How to Remove Chile Oils from Your Hands

  • Touch your eyes or nose after handling fresh chiles, and watch out! Not any more: A common pantry staple helps to remove those irritating oils much better than soap alone.

Doesn't work. Just spreads the oils to ALL OVER MY HANDS!!!!! PAIN!

  • @ngshinann

I was cutting some cili padi and dried chillis (very hot variety type).
My hands and fingers were red (chemical burns first degree, I reckon).
Went through various channels on youtube and internet search:-
Tried all of below, NONE OF THESE SUGGESTIONS worked:-
    -sodium bicarbonate paste mix
    -olive oil
    -lemon juice
    -detergent
-bathe my hands in milk, the full-cream kind
In the end, to avoid aggravating my skin further (the less you scrub or wash there will be less abrasions, the better)
Took some oral painkillers (paracetamol AND celebrex; can use others like ibuprofen or volteran), applied topical steroid creams to reduce the inflammation, and stayed in my bedroom blasting the air-conditioner at the lowest temperature and fan. Cried literally from the sting, prayed to God, I swear pain score would've been an eleven. Couldn't move my fingers. And attempted to sleep in pain.
Few hours later when i woke up, my hands were still stinging, but at least my pain score wasn't an eleven. Probably a seven, but bearable enough to type here, which I could not earlier. I still have restricted finger movement from the pain and my skin feels very fragile and sensitive no thanks to all the 'scrubs' i attempted earlier.
Hope nobody relives my experience, ever. So my suggestion would be avoid all the unnecessary folk remedies as they cause abrasions and aggravate the pain further. Just wash once, if it doesn't work, it doesn't. If it does, you're lucky you happen to have the mild chili burn. Don't retry and retry other 'remedies'. Do not rub, scrub, etc. ALSO, DO NOT HOLD COLD STUFF or FROZEN FOODS. Because you can get cold burns, without knowing it. So you are essentially injuring your skin further. You may get temporary relief but I would suggest against it.
Wait a few hours for the pain to subside, naturally. Take painkillers. I was avoiding to go to the emergency department at ALL COST, because I read some had to go to the hospital. In my case, I am a doctor. So the embarassment would've killed me more than the sting.

Detergent is about the least effective one considering that it has basic properties. Next time if it ever happens again try alcohol, it neutralizes capsaicin. The point of some of those other techniques is to remove the capsaicin, which is hard to do, but alcohol will instead neutralize the burning.
Edit: Vinegar works too if you don't have alcohol.

Is there a pain score 11?

    • @hn308
      @hn308 2 роки тому

I think the capsaicin can melt in the milk but if you keep putting your hand in the same bath it might just keep lingering around your hand. I think you have a change the milk to fresh bath after some time. Just a guess. Because i once used milk bath and the milk turn up becoming hot. Dunno if it's my hand temperature or the capsaicin. But i think it's hotter than my hand that's why i can feel it right?
Edit: ps typing with burning hands😆

This helped! I got pepper oil on some eczema patches on my hands and tried several homemade remedies that didn't help..
With this method, one wash took the pain from a 9 to a 6.. some more washes and the following helped it subsiding with time...
    Here's what I did:
-Drizzle the dish soap over the infected area, lightly work it in but don't rub too hard.. don't spread it over unaffected areas
-Let it sit for 1 minute, then rinse with hot water (not too hot as I noticed that irritated it more)
    _Repeat the above as needed...
-Give it a shot of cold water for awhile
-Apply aloe vera gel to further help it cool..

Seems like this worked for me. I tried everything (Baking soda paste, milk, fresh lemon juice, dish detergents, and it only relieved the pain temporarily. I endured this for at least 5 hours. So I used olive oil, rubbed both hands together, and then I let it sit on my hand for 10 minutes. After those 10 minutes, I applied dish detergent and rubbed my hands vigorously before washing my hands. I repeated the detergent and hand washing only for like two or three times. I only used cold water because hot or warm water made my hands burn worse. I dried my hand with a paper towel. Now I can finally go to sleep.

I didn't do anything right away because I didn't start to feel the burn for about a half-hour. At that point, olive oil didn't work at all for me. Neither did Seventh Generation dishwashing liquid (which contains coconut oil- based detergent rather than petroleum-based detergent like Dawn does), Dr Bronner's liquid castile soap, Bee and Flower Brand sandalwood soap, or rubbing alcohol which I read about elsewhere. I was not about to waste drinkable alcohol which was also suggested!
I'd also read about vinegar working and was thinking I might try that until I realized I had a lime rind sitting right there on a cutting board. I was making Thai green papaya salad and had juiced the lime to put in the dressing, in which I also used the chilis that attacked my hands! A good rubdown with the lime rind, which I cut sufficiently that it could be pretty much flattened and turned inside out, followed by washing with the dishwashing liquid I mentioned earlier, reduced the burning sensation on my hands by what I'd say was about 80-90%. That was enough that it wasn't really bothering me and after a couple of hours it was pretty much gone.
Given that I typically use whole hot chilis in making either Thai or Mexican food, recipes which also frequently call for lime juice or have lime wedges as an accompaniment, this will be my go-to solution in the future which I will do right away. I suspect it's the case that the sooner, the better. 🌶️

Undiluted white vinegar is the only thing that worked for me, as well.
I soaked the affected area for 15 minutes. Then washed with dish soap, and cool water.
      Pain went from a 10 to a 3.
I’m guessing the vinegar breaks down the barb casings within the capsaicin?
Thanks for posting the original comment. It’s appreciated!

After 12 hours I googled this remedy. I poured a small amount of olive oil on my hands and worked it in concentrating on my fingertips and used a cuticle brush. After rubbing a couple of minutes, I washed my hands and the brush with dish soap and water concentrating on the fingertips and followed that with hand soap. I then rubbed one of my eyes to test it. I’d rubbed my eyes the night before after chopping Jalapeños and it was uncomfortable for a few minutes. After doing this I still felt a little burn but it went from a 8 down to a 2 maybe. Noticeable but not bad. For me this seems to work. It doesn’t completely remove the burn but it reduced it. Will try next time right after handling the peppers to see if it works better.

if you handle a couple peppers , use a spoon to deseed not your hands , if you work with very hot peppers or many peppers , well , its worth buying and storing gloves to use while handling them . Get a 100 count box of gloves , use , toss , if handling lots of peppers that are also very hot , this is even trickier as they can seep through the gloves , most of us don't have to deal with this but if you do , understand this is going to be an issue for you if you farm peppers or for some reason handle many in day .

I'm sorry I'm too late but guys I have experienced burning my hand with hot peppers too. The only remedy I can suggest and would definitely work is soaking your burned hands to a brown sugar paste ( a little amount of water + a lot of sugar) the ratio may be 1T of water and 1/2 cup of brown sugar just soak your hands there and after 45 mins to 1 hr it will slowly fade away. I've tried everything too from dishwashing to milk, oil say it all I know it can be very very painful hut trust me guys just use that brown sugar paste you've got this!

WASH YOUR HANDS WITH HOT WATER (I know it hurts but it's important) AND SOAP before putting the oil on, it'll open up the skin pores so that the capsaicin can actually come out first. Then you rub the oil on, which will attract the capsaicin, and then wash the oil off with more soap and water WHILE SCRUBBING.
