Synergy .. I think thats a great way to describe the magic that makes a run. Visually I like Gene Colan, Gil Kane, and Romita Jr on DD, enjoyed Wally Wood in the recent Mighy Masterworks digest books too. Some great creators and creative teams but nothing has ever seemed as big as the Miller & Janson run of DD which is my favourite Miller superhero work, he was so good, they were a great artist inker team. Those Visionaries covers are aweful, seen better fan art in a Miller style.
Miller was one of the fortunate few American artists to learn about manga and pick them up at Japanese grocery stories years before most of us got a clue, along with Wendy Pini and a few others (Howard Chaykin, too, if memory serves from chats with a friend whose family was in social circles overlapping with a bunch of that vintage of creators). And one of my favorite bits of trivia: Gene Colan was a lifelong Christian Scientist. I always wondered what happened when someone at church asked about his work. :)
High praise! Never read it but enjoyed the Netflix series. Just ordered the omnibus volume.
You have to give some credit to Klaus Janson for the art. Miller said he contributed a lot once Miller started to take over the writing duties.
