I see some pine cones on the ground there. Pine cones have a fair amount of resin in them and they make great tinder. As to the petroleum jelly impregnated cotton balls. If you want to get them to catch a spark, you have to spread the fibres. You can also use a non impregnated cotton ball to catch the initial spark and it will burn long enough to get the petroleum jelly impregnated cotton balls to start to burn. Just a couple of ideas.
Grass has an outside coating that actually inhibits spark and flame and best used to coax an already established flame, not start one. The one exception is Cheat Grass that will take a 800 degree flint/steel spark. Cheat grass is the stuff that catches fire from catalytic converter on vehicle exhaust. That Ponderosa Pine will have excellent fatwood and resin resources that would have saved you a lot of trouble.
Im envious of that beautiful countryside, great to see the orange glow of the fire at night. Thanks for sharing Bearded Brother. Given a sub & Thumbs up !
I do think what you do is pretty cool buddy. Subbin up to ya. Looks like you had a nice adventure out there. Will follow ya on IG as well which now n days is where im at more often.
If you're expecting rain I would not have my ground cloth sticking out past my shelter as rain will collect on it and run down to your sleeping area. Especially with that amount of slope.
Great vid Happy you going to show how to set up and Knotts i guess i need to know this cause im getting out there this summer still afraid of the Bears But i'm going for sure Out in New Hampshire and Mass
Thank you sir. In my humble opinion, knots are a very important skill to learn and I do want to share the techniques that I use. As for bears (and I say this without much experience camping in bear country), they are like most apex predators. They don't want to get injured because that makes them vulnerable to other predators, so they will avoid confrontation if they can. Most bear attacks happen because the bear gets surprised by a human. From what I've read and learned from others, the best bet is to make noise when you're on their home field so they know you are around. However, I'm also a proponent of being prepared. You don't really see it in my videos, but most of the time I'm out in the bush, I carry a firearm. Good luck on your future trips.
Agree.... Myler blankets are lifesavers in any kit!! Just my 2cents here, but rocks, inclines and hills are not an issue if you hammock it. Plenty of trees for it out there also... wooHOO for pine trees!! Sorry about your axe buddy. Recommend a Fiskers X series to replace it... Fiberglass handle, tough & lightweight too. Enjoyed the video 'pard!!
We enjoyed your video so much we subbed you my friend. Speaking of Oklahoma, We have a little spot in the Kiamichis, it is our little heavenly get away. Canadian Jam knot, I will have to look it up, or wait for you to share it with us. Love it. Thanks again and keep up the fun videos.
you could have rolled a log inside the the top part of your ground sheet to avoid any run off from your tarp if it rained. any rain then would run under it rather than down tarp onto ground sheet. great vid . nice location .
Great video brother ! Your in my neck of the woods I bushcraft camp all over that Forrest the past 5 years . Yes there are very big lions and bears ! The bears are the black species but a 400 lb black bear is no joke there are areas inn the south Sacramento range still in the Forrest that has running water , streams mostly but there is a couple of water falls if you know where to find them . Maybe I'll see ya out there !
Greetings from Australia, really enjoyed your video 👍🏼 Absolutely beautiful location! I’ve subbed (figure I’m the 30th). Good camp setup (liked the choice of knots). Hope to see more of your stuff, keep it up mate!
Great video. Thanks for shareing. Just a hint Pine pitch burns real hot and always available from any pine with injuries. Small ball of that will get almost any fire going in no time.
Excellent video brother! That’s a gorgeous location, I’m jealous, we’re both used to this area here, it’s great to get to other places that you normally don’t see. And it’s always nice to have a pull or 5 off the jug when you’re out in the woods! Awesome! Really enjoyed it!
When you said "pine forest", I thought of fatwood. Fatwood is great stuff as it will burn even when wet. Learn to process fatwood, carry a piece in your kit and you will always have a way to start a fire. I am glad you didn't "see" the cougar! LOL Nicely done video.
Nice video, man...great camera work! I love The Land of Enchantment and it sounds like you might be in the mountains near Cloudcroft, one of my two favorite NM areas; the other is Taos. I used to have friends stationed at White Sands area. Man, nothing like sitting at a camp fire enjoying a smoke (a former Swisher Sweet smoker) and an adult beverage.
That's actually something I hear from a lot of pipe smokers. There are a few trick to keeping one lit. And who knows, if the interest is there, I may film a "tutorial" on how I keep mine going.
Enjoyed your video, subbed. Next time you should fluff up those Vaseline cotton balls, they will ignite fast and easy! Keep at it, you make a good video!
why no one decides to bring a freaking lighter or matches in their pouch in these video's is beyond me, man. strikers and other tricks are for "if you run out of normal lighting"
good video.interesting
Thank you
Great video AMIGO, keep them coming, 👍

Johnny Love thank you. I appreciate the tip.
Very nice adventure brother !!! Cheers 🍻
Wild Tuscany Bushcraft thank you. It was definitely a learning experience.
Awesome trip! Watch out for the cougars.
Son of a Bear Bushcraft I figure as long as I can hear them, I'll be okay.
Back to Roots Outdoor & Bushcraft , that's what they do best...you don't hear them before it's too late! 🐱

Thank you. The area was actually just south of Cloudcroft.
Cool vid bro. I hit the sub button.
Elk in NM? Did not know that.
It was a pleasant surprise.
Back to Roots Outdoor & Bushcraft , and that first rub you showed had to be an elk. Way too high for a deer, it seemed.
You need to do a "how to" on pipe smoking. I can never keep my pipe going!
That's actually something I hear from a lot of pipe smokers. There are a few trick to keeping one lit. And who knows, if the interest is there, I may film a "tutorial" on how I keep mine going.

I'm number 40
aug marten thank you. I know in the grand UA-cam scheme, 40 ain't much, but to me it's awesome. I really appreciate the support.
