Hi ya, callin in from UK. I’m part of a disabled sailing club called Lymington Sailability an we have 5 windows as we affectionately call them. With a hoist we have 4 wheelchair guys an assorted pick n mix of other disabilities like blind an lower back nerve damage. Great vid many thanks❤❤❤
Nice! Looks like the main sail was not all the way to the top of the mast in the full boat seen toward the end of thee video. Pull main sail all the way to the top for best performance.
Not much it won't. Since it doesn't change the size or shape of the sail. There is a high performance sail that will give better performance. Also, in low winds, leave the kids at home. Excess weight will slow you down in those conditions.
Good times. Love the vid. Considering this as compared to a Hobie TI. At 5 - 12kts looks like it does the same kind of speed. Is here an issue with flooding in large chop of swell? Those cockpit openings look like buckets1
Never experienced enough swell to be an issue (max ~3 ft) and we normally pick the weather before we go out. The water would normally drain/collect at the bottom of the hull or keel (maybe can fill 10 gal). The bilge hand-pump is at your feet and can dump water fast.
I'm not an expert, but I can share what I know... We bought ours new in 2017 and have rented a couple 2012. I can't remember any differences and the photos look the same as ours. There used to be a drain plug in some older models and different colors. I know they recently started using neoprene instead of glue on the ama, but that is about it.
Can you tell me what size trailer you fixed up for your Windrider? I need to do the same thing. I’ve found jet ski trailers but they are only about 13’ or so.
From the top of the A it was about 6ft. The tongue was probably another 6ft for a total of 12ft. We have a LOT of dimensions... Let me know if you need more: photos.app.goo.gl/gmQ5J7NeEJT4YR6h8
Life Unfurled Thanks so much. Those pics and all the measurements will be a huge help. Just got my new to me (old) Windrider back home today. Loaded it up in pieces on a flatbed and drove it back from Florida to Texas. Even got caught up in all the hurricane Delta evac traffic on the way home. Good times! 🤦♂️🤷🏼♂️
It's very straightforward, but does require more time. I had a Hobie 16 for many years, and the fact is, my WindRider 17 involves more rigging steps. For example, you have to expand the amas, install the tramps, and work with one extra shroud on each side. If you add an engine, and don't keep it on the boat when trailering, then that will add a step, as well. I'm not saying all of this is bad, just that the extra steps do add to your rigging time.
@@bartbaker1582 we used to hate the struggles with getting the mast up on a Hobie 16. a few more steps is probably okay as long as none of them are as onerous as getting that mast up was.
@@WillAllen22 The WR17 mast is 6.5 ft. shorter (20 vs. 26.5) so that will help. If it's a problem, there is a factory mast-raising kit, plus many DIY options.
@@bartbaker1582 Our marina lets us keep our mast up and amas out so that cuts down on the time to setup and launch. Here is a hyperlapse of it coming down: ua-cam.com/video/bGe2xG9WO7Q/v-deo.html
Yes, I use to be the west coast dealer and they have sailed across. I would recommend getting the add on reacher kit for a quick crossing and always have safety gear along.
These are great boats. A friend of mine developed them for people who wanted a better way to sail.

Best small boat to sail while partaking.
Wish they still made these and the rave
You can build one, check out the Trika.
i think this is the smallest boat i've seen that i'd try the great loop on.

Well done. Thank you.
Thanks for watching!

Also, here is a 3D model we made if it helps ;)

What year is yours? Do you know what years they made dramatic improvements?

Life Unfurled thanks for the reply. I believe they did change the body a bit somewhere around 2009-12 with it being flatter or something

I liked how long it was for getting in the water. Would have changed it to aluminum.

Would you say it is easy to setup? Compared to hobie 16 and other comparable boats?

I have a engine on mine and to bechs over the trampoline
Cool
The company said their form for making the hull just broke and they are uncertain if they are going to continue making them. :(
Wow, that is very sad :( I hope they can fix it!
Here is an old video of the aluminum form:

Would this be enough of a boat to sail the 22 miles from the California coast to the Catalina islands?
There are videos of people sailing there on a Hobbie 16, it would probably be similar.
