- The real Miyagi Do karate style is NOT what you think! In season 2, Cobra Kai revealed a photo of Miyagi Chojun (the founder of Goju Ryu). It also appears in Season 3 trailer.
But when I cross-compared the actual Karate movements demonstrated in both Cobra Kai and the old Karate Kid movies, there is only ONE karate style that makes sense. It came from White Crane Kung Fu in China to Okinawa - the birthplace of Karate - and made its way to Hollywood.

in s2 of cobra kai miguel wears a white belt, they're just given black belts for the tournaments
@@that_cat21 Johnny takes Miguel and Hawk's black belts away because of how violent they were. They didn't show honour so they had to start at white belts again. So no, they are not given black belts for the tournament.
I believe the photo of Miyagi Chojun was included as a nod to the origins of Karate Kid.
The screen writer stated that Mr. Miyagi was named after Chojun Miyagi, so it was not a mistake, but a nod to the actual influences of the Karate Kid character, Mr. Miyagi.

I think it makes sense that the Goju Ryu taught to Daniel by Mr. Miyagi isn't the standardized form of Goju Ryu we know. Remember that in the movie Mr. Miyagi father was around during a time were the practitioners didn't formally establish the styles and also sometimes they got together and exchanged different techniques. Some lost in time some, some carried over but passed down to individual people but not formally incorporated. Just hunch.

Mr Miyagi definitely added stuff to his own style in addition to what his father taught him.

The role of Mr. Miyagi was inspired by Meitoku Yagi. Rob Kamen, who wrote the original Karate Kid movie, studied under him at one point. Rob's brother, Roy, recieved his black belt from Seikichi Toguchi. It was all based upon goju ryu, but at the end of the day, they are writing for the screen, and it's got to be entertaining.
Thank you for the information. It all makes sense, being Seikichi Toguchi Sensei is from the Goju Ryu system. I agree it has to be entertaining also.
The funny thing is that they initially wanted Fumio Demura to play Mr. Miyagi in the original film, even having him read for the part, but he didn't feel comfortable trying to act. This led the studio to first audition Toshiro Mifune for the part, but they thought his performance made the character too serious, so then they auditioned Pat Morita, who based his performance on Demura's mannerisms, with Demura staying on as a consultant and Morita's stunt double.

that was kung-Fu not TKD. TKD is Korean.
Technically they could still tie in "Kung-Fu Dream" (the Chinese name for that movie) in with Cobra Kai /Karate Kid lore by saying what Jackie Chan was teaching Will Smith's son was Fujian White Crane Kung Fu and Jackie's character is a descendent of the teacher that taught Chojun Miyagi's teacher in Okinawa.
This makes sense because the original choreographer of Karate Kid was Fumio Demura Sensei, and he's a Shito Ryu practitioner.

That's odd because l thought they used a Tang Soo Do guy for the choreography in the first Karate Kid film. If I'm not mistaken the same guy they used played the the referee in the tournament scenes near the end.

Fumio Demura Sensei was not the choreographer of the original movies. he was Pat Morita's stunt double/stand in. The fight choreographer was Pat Johnson.

Maybe, as you said, parents find different senseis for their kids. Maybe Mr Myagi’s sensei really was Mabuni Kenwa, and Myagi Chojun is on the wall nor for being Mr Myagi’s sensei, but for being his father? Or, in the original movie Mr Myagi says that his father taught him his karate. So maybe Myagi Chojun was Mr Myagi’s official sensei, but really Mr Myagi teaches the karate that his father, Mabuni Kenwa, taught him. Or maybe they just made mistakes due to not researching things as deep as they should. 🤷🏻♂️

It's also possible that their lineage started with the Miyagi family Goju, then at the second generation more Shito ryu or even other styles like Shotokan or Kobudo were added in Mr. Miyagi's own training, with Daniel-San making more refinements and additions of his own at the third generation, perhaps with more Chojin Miyagi emphasis.
perhaps if we buy into the conspiracy and the facts laid out for us... it is entirely possible that MR. Miyagi actually took lessons from both his sensei and his father. perhaps differences were blurred for the sake of MR. Miyagi being an unofficial master teaching in the US, a foreign soil.. therefore lineage was no longer necessary, only heritage was
as far as real world examples go.. the history of brazilian jiujitsu, judo, and traditional jiujitsu somehow reminded me of such phenomenon
@@petermcnallt12pm Or its because Fumio Demura brought his Shito-Ryu teachings on the set of the movie while being the stunt double for Pat Morita, possibly trading choreography ideas with Tang Soo Do teacher Pat E Johnson, did the choreography for the movie (and played the Referee) and Robert Mark Kamen the writer for the movie, put his two cents in as well since he studied Goju-Ryu from his teacher who studied directly under Chojun Miyagi, and the whole plot of Daniel being bullied, studying under a Japanese Karate master that barely spoke English, and a Karate instructor who was also part of his life that was not a good moral teacher (which represents John Kreese) was actually a retelling of his own life experiences.
Hi Sensei! Great video! I too am a HUGE Karate Kid fan and I've done a few episodes analyzing the movies and the show, recently I did an episode looking at the Katas, as well as working on an update to include the Kanku Dai you mentioned here as well as the Naihanchi Sam Dan in The Next Karate Kid.
I DO believe they intended Miyagi Do to be Goju Ryu, too many clues hint towards it. The screenwriter, Robert Mark Kamen, is a student of Goju Ryu and based his Miyagi partially on his instructor, and named him after Chojun Miyagi. Also, in the Karate Kid Part 2...Chozen wears the Goju patch on his gi, and Chozen is a student of Sato, who learned Karate along with Miyagi from Mr. Miyagi's Father.
Traditionally a father may not teach his sons, but Mr. Miyagi directly states that his father taught him.
Now I too questioned the Kanku kata being in Goju Ryu, and hear me out here and tell me if this theory makes sense.
Chojun Miyagi is from Naha...in the Karate Kid part 2, they make a point to have have Mr. Miyagi tell Daniel to find Naha on the map, and his village is next to it. Mr. Miyagi was born in 1925 (according to the headstone in Cobra Kai) but Goju Ryu officially founded in 1930. Since a lot of Karate in Okinawa is locally taught...would you agree that it's very possible that the Miyagi Family Karate was, as you suggested in this video and then when Chojun Miyagi (perhaps a fictional relative) developed his system of Gojy Ryu that Miyagi's Father would have adapted some of the teaching and passed that down to his son, Mr. Miyagi?
This way it would make sense that Miyagi Do is primarily Goju Ryu (based on the patch) but with a mix of other Okinawan Karate.
I'm curious to know what you think.

Hello!! In Karate Kid Part 2, Mr. Miyagi did the final part of the Shisochin kata, when Daniel came to the dojo and saw Mr. Miyagi,
I support what @art of one dojo says. Also when they visit the dojo in the city, Sato's nephew wears Goju Kai's fist logo (obviously we know that Goju Kai is the Japanese line that Master Gogen Yamaguchi continued after the death of sensei Chojun Miyagi), and when the storm broke that destroys the town, Sato's nephew wears his karategi and in his jacket he had the fist of the goju kai but the ideograms are not correct, says KARA TE. I am also struck by the design of the signboard of the Dojo de Sato, the shape it has is of positive and negative like the logo of the Goju Ryu IOGKF school, but it is fiction and as our friend @artofonedojo says that Robert Mark Kamen did Goju Ryu (I read that he practiced Goju Kai, maybe that's why I include the fist). Gretings.
Chojun Miyagi did teach his sons, son and grandson have adojo in Tokyo.

Great video, Jesse! This reminds me of how I sound when I discuss martial art theory with my class mates every Friday over a round of drinks, haha! The karate nerd in me loves the detail in this explanation, but the realist in me thinks Netflix may have not even given it near as much thought. If I'm being honest, do you think they just placed it up there based on "Oh, Daniel's teacher was Mr. Miyagi and oh look, turns out there is also a real Chōjun Miyagi? Let's just place that picture up to show the family lineage." I wouldn't be surprised if that was as much thought that went into it but that's why there are people like you and the Karate Nerd community to keep them in check!

Jesse Sensei must be hired as Cobra Kai Season 3 consultant! Seriously. With him around, historical facts and karatedo accuracy will be spot on without losing cinematic flair and appeal.
WiseCrack just did a video on Hamilton, which applied the concept of Uncanny Valley to historical fiction. The closer you take your historical fiction to match reality, the more little details can break the immersion.

SaveBlueEyes the first block in the Seiyunchin kata they show is literally like a parry or deflection into a grab. It is legit how I deflect jabs including angle change in MMA into a back take. Bunkai is meant to be hidden and for the martial artist to explore the various options once they are black belt and beyond.
I remember when my dad showed me the bunkai for Seiyunchin and right off the bat, first move is “you smash his face into the ground with both hands” and I was like damnnnn karate.

Mr Miyagi said he was taught Karate by his father, but he doesn't say how much, perhaps he studied Gōjū-ryu under Chōjun Miyagi who is posibaly a relative and from his father learnt an older form on the side?

Something extra is also that there is a lot of different styles of Goju-Ryu and different sensei's and dojos teaches different variants. My son was doing Goju-Ryu where he did a different variant. They will not only learn the 13 Goju-Ryu katas, but included in their syllabus was 3 extra katas that he had to learn. He moved to a new Karate Dojo in the beginning of the year and there they do a totally different variant again. They do the 13 katas, but those katas also differ from the ones he already learned.
White crane kung fu also had a big influence on Tang Soo do. And that is what Cobra Kai teaches.

You could have mentioned Fumio Demura’s name. And BTW, Mabuni taught both his own sons, Kenei & Kenzo which later resulted in a disagreement as to who would lead Shitoryu after Kenwa Mabuni’s death.

Cobra Kai got me interested in Karate (I've already dabbled in wing chung, taekwondo and boxing as a kid/teen), then I've stumbled upon your channel and fell in love with your respectful, positive and infotaining style, and now I've found this video! full circle!! love and respect from Switzerland!
Firstly, I love Cobra Kai! I think we can learn about was learned and what was taught from Sato Sensei too, apparently said to have the same Master as Miyagi Sensei. One focused on offence and the other defence...
Also as we all do at some point, (for real karate anyway) we make a conscious decisions to work on elements of our style to enhance it for our own size, shape, flexibility and understanding.
As a result Daniel only learned one side of the art, the side in which Mr Miyagi thought best to teach... maybe in his younger years he would have been more aggressive in his approach...
Also Soto stayed in Okinawa, Miyagi left when he was a very young adult....
I have never in my life met a Black belt who was 18 and understood Karate! To me that’s a fantasy given to promote clubs ££££
Also a very good point Miyagi’s teacher his father kept only two rules in the family Dojo.
1. Karate for defence only
2. First learn rule number one.

I believe series 3 will involve a time laps, one to show the recovery of Miguel and two to give Daniel time to learn what Miyagi did not after he left. Time for Daniel to learn rule number 2!!

The two scrolls that are referred to as rule one and two, actually translates to 1.) Karate first move/punch) (空手無先手 -karate musente)
2.) First be of sound mind/heart.(先正其心) - sensei goshin or sensei sono kokoro.
So rule 1 and 2 being stated as karate for defense only, rule number 2 "see rule number 1" is just basically just a English transliteration of the two
For me, the most unrealistic part was when Lawrence was able to kick that high in the first fight after not training for 20+ years. I stopped for about 10 and lost all flexibility.
Some people are naturally flexible. My sister in law stopped doing any sports when she was about 14. In her late fourties she started taking yoga classes and her flexibility was far beyond many of the teens and twenty something ladies taking the same class, doing full splits to the front and to the sides.
They did acknowledge that in the show. After Lawrence does the high kick he gets a pain in his groin. I thought that was a very realistic reaction after all those years.

Tatsuo Shimabuki learned under multiple instructors, to include Miyagi Chojun, Motobu Choki, Kyan Chotoku, and others, when creating his own style of Isshinryu. I think it is just as likely that Mr. Miyagi learned from multiple instructors to create his own style of Miyagi-do, but Danial only put of the photo of the style’s namesake (or simple didn’t know all of the influences which came into making it). I think you make good points, and it’s an interesting video, but not necessarily the flub you portray it as. But it is a fictitious world, so in the end, what does it really matter. 😁
Excellent assumptions! However, I was trained in a goju ryu dojo, and the sensei were teaching some of the shito ryu katas as well. When I asked about it his answer was for the competition purpose. So I guess maybe learning katas from other style could be a normal thing? Anyway, thanks for the interesting history sharing.

I think the photo os chojum is there just because he was the main influence of Mr. Miyagi character and his karate philosophy on the first movies and the karate kid universe. Like how Mr. Miyagi is always talking about balance and how this is the core of his karate, and even tho balance is the essence of all karate styles, its a takes a big part of GojuRyu (hard soft).
Unfortunately, the moviments that is shown on the show is all about cinematography. I think they just think how it will look better on camera really. It's already good the fact they drink on traditional Okinawa karate to begin with ;)

I remember when the dojo and many of the Wall photos were destroyed so perhaps that is why we do not see all of the photos. Another explanation could be to show respect for the founders, and Mr. Miyagi was progressive enough to borrow techniques from other styles. Then the weapons even though it was a weapon less style, they were in a demonstration in the community and weapons are a flashy way of gaining attention. Just a thought.

I was Pat Morita's stunt double doing the crane, not Demura Sensei. He did all the Miyagi fight scenes.

I haven't watched Cobra Kai but when you mentioned the movements that aren't from Goju Ryu I got a bit confused until I remember that I practice Shito Ryu and not Goju Ryu. Btw great video keep it up!
The show is awesome. I'm glad it's bringing more attention back to traditional Martial Art's (Karate) and it's not another MMA-McDojo willing to train people with questionable intentions.

Definitely agree with where you are coming from as I also studied okinawan karate. I think if you go back to the original karate kid Mr. Miyagi learned under his father in the story of the series but of course they never really established what kind of karate they did in the movies except that it was something passed from his family and also the slight part where the founder of their karate did go to china and brought it back to Okinawa. Of course back In the day when they were making the movies they probably were not thinking much about how to connect it but still very good analysis!! I love your content !!!
Yeah, I'm pretty sure the reason Shito-ryu is used in the Karate Kid is because that was what Fumio Demura studied. Demura Sensei, who appeared in several of the movies, has been called the "real" Mr. Miyagi.

Jesse san, it's a movie! I'm sure the directos wanted to entertain not infuse history. The Karate Kid movie was one of the biggest hits back in the day. The producers catered to the American public not to Okinawan traditionalist, at least in my humble opinion
Actually, Robert Mark Kamen is the screenwriter for Karate Kid and “the film is a semi-autobiographical story based on Kamen's life. In 1964 when Kamen was 17, he was beaten up by a gang of bullies after the 1964 New York World's Fair. He thus began to study martial arts in order to defend himself. Kamen was unhappy with his first teacher who taught martial arts as a tool for violence and revenge. The general American public has no idea who Miyagi Chojun or any other old masters are. It was definitely put there for karate practitioners.

Very good analysis! What's also intriguing is that if you keep in mind Mr. Miyagi's age, and the fact that the real-life Chojun Miyagi is an actual photographic portrait in Daniel's dojo, rather than a painted portrait like all the other Miyagi ancestors, it strongly suggests that the real-life Chojun Miyagi is actually Mr. Miyagi's father (or possibly grandfather). It's a blurring of reality and fiction...and it's so cool.

Because of your videos I was inspired to reach out to my very first Martial Arts instructor from Shito Ryu Karate. I stopped training it around 10 years old. I have continued on to other arts but I always felt like it was a chapter waiting to be finished. I found him teaching in the very same spot I used to train in March of this year. I was fully motivated to start that very April and then one week later... COVID19 Cancelled everything!
Now I wait... training my patience.
Do you have any tips on what type of conditioning I should work on? Basic stances? I'm all about foundation... you can never be too good at the basics.

I’m a Nidan in Kenpo karate and I love seeing all the other karate styles and their differences on this channel. Plus not many people go deep diving into the history of this martial art, so thank you for teaching us all more than one normally would!!
I did have one question about Kenpo karate though for you. Is Kenpo a Chinese based karate style? When googling it many places have different answers. I feel like you however would be the man to come to about this!!
Lastly, as a Karate Kid series and Cobra Kai fan myself, didn’t Miyagi say in the original movie that his father taught him karate? So would that mean his father is the man you are talking about or that his father would have sent him to this master you mentioned in the video?

When I saw the photo of Mijago Chojun on Daniel's dojo wall I automatically started thinking whether Daniel's Mr. Miyagi was somehow related to the founder of Goju, or even if Goju was the "family style" that Mr. Miyagi referred to in Karate Kid II.
Cobra Kai is well made, but I especially like how it turns on its head most everything that we thought was the accepted "truth" in the movies, such as Daniel being this ultra positive character, Johnny a definite bad guy, and most importantly, the principles of Cobra Kai. For instance, the Cobra Kai principle of "striking first" is derided in the movies as aggressive and contrasted to the benign approach of Miyagi karate. However, in the series we clearly see this principle applied in a highly positive way, like when shy kids use it to talk to girls they would not normally even look at.

When you get into the lineages of Okinawan Karate, you're getting into a quite dysfunctional family. Sorry for the linguistic imagery.......but it's true. Then when you include the Karate systems taken to Japan, and the changes made because of...well....bigotry.........it becomes 10 times worse. And that is an understatement! Thank you for researching these things, and placing videos here. I'm sure you're getting a lot of criticism from some "purists". Don't let it bother you. These people are those who are emotionally connected to their style.......much like an American Football fan is connected to their team. Logistics, facts, data, none of that matters more than the emotional connection to their team. But most of these people that I've spoken to, don't know their lineage past two or three instructors......and their word is "law". So shallow....so thank you again.

It wasn't a mistake. They literally show Daniel inventing that training in the scene right before where he watches the tire spin around in slow-motion at his dealership. Do better.

The stunt double for Pat Morita (Mr Miyagi) was Fumio Demura Sensei who practices Shito'Ryu and Kobudo which explains the use of shuto uke and crane technics. On the other hand Cobra kay is based on Tang Soo Do which I recently discover is like a Korean flavor of Shotokan (just found some videos with all of their kata and are very close to shotokan version)
