My favorite aspect of this shoe is the walk ability. My riding area is a mix of pavement, dirt and gravel and this shoe is great for walking around rough stuff. Also no longer slip when walking into a cafe after a ride

Wow, what a great looking shoe! This is my second pair. The first pair is leather and has been with me for about 30,000 miles. It shows no signs of giving up either. I am hoping this pair will last just as long.

MX238 & MX238 Gravel have 2 big differentiators. The rubber sole & protection panels on the upper. The MX238 Gravel version's sole is more minimal/lighter weight and the upper has fewer protective panels like the CX238 Road shoes (a road shoe with minimal rubber tread). The normal MX238 has a more robust rubber sole for more grip and protection when off the bike along with a protective toe panel and abrasion resistant panels at the side of the heels. Both versions are available in Leather or Microfiber upper material options.

Was just coming here to say this. I will add, that all Lake MX and CX shoes used to be leather, they're now moving to some models being made with the Clarino faux leather, and I would assume, as they continue to replace the current models, soon they all will be Clarino, as a cost savings measure.
Likewise, the rubber soles on these newer model MX shoes are different, they cover the entire sole instead of being in two pieces, and extend up and back a bit more at the heel. It's also a running change as they come out with new models, so not sure if they will also be incorporating this new sole onto the gravel shoe, or keep the old two piece rubber section for a bit of weight savings. The full rubber sole should offer more protection for the carbon sole as you're clomping around on rocks and other stuff on the mountain bike, whereas you might not be doing so much on the gravel bike.

Lake has added Clarino Microfiber as a material option in addition to the standard Leather options not for cost saving, but it is so that riders can have a choice for Leather or Microfiber (Non Leather), both materials have their pros/cons. The direction that Lake is moving is so that more Lake models come in the option of Leather or Microfiber (Non Leather) to allow for more choices for fit, function and riders material preference; as the difference in Leather vs. Microfiber (Non Leather) also effects the shoe's fit and function. A CX238 in Leather vs in Microfiber, the microfiber version feels tighter and has much less stretch as well as being lighter weight, depending on the rider this could be a desirable feel. There are still many specialty models in the Lake collection that only come in Leather or those that only come in Microfiber and those models are using those specific materials for the functionality of the products use. The Gravel version of the MX238 will continue with the minimal rubber for a lighter weight and as you stated Gravel riding does not need the thicker rubber protection.

@@hutch312 Sounds like you have the inside scoop. As you say, my Clarino Lake shoes(all from the 238 line) do feel a bit less forgiving, a bit more restrictive, not as slipper-like comfortable as my leather ones. Also, for an offroad shoe, the Clarino might be a better option, as it is probably more resistant to shrinking when it gets wet as opposed to genuine leather.

I have Lake CX238-X shoes and love them. The only thing I wish is that the BOA lace closest to your ankle was a little closer. It's almost as if Lake thought if your foot was wide, your ankles must be big too. I hope they can change that in the future, but the width of the shoes definitely help.

Maybe they thought if you had wide feet you would have cankles 🤣🤣

Received a pair of these this week but the sticker on the shoe (and notes in that bag) say you have to use a spacer with Time cleats/pedals. Do you have any awareness/ knowledge of that? It doesn't like the gap between cleat and ground would be more than 0.25mm-1mm but I don't want to invalidate the warranty on such an expensive shoe.

Hello Karl. I was not aware of the Time pedal spec. I don’t have any customers riding Time. This the first I’ve heard of an incompatibility issue. Thank you for bringing it to my attention.

Lake are the best shoes I've used. Its personal preference. The current color selection for MTB shoes is bland as hell though.. Bring back the orange scheme! :(
