Next Level Perfect Pitch (8 Year Old)

- In this video my son Dylan Perfect Pitch (Absolute Pitch) is tested on single notes, note pairs and complex polychords. I discovered Dylan had Perfect Pitch at age 3 and began teaching him music theory so he would understand exactly what he was hearing.

That is awesome that you recognized his talent and skill at such a young age. That is such a blessing that there is someone in his life who recognizes and encourages him in pursuing and developing that talent and skill. I met a similarly gifted young man when he was 3 yrs old. At the time, he was playing piano and organ to back up his mother and aunts who sang gospel music while his brother played drums.
Corey was barely big enough to see the keys yet somehow he played effortlessly as he watched his mother for cues and rarely even glanced at the keys. His hands knew those keys so well and his fingers danced skillfully across intervals and chords that seemed well beyond his yr old mind and body. At 5 he was competing in music contests and won a music talent contest at The Appolo theater. I knew the first time that I saw this kid that he had the talent, the skill but most of all the drive to do big things in music. As it turns out I was right about this exceptional kid. His story really is a great one, and you should contact him and hear it from Corey himself. But since that day all those years ago in an Air Force chapel at Plattsburgh AFB, NY that kid has played with some musical greats and has become an excellent and renowned musician himself. Corey Henry has played keyboards with Snarky Puppy and has played with Kirk Franklin, Donnie McKlurkin, Yolanda Adams, Michael McDonald, and Bruce Springsteen. He has done some independent stuff as well. If you are not already familiar with him, (which would not surprise me) Google him and check out his stuff. :-)
I loved hearing your son and look forward to where he takes his talent and skills and what dreams he may pursue. :-)

But that's exactly how you recognise perfect pitch in kids lol
When they hear a chord and say "oh its the dracula sound" or hear a note and remember a song that starts with it. But especially making names for sounds and chords and notes like you said. Once you recognise it as a parent all you really need to do is to sit them down and teach them proper names to replace tbe made up ones and add more obscure sounds to their repertuar and voila.
Thing is why tf would you do that lmao its pretty useless for 99% of people and pretty annoying to live with. Good luck trying to enjoy live music at a bar when you can hear every single instrument being slightly off tune and it drives you insane.

I think when the chords are played the kid has more difficulty remembering the names of the chords rather than figuring out the notes played.
yes definitely, because he naturally knows what is the sound, its the linking process of the sound and the “name” what takes some time, but with some more time dylan would definitely be able to instantly give the name
thats the difference between perfect and relative pitch, the first is being able to identify sounds naturally and the other is by comparing them to “memorized” samples
This is true. I have perfect pitch and this exact problem. Just hadn’t put it into words like that yet.
@@I_Am_The_Pataphysicist, relative pitch doesn't mean comparing what you hear to a memory. It means relating two things you are hearing right now.
Perfect/absolute pitch may hear a C and a G.
Relative pitch will hear neither a C nor a G, but will hear that the two unknown notes are a fifth apart.
@@I_Am_The_Pataphysicist perfect pitch is when you can "see" all the color. You know this one is blue, this is red. You can distinguish any color right away.
Relative pitch, you "see" everything in greyscale. You just know how much this one is darker (lower note) or brighter (higher note) than the other one. But you don't know what color it is.
Wow, that is an extra-ordinary mapping of tone to articulate expression.

Today, I discovered that my son associates colors with musical notes. I'm amazed!
Since he was (2,3) years old, I've seen that he arranges the crayons in the same order. Today I realized that this is the order of the piano application. So I asked what color the blue pencil is and he instantly replied that it was "A" and produces the exact sound.
That sounds like synesthesia plus perfect pitch, what a freaking combo lol

@@grogu9906 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I’m utterly impressed
Absolutely astonishing! Kid's going to be a great musician! 🤘
Just because he understands the names of sounds doesn't mean he'll be a musician. Knowing what sounds are and arranging them in amazing ways are different things. Many of the best musicians don't even understand music theory.
@@alukuhito It's not the fact he knows the name... It's the fact that he is able to break down a collective sound to specific notes. Something that a lot of Jazz players spend years and years training to do.
Also, if you watch the progression of most of 'the best' musicians, you'll see that aftet their popular times, they start to look to music theory to help widen their repertoire. Yes, there are some incredible musicians who have natural ability to just feel the instrument. But if you look at some people that are regarded as 'the best' in their discipline (Joe Bonamassa/Joe Satriani for guitar, /Buddy Rich/Neil Peart for drums), you'll see that they have an extensive knowledge of music theory that was learned at a young age.
@@howells442 My point still stands, whether he can pick out individual notes or break down a collective sound to specific notes. These abilities don't mean he'll make a great musician.
Whoa, alright, I could do just as good as him up until 0:47. How the hell? How can you discern to different augmented chords on top of each other? That's amazing. *Applause*
Practice since he was a baby. Here's Dylan's 4 videos that are even more difficult ua-cam.com/video/zyVXCQnW_tU/v-deo.html

Herbert Wells Ok, well if you're so great, tell me: what exactly is wrong with that sentence?
XD
OffsetSolid just reference where you have heard the cord before. Its pretty close to having perfect pitch
When Dylan hummed a B flat and sounded like he wasn't trying... It's because he was not really having to try very hard at all. His ears developed the association with the notes just like everyone else knows the alphabet, and at his young age it was easiest. I hope Dylan decides to work in the Music Industry one day, in some form or another that makes him happy!
That's the result of having both perfect pitch and proper music theory knowledge!
