My laptop is old - it is a 6th gen Skylake Xeon i7 with 4 physical cores and hyperthreading, nVidia Quattro discrete graphics chip, NVMe drive, 4K display, thunderbolt, and only 16 GB of RAM. I suspect it is time to replace this old laptop of my mine. I prefer workstation laptops over consumer grade laptops which does affect the price.

Perfect video! A lot of people think 5 minutes saved isn't a big deal. Its not, for rendering a 12 minute video that is. Try rendering a 4 hour long 4K video which I do a lot. Thats 240 minutes instead of 12. So 5 minutes saved turns into almost 2 hours saved rendering for me. It's totally worth the extra $150 to go 64gb.

I've been editing my videos on 16gb for a year and it's been so slow, I upgraded my cpu (3600>3700x) and it made almost no difference. I was using 14-15gb ram so I thought I had enough, but after upgrading to 32gb it's made a HUGE difference in the preview/editing render, it saves SO much time (and pain) being able to edit quickly without the lag. Just a basic video I'm already using 20gb, so on 16gb it must have been using my nvme and hdd to compensate. Thanks for making it clear, this video pretty much convinced me to try it.

    Hey man, great video!
I hope you'd allow me to correct something you've said at about 5:20 - that less sticks of RAM is best for performance.
It’s quite the opposite! Since most motherboards support dual channel and dual rank, it is the most optimal to use at least 2 sticks (for dual channel) and best to use 4 (double dual channel equals dual channel at dual (or even quad) rank).
Dual or quad rank is better than single rank because it allows for greater bits/second rate between ram, motherboard and processor.
So 4 single rank RAM sticks of 8gb is actually 32gb in dual channel and dual rank, while one single stick of 32gb is in single channel and possibly single rank (some 32gb sticks are dual rank).
I don't know if I was able to explain it properly, but there are plenty of videos on youtube about it.
    Cheers!

Video cards _used_ to be affordable.

Just a quick question, did you switch how many ram stick in each configuration.
For example, did you get a 4x16gb kit and start with one 16gb stick, then 2x16gb (32gb) for the 32gb test?
Because the performance probably actually comes from the dual channel nature, and more so, the quad channel.
As a result, the last statement about the computer having an easier time accessing fewer ram stick is false, dual channel doubles the memory bandwidth that the CPU can access and quad channel doubles that again, not saying that you will get twice the performance, but still, the performance that is dependent on the ram speed will be increased. xD
Further more, the ram sticks themselves need to actually process some things too, and having more sticks means that the "searching" load can be shared between more ram sticks.
I would recommend two sticks of ram, 2x16gb for instance, then you will be taking advantage of dual channel, assuming you read the motherboard manual and put the ram sticks in the right slots. The main reason I would recommend two rams stick instead of the full four is that you might want to upgrade how much ram you have and if you get a full 4 sticks you'll have to buy all new ram, because mixing brands, speeds, and sizes is not recommended.
Thanks for reading if you did!

4 sticks are quad channel. Dual channel are 2 sticks. You are talking about ranks. Its the best to have 4 ranks active and that could be achieved by 4 single-ranked sticks (most of 8GB and lower capacity sticks are single-ranked) or by two 16GB dual-ranked sticks (most of 16GB and higher capacity sticks are dual-ranked). YOu dont want to have 4x dual-ranked sticks because then you have 8 active ranks which is slower.

Many modern CPUs pack 2 memory controllers vs 1 just 2 years ago. 1 memory controller dedicated for each channel. What this means nowadays is that in fact packing 4 sticks is actually better than 2 sticks for the same amount of ram because you would be making use of the expanded architecture to access all the sticks.

More RAM will gives you (0:48) . Note: multitask mayebe it means: while you prepare the frames in premiere - you can edit some images and sounds for the video edition you're working on. it doesn't mean that's the way to work, because you have the script/screen play, checklist of photos and audios: working audio in the morning, photo images and video in afternoon, crop and paste videos in the night. working all that in the same session requires more RAM and .... %$&\*

I work as a C# and Java developer and 32 GB is enough
However I go with 64GB Ram because sometimes I run some VMs and just to have some head room
64GB is like 300€ here .. so it’s quite cheap considering I make money with this machine

There are many articles and videos now that state the opposite... that 4 sticks of RAM yields better performance (unless your overclocking - harder to overclock 4 sticks than 2). But you have to have 4 for the full RGB effect. RGB = > FPS

Watched it and upgraded ram from 16gb 2666mhz to 3200mhz 64gb. Worth it? Yes , less crashing. Used to render 4K videos and the ram almost used up to 90% of 16gb and it might not be a single run successful render. After upgrading, I was surprised it used almost up to 39% of 64gb for rendering but upside is you can do more things than just wait for rendering to be done instead.

*I would add the point that if you have two, or multiples of two, memory modules/sticks, and they are matched in capacity, speed, and latency, and also if your computer and its bios will allow it, to make sure that you are running in, "Dual Channel", memory mode, as that will increase the ram's read and write speeds from slightly to dramatically, depending on the system configuration and what applications you are running...*
