This would result in a 3 pole weave. Maybe not the best, and might look a little janky, but it should work for what it is. This should be pretty to do, but you will have to create your own measurements.
By all means tho, I hope you make a cool, compact version of this. If you do, share it here for other people to see! : merelytheories.blogspot.com/2021/06/how-can-you-build-dog-agility-course.html

These are awesome, thanks heaps! I've seen some home-made ones around and was thinking of making some so I'll take your advice into consideration!
I had a couple of comments, though, which I hope you won't mind...
1: With regard to the weaves, other than the distance, which @RueAgility already covered, it's important to have the support legs in the middle of the weaves off-set so that they're on the other side of where your dog is going to be running. Dogs always enter from the right side of the first weave (if you're standing at the end, looking down the row of weaves, they enter from the right, in front of the first pole), so this will let you work out where the stability legs should extend. If you look at official weaves (type 'Crufts dog agility' into youtube and you'll find some awesome examples) you'll see that the dog always runs through the side where there aren't any legs, otherwise, they can slip or trip and really hurt themselves.
2: Someone else mentioned (and was pilloried for mentioning) you should be very careful having a puppy do anything but simple and small stuff until it's at least a year old, and two years for larger dogs. We have a border collie (almost the same breed as your Aussie...) and waited until she was 2yo to start training agility, then, before starting, we had her hips x-rayed and discovered that she should NEVER do agility as she has horrible hips. And, before you think it's poor breeding, she was bought from one of the best breeders in Australia, both parents and grandparents were hip-scored very low and previous pups from the same mating were hip-scored very low too. She has what her vet called 'throw-back hips', as in, hips that have no basis in genetics (or which could never be predicted by looking at the genetics of their ancestors).
We've come to terms with never being able to do agility with her (even though she was specifically bought to do agility with) and she's now titled in Rally Obedience and 75% of her way to a show championship title.
Anyway, it's your puppy, I'm sure you'll do what you believe to be best for it, but, it might be worth discussing this issue with a vet knowledgeable in treating dogs who do sports and agility type activities. Good luck with it, I look forward to more videos like this one!

P.S. not to worry, the bars were lowered (with a simple cut) so she was basically just walking over them, and never more than a slow trot through the poles. The connectors to create off set weave poles are surprisingly extremely hard to find. I guess they aren't common or needed in actual piping applications, so the connectors just don't seem to exist (at least where I looked for them)
hula hoop would work
Genius!!!!!
Thanks
My Jack Russell Mix jumps at as lower height than 12", and there's no reason he shouldn't do agility. He loves it. Before anyone says anything I know I can adjust directions. I've not got my nose out of joint. Just pointing out that 12" isn't the lowest height. Thanks for the video. This was extremely helpful.
Just made this! About $15 more than these older estimates. I am VERY please. Easy to put together. Cant wait to train

1/4 of the way through this video I said "my favorite video ever!"
Exactly what I was looking for at exactly the right time. 2 Shelties at 1 and 2 years old they need stimulation and I need exercise so it's a win win.
I'm writing all this down taking it to the hardware store and building some today. Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for posting this diy agility course especially with all the dimensions and parts included. I'm going to make a course for exercise for our dogs. Hopefully they'll like it lol
This is fantastic, thanks! This video is six years old- how did your dog do with learning agility?
Well done. I'm not there with my pup yet (a two year-old adoptee English Springer Spaniel wild-child with NO early training), but she's keen and your ideas for agility equipment once she's mastered general commands are great. Thanks

Great tutorial video! Thank you, this DIY is far better than the sets that they offer online, which can go from $60 (looks cheap) to the high $9K. Will definitely try this for my GS. God bless.

for Australians total cost will be $120 if you buy everything at bunnings so work out to be $40 each plus you have to buy a pipe cutter, so NOT WORTH it. Just buy online cost around $30 for each

FYI I just made the dog hurdle (with all the height levels) for around $50 Canadian! I didn't purchase the cutter but I was able to cut through the PVC with a simple saw. The T-joints were the most expensive (almost $2) but I could have saved on the cost by having less heights. Surprisingly the most time consuming part was removing the sticky barcode labels on the pieces :P

I'd love to make these, but the sizes seem to large for a chihuahua.

P.S. all the sizes are user adjustable. You can reduce all measurements, and even overall dimensions, as you see fit :)
Loved the video, but went out to purchase PVC and the pipes at 10 feet were $13+ and just one connector was $2 . I know still cheaper but still more expensive than I thought it was going to be. Maybe was cheaper 4 years ago. ☹️

P.S. Sorry if the prices have changes :/ Sometimes there are sales, or you can try to look for bulk prices online. Mine had a discounted price if I bought 100 ft.
Some good ideas here but note that in UK competition regs the height of the hurdle for each height must be as follows:
large dogs - 60 cm
intermediate dogs - 50 cm
medium dogs - 40 cm
small dogs - 30 cm
Width: 1.2 m minimum.
And those are the max - train at lower heights than these to begin with!
Also note that the jump poles only displace in one direction the way you've built it so you can't safely take the jump from both directions.
A better solution would be to buy some jump cups like these
www.jump4joyagility.co.uk/dog-agility-jump-cups-small
It will add to the cost but I think its worth it

REVERSE 1 side of the jump, so it will break away from either direction. If they're on the same side of the pole it can't break away.

P.S. That's not a bad idea. But if they get caught on the side that is up against the pole, it may not break away fast enough. However, I'm sure there is a way to improve all parts of this build, and that is not a bad idea. In the new video, there is a link to a blog that has all of this stuff in it. It might be a really neat place to post an idea like this so that others can see it.
Amazing! But if your dog is not past the age of 18 months please dont jump her or do weave poles! weave poles will mess up her spine and jumps will ruin her joints!!

P.S. not to worry. She did nothing of impact. Poles were lowered (simple cut) so she basically just walked over them, and never more than a slow trot through the poles.

P.S. Yes, should be plenty big for pretty much every dog except maybe the most giant. I think I over-estimated to make sure it wasn't too small haha.
thanks for the video. I noticed your pup is about the same age as my Aussie 17 weeks. My trainer scolded me for even trying to get her going on a agility course because joint issues as they age if started too young, before a year. I have only been teaching my aussie pup to weave. After she's a year ill start her on small jumping then move up. Your pup is adorable!

Just so you know at around 3:40 you said that if they cannot jump 12” then they should not be doing agility. That is a little mean to handlers who jump 8 or 4”. Also there is not a competition that will jump more then 24” usually and yours is a lot more then that.

P.S. You're right, and the minimum jump height can be made to accommodate any size (we actually shortened ours some for while she was a pup). But I wanted it to also work for a high jump, which is another competition, normally with bigger dogs. They jump up over the bar, and land on like a very soft foam thing, sometimes on an elevated surface. We never ended up doing that one tho, so the bar never was used on the higher settings.
Just made this for my dog just to get some of his energy out and he LOVES it. It's his new favorite playtime ❤️ this is the best tutorial I've found for DIY agility equipment. Thank you so much for the breakdown in the description too! $100 and 1 day is all it takes to build one of each!

The list he provides says 1/2" diameter but in the video everything looks like it is 3/4" diameter.

P.S. If I remember correctly, PVC pipe measurements can sometimes be confusing. The measurement is the inside diameter, not the outside diameter. But I think on 1/2" PVC, the outside diameter is 3/4". So it always looks much bigger than what the measurement says (I think 3/4" looks like 1" outside diameter). It also makes it confusing for the connectors, because if you measure the hole, it's 3/4", but the connector fits a 1/2" pipe because it's measuring the inside diameter. I had to stand in the store for a while looking at everything before I could make sense of it all.

Great tutorial! Although I know your suppose to start out with the poles separated, is there a way you could do that? Like not the poles in a straight line for beginners.
Ella Yeh you know those reflective driveway markers people have to mark their driveways in the snow? I would suggest using those to start since you can stab them into the ground at an angle. You could upgrade to the pvc pipes after your dog has learned?
Lydia Savitt Hi, I live in Florida so I don’t have a clue what driveway markers for snow look like, could you describe a little more?

@@flyerone If you look in a hardware store or online for "in ground reflectors" or something like that, you'll probably find them. Also, you could just use and thin, rigid thing in the ground: tent poles, sticks, dowel rods, etc.

I know this an old video, but for the jump pole, you want to turn the connectors third leg on the inside and cut of to the top part. Then you can lay the pole directly on the cut-off parts of the connectors. This way you can create a jump that can be safely jumped from both sides :-)

I know you left this comment a long time ago, but I just wanted to let you know that this channel has been demonetized, so I'm moving the video to a new location: ua-cam.com/video/XOvOp_T0cdo/v-deo.html . If it's not too much trouble, subscribing and leaving a comment there also would help me remonetize the video, and make sure it is able to be found by others trying to build agility equipment, since this old one will be coming down soon.

This is awesome! Great job putting this video together. My husband cut the pieces for me and I put all together in about 1.5 hrs. Can't wait to get started. Thanks so much for sharing!
