This video really helps. I nearly gone crazy when I was trying to remove the nuts with all my strength and together with a hammer knocking out of the hell and nothing works. Finally, I managed to drive my car to my mechanic and get it removed with the machine. I was confused and worry what would happen if I got stuck with a flat tyre out in the freeway? After seeing this video, I realized I have a spare wheel brace with slightly extended which do the job. Why can't car manufacturers provide wheel brace with slightly extra 4 inches of length? Anyway great video!
Peter Tan Hey thanks a lot Peter.
The reason manufacturers do not provide an extended wheelbrace is, as usual, all about money.
Hey some cars today, like the popular Mini, do not even come with a spare tyre! They give you instead 'drive flat' tyres! This means when you get a flat you can make it home. But by doing this you ruin the tyre. You have to buy a new expensive tyre to replace the ruined one. But the manufasturer is happy because he again has shaved the price of a spare wheel off his selling price! So he can initially attract more people to buy! ( A lot of people counter this by buying an old spare themselves and storing it in the trunk in case of having a flat. )
Thanks again for calling in. Tom
Extendable wrench added in my car tools. It works perfectly. Thanks you so much 👍
its also useful for self defense whenever road rage happens lol
Yes Gigine you are absolutely right and these things do happen. The problem is most people carry a wheel brace in the boot or trunk of their motor and therefore it is not so easy to get at if something nasty kicks off. Best wishes.
Thank You!! This video saved me from a very frustrating situation!! Great advice!
Thanks so much for letting me know WGG. Best wishes from Belfast Northern Ireland
Iceland here. I normally use my foot to push down on the lug wrench when loosening a nut.
The trick is to hold it snuggly in place as you apply pressure with your foot.
You can step on it while holding onto something, and shift your weight up and down.
But never hop on a lug wrench, that can lead to injury. When tightening, one must be careful
not to over tighten. Tighten as much as you can be hand, and then give it that little extra
tightening. I think the manufacturers usually make the lug wrenches at a certain length so as to reduce the chance of overtightening and/or stripping the thread. An extended lug wrench is of course a nice thing to have :)
Super great when loosening. But becare not to over tighten when tightening. Nice video, thanks.
Hey thanks for taking the time to post this very helpful comment tundrasheep. Very good advice. A lot of problems here in Belfast arise because wheel nuts have been machined on by manufacturers and even garages. When this happens they are almost impossible to shift! Aaaaaaah! Best wishes from Belfast Northern Ireland.
Thanks for your video as a woman who hasn't changed a tire since I was much younger and way stronger this helped a ton
Many thanks Tasha. I really appreciate your kind words of encouragement. Best wishes from the Castlereagh hills of Belfast.
Omg thank you. Glad I caught this before I got a flat tire and ended up stranded somewhere.
It's always better to be prepared Shon9tilR. A small wrench just will not do it if your wheel nuts are machined on. Drive safe and best wishes.
Been subscribed for a while now as your videos give me a touch of home (Newtownards) while studying in Gloucestershire, but today found myself stranded with my film crew when our mates tire exploded while driving, he couldn’t loosen the bolts so asked for a UA-cam video and someone put on this and I recognised the accent and channel immediately 😂 managed to get the job done eventually but the tires had been so worn they where smooth so no wonder they burst on us
Hi Jamie This is what my wee very amateur channel is all about,-reminding long gone folks of home.
Wow! you got off light with that tire exploding! This could have been so much worse!
Hey I know life for you is probably hectic all go, go, go and it would be easy for me to give you a lecture but tires are the only thing between you and the road at 70mph + Tires are the first thing on a motor/lorry you keep safe.
Hey safe driving and take care! Thanks for taking the time to post in.
I have an extendable breaker bar & tire repair tools in my car all the time. The roads in my area are always full of some type of debris that is constantly getting stuck in my tires and causing slow leaks. 🤬🤬🤬🤬 I’m currently taking a break from struggling with some especially tight lug nuts to see if there are any tips & tricks to getting these things loosened AND to calm down before I start throwing tools. 😂😂😂 I skipped over a lot of other videos in favor of yours because I just knew hearing your accent would make everything about this situation all better. It has, and I’m ready to get back to work on it. 💜
LOL Excellent Beckie! I love your extendable breaker bar extended post. I really do hope you got it sorted. Best wishes from the Belfast Castlereagh hills. ps Sometimes these hug nuts are machined on in a garage and it is virtually impossible to shift them without giving yourself a heart attack.
@@TomMcClean These crazy lug nuts are still stuck! I’m going to just get on with my day at home today and use the impact wrench at work tomorrow. It’s way too hot and humid here in Texas for this old girl to be messing around outside with a tire. LOL

Today i got a flat tire 20km before I reached home. I had this normal wrench only and I could not move the nuts at all!! Thankfully I was given this extendable wrench later...it worked like a charm!!
Hey Alex it really does make such a difference between frustration and failure and success and getting back on the road. Glad you got sorted.
If your wheels have been put on with a impact loosen them off again when you get home and tighten them with a bar to a more civilized torque.
8 years later you helped me. Thanks! (I had to improvise and put a hollow metal table leg over the short tool to get the same effect, it worked :)
Ah thanks for letting me know that T vs. So glad it worked out ok. Best wishes from the Belfast Castlereagh hills.
Thank you Tom but with a recent experience of trying to remove immovable nuts and then having the breakdown service failing to remove them (ended up rounding the nuts off!) I've been researching this area and have discovered that Holts TyreWeld will NOT make the tyre irreparable, as is often claimed with aerosol repairs, as it's water based.
I confirmed this with local garages. Of course, the 20% of punctures (apparently that's the figure) which damage the sidewalls of the tyre will still necessitate wheel removal.
It's worth adding that the extended wheel braces are also excellent for use in road rage incidents. Remember to keep it in your door pocket....and maybe a hammer as well........
No Axe
Hey many thanks for all that info NT. My goodness even the breakdown service couldn't get them off!
Yes a wheel brace to stop the baddies from attacking you. Unfortunately this is the way our modern civilized lifestyles are taking us! Oh dear!
Thanks for dropping by. best wishes from Belfast
Hey Tom great video! What I have found that helps is carrying a small subcompact impact wrench, in this case it's a rigid subcompact, 225' pounds of breakaway torque, more than enough to do the job. Cheers from 🇨🇦
Always sharing great tips Tom. This is useful. Well done. Take care.
Hey many thanks for your kind words of encouragement Joasha. We all thrive on encouragement and we all need it. Best wishes from the Belfast Castlereagh Hills.
"Make sure you bring a hammer!"
"Nothing... nothing happened!"
Sorry to hear this William. Machined on nuts or long standing rusted nuts are dreadful if not impossible to take off using conventional means.
a piece of metal pipe.
Dude......place the wrench on the closest nut to the ground with the arm sticking out the right direction and back the car up a bit......do it 5 times and you get them all loose effortlessly.....Jack it up and change the wheel......easy peasy
Hey AWitty Pilot thanks for that, -I wouldn't have thought of that!
Hey it's all about helping each other out.
Thanks AWitty Pilot that is a great idea to back the car up. I would never have thought of that. Thanks for dropping by.
Another possibility is place the lugwrench on the nut and then place the jack under the handle of the wrench and yes, I'm going to say it... jack-off the nuts.
They should never be machined on.. that's the problem. Nice advise 👌 thank you.
You are 100% right about that Monty Monty and that is indeed the problem. Many thanks and best wishes from Belfast Northern Ireland.
in case you dont have an extendable wheel brace you could also use any type of oil
to just oil the car nuts and wait for like 5 min and put pressure with your leg to loosen the screw
Thank you so much for this video! I was going through the exact scenario you described and I happen to have an extension and the leverage made it seem too easy. Thank you so much!!
Hi James I very much appreciate you saying this as a few other posters have called this wee video stupid and pointless etc. When they get really nasty I simply delete them. So thank you again. Best wishes from Belfast Northern Ireland.
Hello James…does it work really. I’m in the same situation now ?? So do I need to buy the long extension or go to the nearest repairs ??
@@heistman141 or use something to extend. For some reason it gives you extra leverage.
@@TomMcClean believe me Tom, I APPRECIATED the video! Thanks again. Just confirmed to a fellow viewer how well it works.
I had this problem, so I put the wheel brace on the nut and used the jack to jack the brace.

thanks so much! Very helpful.
but the way where do you buy the wrench from? a good quality wrench?

this happened to me and when i couldn't remove the lug in front of my wife i felt like a mug lol. I had to call a tow truck, i'm going to the auto store to buy one of these right now.
Good idea Nicholass. they are pretty cheap. Before you go any long journey check all your wheel nuts so that they are not going to give you a problem unscrewing them or indeed to check that they are not too loose either. Best wishes
Scotty Kilmer’s Irish cousin?! 😀
Thanks Father Jack. Wow I just checked out the number of views Scotty has! I most certainly will take this as a huge compliment. lol
Step on the lug wrench and bounce on it. If you are at least 100 lbs you should be able to generate two to three time your weight by bounce on the wrench.
Many thanks Mr MP. Unfortunately my previous wrench was to short and kept slipping off! The nuts had been machined on! Best wishes from the Belfast Castlereagh hills.
We don't have this extended wrenches in my country, the Philippines.
What I'd do is use my body weight standing on the lug wrench (same as yours, Tom) snugly lodged on the nut and push it down....easy. Nut easily lossens. Same procedure in tightening.
You wanna hold on to your vehicle for good balance while you perform this action.
Pulling up the wrench can be VERY BAD for one's back. Just use your body weight and you spend less energy. No panting results. :-)

You can use the existing tyre iron and a jack. Put the iron on the nut aiming down. Put a hydrolic jack under it and a bit of wood sometimes and jack away. The jack will force the nut to undo.
Thanks for that wee tip MrB. Best wishes from the Belfast Castlereagh hills of Northern Ireland.
Just out of interest Tom, what make was /is the wrench you are using?, the reason for my asking is because as we all know there is either superb, or, shite to found in any field of commerce, and would not to have one snap on me if I was say changing a wheel on hard shoulder.
To do if I don't have an extended board thing a shame because if you're outside and then you gotta change the tired and what to do
Maybe it would be a good idea to buy on online or in a car maintenance store, Kourkutas? This item is very helpful in releasing the wheel nuts. Best wishes from the Belfast Castlereagh hills N Ireland.
I have this and because its not angled at 90 degrees, it has broken all my security screws as it slips and eats in the screw. Ended up with 3 bolts unavle to open
Oh dear Pif. You are in trouble! I think you need the garage guys to help. Best wishes from the Belfast Castlereagh hills of Northern Ireland.
What do I do for fun on a Saturday night? I watch you show me how to change a tire. That bit with the hammer was funny. Good advice though, although I’ve never seen one of those tools before, especially not an extendable one. The tire iron is standard here. It is a cross shape. We still sell them at the hardware store.
Oh Greg you would be surprised at how many people here driving don't know if their car has a spare or if it has where it is! If they even know that they often are not carrying any tools needed and don't know how to take a wheel off. It totally amazes me. People can be so totally unprepared.
@@TomMcClean I work in a hardware store so I'm not surprised at all!!! You wouldn't believe some of the questions we get. Sometimes I interact with certain customers and think, "How did you manage to get this far in life?". Often, it happens with people who are very knowledgeable in one particular aspect of life, but not well versed in ordinary things. It's our job to help them.
Regardless, I saw you have over 100,000 views of that one video, so that's pretty amazing and also shows that people need that information.
Do you know that I was not always particularly handy? It was actually an area of weakness for me that I had an interest in because I knew it was a weakness. Also, I needed the information to save money with my house, cars, and motorcycles. And it was a nice diversion and learning excursion away from my regular office job. Sure, I grew up on a farm, but I can't say I learned too much there. My dad and brother always seemed to know everything about common things and mechanical things. When I was young, I didn't get it. Things just went over my head as they tried to explain things to me. I wouldn't know half of what i know without the internet. So thanks to all of you guys making videos, writing things in forums, etc... Again, I really enjoy your channel and the videos you've made over the years. You are quite the host!
You are spot on with your opening comments. Many today are being propelled into positions of power and authority because they have done courses degrees and have allthe paper qualifications. The thing that is missing is having a common sense approach under pressure. They have passed the exams but have ofetn zero practical real life experience. I have met really smart people who are really silly about normal everyday things.
I was surprised myself to see the numbers of views this video had attracted.
I am really surprised to hear your back story. You have certainly gained a vast practical experience and knowledge. Stuff like that cannot be bought. it is a powerful asset/ability/talent.
The internet is indeed a great teacher for those who want to learn. Wanting to learn makes the entire difference!
Hey thanks for those kind words at the end Greg. I'm just an ole bluffer who enjoys the world around him and having a bit of fun ...and......... the truth is I'm learning too and also meeting good folks like yourself.
I bought one of those from Wilkinsons; Cost me a Fiver but I have not had to use it yet!!
Hi Jeff, this is one of those items thaat you will hopefully not have to use very often. Unfortuantely when hit by an 'out of the blue ' puncture, if you do not have one you could be in trouble! Wheel nuts can be on so tightly that a smaller wheel brace is simply no good. A fiver is pretty good. Best wishes from Belfast Northern Ireland
I have a rounded lug wrench, not a pointed one. If a lug nut is stuck, I put the wrench on and use the spare tire to remover the stubborn nut. Drop the tire from about 3 feet in the air on to the end of the wrench. Works every time.
thank you for the info...
Hey and thank you for dropping in Ron. We all need to help each other along the road from time to time. Best wishes.
Using your arms to try to budge the lug nut wrench is less likely to be successful than just using your foot and body weight. If available, just slip a piece of iron pipe over the end of the wrench and use that to improve leverage. If you're too light and they are really stuck, place the jack under the end of the wrench and use that to lift it. Always tighten lug nuts with a torque wrench and ask your shop to do the same.
' slip a piece of iron pipe over the end of the wrench and use that to improve leverage.'
excellent idea wholeNwon.
The use of the jack too.
The problem as you say always arises when the garage machine them on.
Thanks for calling in with that.
Thank you so much! I was stuck after trying everything and apparently I was too light to move it with my body weight. Tried what you recommend with the jack, it worked. Appreciate the advice!
Lesson learned. I'm going through that problem as we speak.

Hey Movielunatic thanks for dropping by my wee channel. Best wishes from Belfast Northern Ireland!
I would never even think of attempting to replace car tyres myself. This is a tough job and you definitely need the right equipment. I always get it done at the garage. They do it in a matter of minutes. I have replaced motorbike tyres quite a few times and this is hard enough.
Place the wrench at 90 degrees (or the so called 9 O'Clock position) and stand on it; use your body weight to do the job!
Hi R T The short wrench I was using wouldn't allow thia. It just slipped off. The nuts had been machined on.
Actually this totally does work with any kind of decent wrench or spinner wrench but that tool is Shit anyway - get a spinner wrench.
I always carry a 3T hydraulic trolley jack + a halfords advanced 200 torque wrench, small tube of copper grease and a socket set in my boot. Never know when you'll need it
It always amazes me M29 how many folks set out on longish journey and they never think to carry the basics! They don't even know how to change a wheel with the car equipment provided! lol

Shouts to everybody who are stuck on the side of the road right now without a wheel brace, hating the fact that they just watched this entire video and are still in exactly same situation
Yeah. Used this and the 1st bolt broke right off. Tried it on next bolt and it broke off too. Drove very slowly to nearest repair shop and paid them $80 to remove the last two and replace the first tow lug bolts. Power is not always the best solution.

While this wrench is nice, all I have is a 3 foot (or longer) hollow steel pipe. It slides over the lug nut wrench and makes short work of it and best of all a pipe costs a few dollars at most.

I tried unscrewing one of the bolts on my wheel and I was putting my body weight on it and I the bolt ripped off.
Oh dear Thomas. That is a disaster. That bolt will have to be bored out. It was probably machined on and/or rusted in. Hope you get it sorted. Best wishes from Belfast.
Thats no' a hammer 😎
Thats for breaking toffee.
I know where your coming from bud.
I had to help someone with the same issue and ended up standing on it and pressing down. Not safest of methods but needs must.
A piece of heavy tubing thats a neat fit over the wrench would save money. Keep it in the boot
Hey thanks for dropping by TP. Yes the heavy bit of tubing that fits over the wrench is a good idea. Best wishes.
You can use the jack 2 ways to help get it off. Fix it at the end to create more length to the wrench. Or roll the car to where the nut you are trying to get off is closer to the ground where the jack can reach, then position the wrench on the nut as horizontal as you can get it lift the jack up underneath the end of the handle until the nut loosens
Hey Blake mamy many, thanks for taking the time to post in with that. This is excellent advice. Best wishes from the Belfast Castlereagh hills.
Use your car jack to leverage your lug wrench. Works like a champ. Takes 2 minutes. 👍
Hi SM. What a great idea. No one has ever come up with this before!!! If it works why not!!!!! Best wishes from the Belfast Castlereagh hills.
a good boot down hard on the jack lol
michael chesney The trouble is that that wee jack on the car just slipped off when I tried this.
ah right, better too tight than too lose tho ..you got there in the end
Or put a 3 foot pipe that slides over the not remover and use that for leverage just a regular 3 foot pipe I keep it in the trunk slide it over pull the nuts right off it’s actually easier because you have better leverage and you using less strength to take it off
Carry a piece of pipe in the boot and put it over the brace... Cheap and works with everything!
Excellent idea Pete! Many thanks for calling in with that. Best wishes from Belfast Northern Ireland
Practice the procedure at home and then you are prepared. After your car tires are worked on (once home again) make sure they are readjusted so manual tools will work. Before you drive off for work do what pilots do and do an inspection walk around your car - tire pressure low, tires look okay, all lights working, windows glass cracked, new dents/scratches, trunk and front hoods securely latched, and (true story) did someone steal your gas tank? Have the tools in your trunk and a good flash light with a magnetic hanger or stand - have a rain poncho too - and check that they stayed there and they work once in a while). Alone out in the boondocks on a dark night in the wind cold and rain is not where you want to say s--t.
Hey thanks for dropping by and taking the time to give this sensible good advice Don.
'Alone out in the boondocks on a dark night in the wind cold and rain is not where you want to say s--t.'
Oh, you are so right! Many thanks and best wishes from Belfast Northern Ireland.
My advice; Buy a crossbar( star bar) lug wrench.Keep it in your trunk on top of spare (under seat) Never Use those cheap burglar beaters. No matter how fancy or expensive it is. They slip off easy, often buggering the nut.
You are spot on with your advice Robert. Thanks for dropping by. Best wishes
Wheel nut tightening torque is typically around 90 ft-lb. But the effects of corrosion mean that you may need well over 120 ft-lb to break them free.
I've always managed to easily do this using the supplied wheel brace using the following technique.
1.Make sure brace is firmly all the way on to the wheel nut with lever arm horizontal.
2.Stand with one foot on the end of the wheel brace, holding on the car, and all your weight on that foot.
3. Jolt your leg, with a screech the nut will break free and turn.
I assume this is how the OEM brace is meant to be used as it is too short to loosen the nuts by hand.
Also with steel wheels you may find the wheel has corroded and stuck to the hub. Kick the tyre sidewall at different positions around the circumference to loosen it.
Hi h warren, Thanks for dropping in and many thanks for leaving your very useful comment! Cheers

The hammer was fantastic. Remember to use a regular hammer and not a mallet. The mallet didn’t work at all. FYI. Thank you
I had one of these and it fell apart rather quickly. What works best for me is to simply use services of a workshop whic tightens the nuts to the manufacturer specified torque. Removing nuts myself later is no problem then. And if I would fail I would simply call road assistance..

Og dear oh dear aarifboy! Those bolts must have been on so tight and for so long. Sounds like the bolts were frozen on! Not a good outcome! Sorry I'm lost for words. You probably need to drill them out.
These videos show bolts open counter clockwise, I wonder if did mistake by trying it counterclockwise lol. Or may be I should have used a hammer first and then probably even smaller wrench of car would have been suffiecient
Excellent aayifboy this could well be the answer and reason for the bolts breaking off. Yes a few cracks with the hammer should loosen them up. Also if you ever get the bolts out grease the threads before putting them back in again. Best wishes

Just checking for tips on this on Christmas morning with a woman pulled over in my gateway with a flat and lugs I can't remove. No extension available today so I will try using the jack under the handle. If the jack works I'll edit the comment. EDIT: the jack worked fine. Hope this helps someone.

@@TomMcClean Thanks Tom, editing my next video at the moment and already thought of adding the tip at the end as a bonus. Now I definitely will. All the best for 22.
Yes indeed Sean, do use these helpful tips. You will pull in a lot of channel attention through them, particularly if you make a separate video highlighting them. ( I have lifted nearly 300, 000 views on my wee amateur effort! lol )
I'll not 'steal' your tips for a separate video. They are yours and I wouldn't do that, as that's not what I do. I like what you are doing on your channel. Very impressive.
@@TomMcClean Jesus Tom I'd hate to see somebody stuck on the side of the road, like you I'm sure. That's why I put the comment on your video. In case it helps. Use them away, let's try and make common sense more common.
Birthday present = breaker bar + torque wrench. I have an extendable wheel brace - it's useless.
Fair point John M! i'm thinking of buying the wife one for Christmas! She'll go daft!lol
Best wishes
This is great but doesn’t help while I’m sitting on the side of the road already hahah
Yes, sorry about that Gerry. Maybe next time? Best wishes from Belfast's Castlereagh Hills.
I had one....the bugger snapped!!!
Oh no Steve! That was a real pain. You just don't expect that! Best wishes from the Belfast Castlereagh hills.
Hi Tom. Comment removed from other video as causing offense was not the intention. I thought i could simply send a message to you but see no option to do so. All the best.
Now if only David Banner had your tip he wouldn't have skinned his knuckles and ripped his shirt 🤣..rightie tightie lefty loosy
Open your car door and step on wrench.jump that's it ....put your car in gear with handbrake on .at the time of jacking car must be in gear.
Hi Nishant thanks for that helpful advice. Yes it is a very good idea to put the car is gear! Best wishes.
Tom McClean . respect sir.i love people who perform all maintenance of vehicle by own.stay technical stay young
Sorry to hear that LM. This video is not for you then. Best wishes from Belfast.
Wd40 or blowtorch does the job
@@TomMcClean yeah Tom.bit if heat is good .but that's good tool you have there.
Never, ever pull upwards to remove a lug nut or any right hand thread nut or bolt!!! You will temporarily or Permanently damage your back. Ive know many who have made this mistake and its often permanent damage. Just simply dont risk your back please. Just simply always loosen right hand nuts or bolts by pushing down only. Love you guys and be safe.
Hey thanks from Belfast, for calling in and your very sensible encouraging post.
Correct! I'd use my body weight standing on the tire wrench lodged on the nut and push it down....easy. Nut easily lossens. Same procedure in tightening.
Just use your body weight and you spend less energy.
Sound advice, down always best 👍
I did this with my foot - stomped on it, and tore my hamstring. Still recovering 3 years later!
You said it, my exact thoughts, especially for older folk.....definitely a NO NO!!!
